MWO Douglas Martin Doucette, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Douglas Martin Doucette, CD (Ret’d) of Oromocto NB on 29 June 2021 at age 72. Doug served for 25 years as a Construction Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers.

Doug was born in Saint John NB and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1966. He was a Plumber Gasfitter by trade who became a Construction Maintenance Technician with advancement in rank. During his career, Doug served in every province and territory in Canada, as well as in England, Bermuda, and Germany. Doug retired from the Canadian Forces in 1991 on a Friday and started the following Monday on what was to be a 19-year career in the hotel business. During this career, he rose from being the Chief Engineer of a single hotel to become Corporate Engineer of Maintenance for 26 hotels across Canada before he retired in 2010.

In accordance with Doug's wishes, there will be no formal funeral services, but an informal gathering will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the John T McMillan Memorial Foundation (http://www.familieshelpingfamilies.ca/about-us/). Gary Henry

We regret to advise of the death of Gary Henry of Montreal, QC on 27 June 2021 at the age 58.

Gary grew up in Montreal and joined 3rd Field Engineer Regiment in the early 1980s. He served with the unit for several years before leaving the military. In civilian life, Gary worked at the Douglas Hospital, an important mental health centre in Montreal, where he assisted countless patients.

A private family event will be held but friends and family are welcome to leave online condolences at the funeral home.

Spr Richard Franklin "Frank" Krepps (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Richard Franklin ‘Frank’ Krepps (Ret'd) of Red Deer, Alberta (formerly of Flin Flon, Manitoba), peacefully on 25 June 2021 at the age of 98 years. Frank was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War.

Frank was born in Brock SK and was one of six children. He enlisted for the Second World War in 1941 at the age of 17 years by giving his wrong age.  After completing his sapper training with the Royal Canadian Engineers he became qualified as a Dispatch Rider.  Frank served as a Dispatch Rider with B Company, 2nd Battalion RCE as his unit landed at Normandy and subsequently supported the Allied advance through France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany.

After the war, Frank worked for the Hudson’s Bay Mining and Smelting Company in Flin Flon. Through the years, he resided in Flin Flon MB, Oliver BC, and Red Deer, AB. When Frank retired after thirty-five years, he and his wife Eleanor purchased a thirty-six foot motorhome and travelled throughout the United States. Golfing was a passion…as was camping, fishing and hunting.

Frank was a life-long member of the Royal Canadian Legion and was active in the Kindersley, Oliver and Red Deer branches in various positions.  Frank was also a member of the Canadian Army Veteran Motorcycle Unit (CAV) family.

Frank was awarded the rank of Knight of Frances’ National Order of the Legion of Honour for his service during the Battle of France and he attended the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of D-Day in France.

A Celebration of Frank’s Life will be held with an Honour Guard at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 35 (2810 Bremner Avenue, Red Deer) on Friday, 16 July 2021 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be held at the Brock Cemetery in  Brock SK on Sunday, 25 July 2021 at 12:00 p.m. The Honour Guard for the interment will meet at the Kindersley Legion at 11:00 am and then proceed to the Brock Cemetery for noon.

If desired, Memorial Donations in Frank’s honor may be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.com  or to Operation Smile Canada at www.operationsmile.ca .  Condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

George Sayer

We regret to advise of the death of George Sayer of Pembroke ON, suddenly at the Pembroke Regional Hospital on 16 June 2021 at the age of 81 years.  George served a career in the Canadian Forces as a Combat Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers.

Respecting George’s request, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service for George will be held at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, (296 Isabella Street, Pembroke) on Saturday 10 July 2021 at 1:00 p.m. In memory of George donations to St. Joseph’s Food Bank or CHEO would be appreciated. MWO Stephen Gittings, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Stephen Gittings, CD (Ret’d) on 15 June 2021 in St Thomas ON at age 74 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. 

