After more than 28 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Military Engineer Branch, LCol Robert Knapik, CD, (00181) has retired on 9 September 2025. Lieutenant-Colonel Rob Knapik joined the Canadian Army in November 1992 as a Reservist with 8 Field Engineer Regiment in Edmonton. While completing his university studies, he trained as an engineer during the summers.

In October 1996, he transferred to the Regular Force and, after completing his engineer training, was posted to 4 Engineer Support Regiment (4 ESR) in Gagetown. There he commanded 22

Field Troop and deployed on Operations ASSISTANCE, RECUPERATION, and MARCOT. Promoted to Captain in 1998, he commanded 25 Support Troop on Operation PALLADIUM Roto 3.

In 2000, he was posted to CFB Suffield as Works Officer. In June 2002, he joined 1 Combat

Engineer Regiment (1 CER) as Second-in-Command (2IC) of 12 Field Squadron on Operation GRIZZLY, and in 2003 he deployed as 2IC of 11 Field Squadron on Operation PALLADIUM Roto 11. In 2004, he was posted to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME) in Gagetown, where he served as Adjutant and Operations Officer.

At the end of 2006, LCol Knapik returned to CFB Suffield as Requirements Officer and was promoted to Major in 2007. Remaining at Suffield, he later assumed the position of Base Construction Engineering Officer. In 2009, he attended second-language training at the Canadian Forces Language School in Asticou, QC, before being posted to Army Headquarters in Ottawa as DLI 2 within the Directorate of Land Infrastructure.

In 2013, he was posted to 1 Engineer Support Unit (1 ESU) as Deputy Commanding Officer, overseeing the unit’s transition from Moncton, NB to Kingston, ON. Promoted to Lieutenant- Colonel in 2014, he returned to Ottawa to serve with ADM(IE) and the newly formed Real Property Operations Group as Chief of Staff (North).

In 2016, he assumed command of Real Property Operations Unit (West). Four years later, in 2020, he was posted to Australia as part of J58 International Engagements at the Australian Defence Force’s Headquarters Joint Operations Command in Canberra, where he served as Exercise Planner, Deputy Director, and Acting Director.

Returning to Canada in 2024, he was posted back to RPOps Group as J3 Operations Officer in Ottawa.

After more than 32 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces, LCol Knapik recently retired and has since accepted a position with DNMIPD as a Project Director. He is married to Amy Jesso and they have three children: Julian, Haylee, and MacKenna.

Lieutenant-colonel Rob Knapik s’est joint à l’Armée canadienne en novembre 1992 comme réserviste au sein du 8e Régiment du génie de campagne à Edmonton. Tout en poursuivant ses études universitaires, il a suivi son instruction de sapeur durant les étés.

En octobre 1996, il a transféré dans la Force régulière et, après avoir terminé son instruction de sapeur, il a été affecté au 4e Régiment de soutien du génie (4 RSG) à Gagetown. Il y a commandé la 22e troupe de campagne et a été déployé dans le cadre des opérations ASSISTANCE, RÉCUPÉRATION et MARCOT. Promu capitaine en 1998, il a commandé la 25e troupe de soutien lors de l’Opération PALLADIUM Roto 3.

En 2000, il a été affecté à la BFC Suffield à titre d’officier des travaux. En juin 2002, il a rejoint le 1er Régiment du génie de combat (1 RGC) comme commandant adjoint (2IC) du 12e

Escadron de campagne lors de l’Opération GRIZZLY, et en 2003, il a été déployé comme 2IC du 11e Escadron de campagne lors de l’Opération PALLADIUM Roto 11. En 2004, il a été affecté à l’École du génie militaire des Forces canadiennes (ÉGMFC) à Gagetown, où il a occupé les postes d’adjudant et d’officier des opérations.

À la fin de 2006, le Lcol Knapik est retourné à la BFC Suffield comme officier des besoins et a été promu major en 2007. Il y est demeuré pour occuper le poste d’officier des travaux de la base. En 2009, il a suivi un cours de langue seconde à l’École de langues des Forces canadiennes à Asticou, QC, avant d’être affecté au Quartier général de l’Armée à Ottawa, au sein de la

Direction de l’infrastructure de l’Armée de terre (DLI 2).

En 2013, il a été affecté à la 1re Unité de soutien du génie (1 USG) comme commandant adjoint, supervisant la transition de l’unité de Moncton, NB à Kingston, ON. Promu lieutenant-colonel en 2014, il est retourné à Ottawa à l’organisation du SMA(IE) et au nouveau Groupe des opérations immobilières à titre de chef d’état-major (Nord).

En 2016, il a assumé le commandement de l’Unité des opérations immobilières (Ouest). En 2020, il a été affecté en Australie au sein de J58 Engagements internationaux, au quartier général des opérations interarmées des Forces de défense australiennes à Canberra, où il a occupé les fonctions de planificateur d’exercices, de directeur adjoint et de directeur intérimaire.

De retour au Canada en 2024, il a été réaffecté au Groupe des opérations immobilières comme officier des opérations J3 à Ottawa.

Après plus de 32 ans de service loyal et dévoué au sein des Forces armées canadiennes, le Lcol Knapik a récemment pris sa retraite. Il a depuis accepté un poste de directeur de projet avec DRPIMN. Il est marié à Amy Jesso et ils ont trois enfants: Julian, Haylee et MacKenna.
