Capt Karan Singh Malhan immigrated to Canada in 2004 and applied to the CAF immediately after receiving his citizenship in 2008. He was accepted into the Royal Military College of Canada under the Regular Officer Training Program in 2009 and finished a Bachelor of Science with a double-major in Physics and Space Science.
In 2017, he finished the Basic Engineer Officer Course 1.2 and deployed to CFB Wainwright for EX MAPLE RESOLVE with 2 Combat Engineer Regiment. He was the junior officer in the Engineer Support Coordination Centre and the Heavy Equipment Troop Commander. Karan was then posted to 2 CER where he acted, not only as Heavy Equipment Troop Commander but as the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Troop and Field Troop Commander as well.
In 2019, he was posted to Canadian Joint Operations Command Headquarters (CJOC HQ), Directorate of Joint Capability Development (DJCD), where he worked on files involving near-term capability development.
Karan served on OP LENTUS in 2019, acting as the Heavy Equipment Troop Commander during the CAF’s assistance for flood relief. Also in 2019, Karan finished second in the Under 30 Category of the National Squash Championships organized by Canadian Armed Forces Sports.
In 2020, Karan served on OP LASAR, acting as the Duty Officer in the Joint Operations Centre.
After releasing, Karan will return to the University of Ottawa as he has been accepted into the Faculty of Engineering. He will reside in Ottawa with his wife, Sharna, and will welcome their first child to the family this December. Any available downtime between school and becoming a new father will be spent playing squash or catching up on sleep.