Stephen was born in Paignton, Devon, England and immigrated to Thorold Ontario in his early childhood. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1963 at age 16 as a Sapper Apprentice with the 12th Intake. He graduated from the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in 1965 as both a Field Engineer and Carpenter Group 1.  Steven continued in his Engineer Career as a Construction Maintenance Technician with postings that included a United Nations tour in Egypt, Petawawa ON, Jericho Beach Vancouver BC and London ON. After a 33-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers, Stephen retired as Master Warrant Officer in 1996 to live in St Thomas.

In keeping with Stephen's wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or service. If desired, donations to a charity of one's choice in Stephen’s name would be appreciated.  Personal condolences to the family can be made at  funeral home.

MCpl Leon Bryson, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Corporal Leon Bryson, CD (Ret’d) of Perth-Andover NB, peacefully at Victoria Glen Manor on 7 June 2021 at age 81 years. 

Leon was born in Perth-Andover, NB into a large family of thirteen brothers and sisters. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps in Toronto in 1958. He served with RCASC for more than 20 years in various locations in Canada, as well as in Northern Germany before remustering in 1980 to become a Field Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers. Leon served this part of his career with 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa ON, mainly as a heavy equipment operator before he retired in the late-80s. Leon was also a paratrooper. 

Leon was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 36, and was also a member of the Perth-Andover Elks Club.

Due to the current travel restrictions, a celebration of Leon's life will be held at a later date.  For those who wish, memorial donations to the Royal Canadian Legion or to the Victoria Glen Manor would be appreciated by the family.

Sgt Joseph Eugene Bernard “Bernie” Lauzon, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Joseph Eugene Bernard “Bernie” Lauzon, CD (Ret’d) on 6 June 2021 at St Patrick's Home in Ottawa, at age 74.

Bernie was born in Cornwall ON and enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 1964. He trained as a Field Engineer at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC and served with 3 Field Squadron until 1966 when he transferred to the Army Survey Establishment.

Bernie served in Mapping and Charting Establishment as a field surveyor, and stereocomparator and stereoplotter operator until 1977 when he retired from the Canadian Forces at the rank of Sergeant. He then pursued a career as a computer program analyst in MCE with the Public Service.

WO Earl Russell Allen, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Earl Russell Allen, CD (Ret’d) of Lucasville NS, suddenly on 3 June 2021 at the Hants County Hospital in Windsor NS at age 80.

Earl served as a firefighter in the Canadian Military Engineers for 26 years at Canadian Forces bases in Greenwood NS, Germany, Val ‘Dor QC, Shearwater NS, and Goose Bay NL. Earl's service also included a seven month deployment in the Middle East.

Cremation has taken place with a private family burial in Oakridge Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Cpl Danny Young (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Danny Young (Ret'd) of Skidegate, Haida Gwaii, BC on 2 Jun 2021.

Born in The Pas MB, Danny served as a Combat Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers for 10 years in Germany, Calgary and Chilliwack before he took his release and worked for the British Columbia ferry system in the Queen Charlottes. He was a strong supporter of the Retired Sapper Reunions.

CWO Richard “Dick” Roth, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Richard “Dick” Roth, CD (Ret’d), peacefully at home in Surrey BC on 29 May 2021 at age 95. Dick was a veteran of the Second World War. He joined as a Boy Soldier in 1943 and trained at several schools across Canada. After the war, he joined the Permanent Force and the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Firefighter with No 15 Engineer Services and Works Company in Camp Borden ON. Dick went on to serve 30 years with the Canadian Military Engineers in the mechanical trades.

Dick served across Canada in locations such as: at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Camp Chilliwack BC as an Instructor (1950-56), 18 Works Company at Fort Churchill MB (1958-60), back to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering as an instructor (1960-71) [ during which time he deployed to Canadian Forces Station Alert NU in 1967], and then with  Air Transport Command Headquarters in Trenton ON (1971-74) as  Mechanical Inspector. Dick retired from the Canadian Forces in 1975 and then pursued a 21-year career as a Mechanical Inspector for a consulting engineering company.

