We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Frederick Bartlett, CD (Ret’d),  peacefully at home in Chilliwack BC on 21 July 2021 at the age of 84 years.

Fred was born in Winnipeg MB, the eldest of four sons. Times were tough following the Great Depression and, much like his father, Fred was dedicated to hard work and contributed greatly to supporting the family during those difficult years.

Fred joined the Canadian Army in 1954 and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers for 14 years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. He was posted across Canada during his career as well as in Europe and including some frigid duty at Canadian Forces Station Alert NU. During his travels, the beautiful Chilliwack Valley in British Columbia caught Fred’s attention and, upon his release from the Canadian Forces, Fred signed on as a Public Service employee with the Department of National Defence at Camp Chilliwack as a Graphic Artist. Fred worked with Slesse Graphics for 29 years from 1985 to 2014. He was a very talented artist who left his creative mark throughout the Fraser Valley in the form of unique signage for his many clients.

Fred enjoyed the natural beauty of British Columbia, especially the ocean, lakes and rivers. He loved to be on the water and was a gifted fisherman. Fred was also a skilled carpenter and gardener, creating landscapes complete with large Koi ponds and unique plants and trees.

Fred was a member of the Cross Connection Church in Chilliwack who served in many roles, including as a member of the Board. Generous and kind with a great sense of humour, Fred had a passion for service. He inspired others with his humble faith, caring manner and quiet strength. He was slow to ask for help, but quick to offer it.
