    We regret to advise of the death of Major Frederick Thomas Dufour “Ted” Butler, CD (Ret’d)  , peacefully on 3 November 2025 in Victoria at the age of 88 after a brief illness. 

    Born in Ottawa ON, Ted grew up at his family's motel, "The Butler," on Montreal Road. He graduated from Royal Military College Kingston in 1960, and received his Civil Engineering degree at McGill.

    Ted served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Military Engineers with postings that included: the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC,  the appointment as Base Construction Engineering Officer in Greenwood NS, and in Halifax NS, both at the Base Construction  Engineering Section and at Maritime Command Headquarters. Ted’s final posting was to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt BC with the Construction Engineering Section.

    Following his retirement from the Canadian Forces, Ted spent six years with the BC Forest Service, followed by 15 years as a Real Estate Agent. 

    Ted volunteered as a Scout leader, a fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation & Salvation Army, and was involved in many clubs & associations, from the Military Engineers Association of Canada and the Engineering Institute of Canada, to the RMC Club and to his church, where he contributed in numerous ways.

    A service to celebrate Ted's life will be held at St John the Divine Anglican  {1611 Quadra St, Victoria} on 24 November 2025 at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: www.heartandstroke.ca. Online condolences can be sent to the Times Colonist.