CWO Pius Young, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Pius Young, CD (Ret’d) in Edmonton AB on 18 May 2021 after a brief illness.

Pius was born in Stephenville Crossing NL. He originally enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy and served on HMCS Bonniventure, before joining the Army. He served a full career with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Field Engineer in both the Regular Force and the Reserve Force.  His postings included 1 Airborne Field Squadron in Edmonton AB (including a deployment with UNFICYP in 1974), the Canadian Forces Parachute Maintenance Depot, 22 Field Squadron in Gagetown NB, and with the Regular Support Staff. He made a transfer to the Reserve Force with 8th Field Engineer Regiment, where he was Regimental Sergeant Major from 1992 to 1996. Pius retired from the Canadian Forces in 1996.

Funeral arrangements were private.

WO Richard "Rick" Burness, CD (Ret’d )

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Richard "Rick" Burness, CD (Ret’d ) of Carrying Place ON, peacefully at the Trenton Memorial Hospital on 18 May 2021 at the age of 75 years.

Rick was Canadian Forces Firefighter who served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Military Engineers for 36 years from 1965 to 2001. He was a 4th Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus - Trenton Council.

The family will receive friends at the Rushnell Funeral Centre [60 Division St, Trenton (613-392-2111)] on Sunday, 23 May 2021 from 2-4:00p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. Due to pandemic conditions, you must pre-register with the funeral home. Masks and social distancing must be practised.

A private funeral mass will be celebrated from Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Chapel, Trenton on Tuesday, 25 May 2021 at 1:00 p.m. The service will be live-streamed. Interment will follow at Carrying Place Annex Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. WO I John Albert McArthur, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer First Class John Albert McArthur, CD (Ret’d), a  resident of Hunt Club Manor in Ottawa, peacefully on 14 May 2021 at the Civic Hospital at the age of 95 years.

Born in Seven Bridge ON, John enlisted for the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1943 and served with 9th Field Squadron in Northwest Europe in Holland and Germany. He was selected for the Pacific Draft in August 1945 but did not deploy due the end of the war with Japan.

John was demobilized in October 1945.  He had taken a photogrammetry course near the end of the war and he joined the post-war Permanent Force as a Topographical Surveyor in May 1947. His 20-years service with the Army Survey Establishment included his appointment as Regimental Sergeant Major (1959 - 61). John’s extensive surveying work in Canada’s North included Parsnip River, Yellowknife, Great Bear Lake,  Fort Reliance, Upper Back River, Wood Buffalo, Arctic islands, Kapuskasing, and Hay River. He also deployed on a United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) mission in 1962 to survey the Israel/Syria border as part of the dispute resolution process.

After retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1967 as a Warrant Officer First Class, John joined the Surveys and Mapping Branch of Energy Mines and Resources (now Natural Resources Canada) and became Chief Administration Officer. John retired from the Public Service in 1989 as the Director of Reproduction and Distribution.

A private family Interment was held on 19 May 2021. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Sgt Félix Parent, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Félix Parent, CD (Ret’d) of Gatineau, QC on May 10, 2021 at the age of 83 years.

Felix joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1957 and served as an Aeronautical Engineering Technician for 15 years before transferring to the Canadian Military Engineers in 1972 when he was stationed at Canadian Forces Base Uplands ON. He then served for 23 years.as a Topographic Surveyor with Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa . Felix retired from the Canadian Forces in 1980 and subsequently served for 20 years in MCE with the Public Service as a Draftsman before retiring in 2000.

Due to COVID restrictions, a private family funeral will be conducted on 25 May 2021 at 10:00 am. Others can attend virtually at a live webcast or replay of the ceremony at:  https://commemora.tv/en/diffusions/29723.

