    History

The Merritt Trail is named for William Hamilton Merritt who directed the construction of the First Welland Canal (1829). That canal starts in Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario and follows the path of former canals past abandoned mills and locks.

This Bailey bridge in Thorold is on the Merritt Trail where it unites with the present Fourth Welland Canal, and continues across to Port Colborne on Lake Erie.