Sgt Jeff Bourns, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Jeff Bourns, CD (Ret’d) on 1 May 2021 in Shawnigan Lake, BC at age 65. Jeff served 20 years as a member of the Canadian Military Engineers - first as a Field Engineer and then as a Construction Engineering Procedures Technician.

Jeff was born in Manitoba and moved to Vancouver BC at an early age. He enrolled in the Primary Reserve with 6th Field Engineer Squadron in North Vancouver and transferred to the Regular Force in 1975. Upon completion of his Field Engineer training at Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, Jeff was posted to 3 Field Squadron (re-named 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in 1977) in Chilliwack. This was followed by a posting to 4 Combat Engineer Regiment in Lahr, Germany. While in Germany, Jeff qualified as a Combat Diver.

Jeff returned to Canada in 1984 and remustered to the Construction Engineering Procedures Technician trade. He was subsequently posted to Germany at Canadian Forces Base Lahr where he completed a tour with the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR). Later, he was a member of the CFB Lahr close-out team. Upon return to Canada, Jeff was posted to CFB Esquimalt and he retired there in 1995.

Jeff settled in the Shawnigan Lake area after retirement from the Canadian Forces. He completed the Quality Management Program at the University of Manitoba and then went to work as the Quality Manager, Environmental Health and Safety Officer at Point Hope Maritime shipyard in Victoria BC.

Gordon “Gord” German Killingbeck

We regret to advise of the death of Gordon “Gord” German Killingbeck, peacefully on 1 May 2021 at Lakeridge Health  in Oshawa ON at the age of 93 years.  

Gord was both a heavy equipment operator and a tractor-trailer driver. He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for 65 years.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 300 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Corporal Carman “Jack” Stock, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Carman “Jack” Stock, CD (Ret’d) at the Brandon Regional Health Centre in Manitoba on 24 April 2021 at age 82 after a long period of illness.

Jack was born in Gibson ON. He was a Six Nations (Wahta) Mohawk and attended the Mohawk Institute Residential School in Brantford ON up to Grade 8. Jack enlisted in the Canadian Forces and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1961.

Jack’s military career allowed him to serve from coast to coast within Canada and took him overseas to Germany. He served a full career as a Combat Engineer with our field squadrons in Chilliwack BC, Petawawa ON, Camp Gagetown NB and in Germany. Jack also served on two United Nations Peacekeeping missions.

Jack’s final posting was to CFB Shilo in 1978 with the German Army Training Establishment. He settled in there for more than 40 years and they bought their first home in the community of Sprucewoods when he retired from the Canadian Forces in 1985.  Jack was a member of the Shilo Men’s Club and Royal Canadian Legion for 47 years and was an excellent curler and dart player.

Jack could build or fix almost anything and would spend his time helping his neighbours and kids build or fix something well into his 80s. He enjoyed times with friends and their yard was often the place that a bonfire would be burning and neighbours would stop in for a drink and to share stories. Jack enjoyed the connection with many people he had served with and some of his best times in later years were meeting up with old army buddies and sharing stories from those times.

Jack’s family will cherish Jack’s memory privately. In lieu of flowers, please give to a charity of your choice. Condolences can be sent to the funeral home

Sgt George Anderson (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant George Anderson (Ret’d), a resident of the Capital Care Grandview Centre in Edmonton AB, on 20 April 2021 at age 91.

George joined the Royal Canadian Engineers with the Reserves in 1955 and served with 25th Fd Sqn in Edmonton where he specialized in Explosive Bridge Demolitions. He retired from uniformed service in 1964 as a Sergeant but remained an active member of the Prince of Wales Armoury for the next two years.

George worked as a mechanic at the Healy Ford Motor Company in Edmonton for 38 years and led a very active life. He taught Judo at the Jasper Place Judokwai for 12 years. George took up flying in 1997 and was quite proud when he received his pilot’s licence.

George was proud of his Icelandic heritage, extensively researching his family roots and travelling to Iceland in 1994. He was an accomplished traveler, hiker and fisherman. George was also an amateur musician who learned to play the guitar and banjo by ear and took up the piano as well. He was an active participant with the West End Seniors walking group.

Cremation has taken place and a private family Celebration of Life will be held due to Covid restrictions. Donald “Don” Douglas Holloway

We regret to advise of the death of Donald “Don” Douglas Holloway, peacefully on 13 April 2021 at his home in Red Deer AB at the age of 88 years. Don was a Korean War veteran and served with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Combat Engineer for 31 years,

Don was born in Port Blandford NL and enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1951. After completing his basic and unit training in Petawawa ON and Chilliwack BC before deploying to Korea in 1953 as part of the 59th Independent Field Squadron

After returning from Korea, Don was initially posted at Griesbach Barracks in Edmonton AB. He was later stationed in Ottawa ON, Newfoundland, Kingston ON, Kamloops BC and, finally, to Red Deer at Canadian Forces Base Penhold. By 1977, Don and his family had settled in Penhold. As he was nearing retirement. Don built a house and made his final move to Red Deer in 1981.

Don retired from the Canadian Forces in 1982.  He always proudly represented the Korea veterans at Remembrance Services.  One of Don’s proudest moments was visiting Korea in 2013 with his son Doug as part of the official Commonwealth Forces celebration of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice.  Don was recently honoured as Red Deer’s 2020 Honorary Senior Citizen of the Year for his contributions to his community, province and country.

WO Gilbert Arthur Bates, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Gilbert Arthur Bates, CD (Ret’d) on 13 April 2021, in his home in Middleton NS at age 92.

Born in Freeport NS, Gilbert joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1947 as a Firefighter. He served as Fire Chief at a number of air force stations throughout his military career.

After retiring from the Canadian Forces, Gilbert returned to Freeport where he worked in the fishing industry and also operated a small grocery store. He served several terms as village commissioner and was instrumental in having the first fire hall built. Gilbert later worked at Michelin Tire in Bridgewater in security and teaching firefighting and first aid. After his work at Michelin, he bought the Long and Brier Islands Ambulance Service and operated it until late 1989. At that time, he purchased a motor home and he and his wife Joan spent some 16 winters in the southern U.S.A. and Mexico.

There will be no funeral service at Gilbert’s request. After cremation, interment will be at Brookside Cemetery in Freeport. Donations in Gilbert's memory can be made to the Freeport Baptist Church or Brookside Cemetery Maintenance Fund. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Sgt Joseph L. Forest, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Joseph L. Forest, CD (Ret’d) at the Veterans' Health Centre in Moncton NB on 12 April 2021 at age 98 after a short illness.

Joseph was born in Cap-Pelé NB. He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. He participated in Operation OVERLORD, the invasion of Europe, in June 1944 and supported the Allied advance through France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and into Germany. After the war, he transferred to the Permanent Force and served 25 years with the Royal Canadian Engineers before retiring at the rank of Sergeant. For his second career, Joseph was employed with different Federal Government departments across Canada including Nunavut and Northwest Territories. He retired to Cap-Pelé.

Public visitation will be held at the 16 Sainte-Thérèse d'Avila funeral salon in Cap-Pelé, on Friday, 16 April from 7:00 to 9;00 pm. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #91, will have a Prayer Service at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated from Sainte-Thérèse d'Avila Roman Catholic Church in Cap-Pelé on Saturday, 17 April 2021 at 10:30 am for a maximum of 200 people. The Mass will be broadcast online at: www.facebook.com/PassageFH .

Sgt James "Jimbo" Ira Bryant, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of firefighter Sergeant James "Jimbo" Ira Bryant, CD (Ret'd) of Summerside PE at the Prince County Hospital in Summerside on 11 April 2021 at the age of 81 years.

Born in North Enmore PE, James served with the Royal Canadian Navy onboard  HMCS Bonaventure, other RCN ships, and at Canadian Forces Base Summerside.

James is resting at the Moase Funeral Home in Summerside where a private family service will be held. Interment will take place later in Peoples Cemetery in Summerside. Memorial donations to the Children’s Wish Foundation would be appreciated. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

CWO Lorne Boulter, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Lorne Boulter, CD (Ret’d) in Fredericton NB on 9 April 2021 at age 67.

Lorne was born in Pictou NS and served a full military career of 26 years with the Communication and Electronics Branch as Signaller (Radio Operator) before he retired from the Canadian Forces at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. For his second career, Lorne joined the Public Service in April 1999 as the Information Systems Officer at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering. He was responsible for the operation and maintenance of CFSME’s computers and peripherals and contributed greatly to the school’s increased capability of its computer support systems during a very formative period.

Lorne also represented CFSME on the Canadian Forces Vulnerability Assessment Team in inspections of Canadian Forces Station Alert NU and CFS St John's NL, Canadian forces Base Moose Jaw SK and CFB Borden ON, as well as the National Defence Headquarters Carling Campus in Ottawa, in preparation for the move of NDHQ. Other highlights during Lorne's career at CFSME include his participation in the planning and execution of the Military Engineers 100th birthday in 2003 where he led in the design, construction and operation of "Sapper's Loft," the main venue for the event.

For his service with CFSME, Lorne was awarded the Commandant’s Commendation, the CHIMO award and was honoured by being recognized as a Pukka Sapper. Lorne retired in 2019 and resided in Oromocto.

Lorne was an organizer and advocate for curling. He was responsible for resurrecting the Atlantic Beaverspiel, an activity that continues to this day and is the envy of other events at the Gage Golf and Curling Club. He was awarded the Combat Training Centre Commander’s Commendation in recognition of his lifelong dedication and conspicuous service to the Gage Golf and Curling Club.

George William Collins

We regret to advise of the death of George William Collins of Ottawa ON at the Ottawa Hospital on 8 April 2021 at the age of 87.

George grew up and went to primary school in New Edinburgh (Ottawa) followed by attendance at Ottawa Tech High School. He attended Carleton College (University) with the Regular Officer Training Plan and graduated in 1957 with Honours in Chemistry. In university, George was active in hockey and football.

George spent his summers on officer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC. After a short career with the Royal Canadian Engineers, George worked for Shell Oil in Toronto before a career shift and his attending Teacher’s College. He first taught chemistry in Chesterville ON and at Ottawa Tech and then became Vice Principal at Ottawa Tech, Rideau, Hillcrest and Highland Park high schools. During this time, George earned his Master’s degree in Education at the University of Ottawa and then earned an Advanced Diploma at the University of London, UK. George retired from teaching in 1991.

George loved sports including hockey, football, cricket, cross country skiing in the Gatineau and he was a long- term member of the Recreational Association. George was inducted into the National Capital Old Timers Hall of Fame for establishing and running the Ottawa Tech Teachers Hockey team from 1973 to 2007. George believed in reaching goals through dedication, hard work, discipline, and service. He was a mentor, coach and partner to many, particularly to his children and students.  

A funeral service will be held on 19 April 2021 at 1:00pm at Hulse, Playfair and McGarry (Central Chapel) by invitation due to COVID restrictions. For those wishing, the service will be live-streamed on 19 April at 1:00pm (EST). The live stream can be accessed through the funeral home website.

L/Cpl Weldon Marshall "Bill" Bouleau

We regret to advise the passing of Lance-Corporal Weldon Marshall "Bill" Bouleau (Ret'd) on 30 March 2021 in Port Alberni B.C. at the age of 90 years. 

Bill was born in Arnprior ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers and was stationed initially at Camp Chilliwack BC prior to being deployed to Korea. On his return to Canada, he married Kay Zinger, trained as an electrician and eventually settled in Port Alberni where he worked at the Alberni Plywoods. 

Bill was an active member of various groups including the Knights of Columbus, the Legion and the Sunshine Club. He and Kay were both square dancers and ballroom dancers for many years, an activity they enjoyed until shortly before her death in 2011. 

Gardening and fishing were two of his favourite past times. He also played hockey in a mill league, curled and played badminton in town groups. He enjoyed playing crib and pool at the Alana Club and the Legion.

Spr Jordan Giles

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Spr Jordan Giles of Almonte, ON at age 24 on 21 March 2021. Gilles was serving with 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa ON.

Born in Ottawa, Jordan grew up in Almonte and Carp and enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 2019. He was posted to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa ON in January 2020 after completing his Basic Combat Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown NB. He became a section member in 23 Fd Sqn and rapidly integrated into the 2 CER Family. When the COVID19 pandemic began, Jordan transitioned his efforts from preparations for Ex MAPLE RESOLVE to the new virtual environment where he worked with his section to conduct professional development in creative new ways. The Fall and Winter of 2020/21 provided some small opportunities for section-level training where Jordan became known to his section and Section Commander as a good Sapper and a good Friend. He was most recently employed in the Squadron Quartermasters’ section.

MWO Daniel Charles Aurel Hubley, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Daniel Charles Aurel Hubley, CD (Ret’d) of Russell ON at age 60 on 21 March 2021. Dan served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 16 years before joining the Primary Reserve and serving 16 years with the Infantry.

Dan was born in Pembroke ON into a family where his father was a Sapper. He grew up there until his family moved to CFB Rockliffe in 1976. Dan soon joined the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa where he rose to the rank of Master Corporal  before transferring to the Regular Force in 1986.

After a short two month posting to Canadian Forces Station Lowther ON while awaiting his trades training, Dan arrived at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering where he successfully completed his QL3 Refrigeration and Mechanical Technician training. Dan was then posted to CFS Holberg BC for a two-year posting during which time he completed his QL5 qualification.  He next served ON a five-year posting at CFB Toronto that was followed by a posting to CFB Goose Bay. While at Goose Bay, he deployed to UNDOF Syria (Aug - Feb 96). After returning from this deployment, Dan was next posted to the Area Construction Troop in 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa ON in 1996. During this 2 CER tour he deployed to Turkey on Task Force TORRENT ( Aug - Sep 99) . Dan took his release from the Canadian Forces in 2000 at the rank of Corporal.

Dan re-joined the Primary Reserve Force in 2002 as a Master Corporal in the Infantry with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa - his first unit with the Canadian Forces in the 1970s. Dan transferred to Stormont Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders in 2014 where he was promoted to Master Warrant Officer and served with them as Platoon 2IC and Company Sergeant Major. His service with the Reserves covered 16 years in a variety of Class A and Class B assignments in Ottawa, Gagetown NB, St-Jean QC, Kingston ON and Cornwall ON.  Dan took his release from the Primary Reserve in 2018

Sgt George Edward Kirton, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant George Edward Kirton, CD (Ret’d) at the Misericordia Hospital in Edmonton AB on 18 March 2021 at age 56. George served a 21-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers.

George was born in Sydney NS and was a graduate of Sydney Academy. He worked several part-time jobs in and around Sydney before joining the Militia in 1982 where he worked as a military police officer with 35 Military Police Platoon in Sydney. That experience ultimately led him to join the Regular Force in 1984. He completed basic training in Cornwallis NS and then proceeded to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering at Chilliwack BC to begin the training for his career with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Heavy Equipment Operator and an Airborne Engineer.

George served most of his career with 2 Canadian Engineer Regiment in Petawawa ON and had several deployments including Canadian Forces Station Alert, Kuwait and Bosnia–Herzegovina. He received a Chief of Defense Staff Commendation for his contributions during his tour in Bosnia for the immediate action that he took with his Heavy Equipment to rescue 12 civilian residents from a fire in a nine-storey apartment building in Kljuc. 

George achieved the rank of Sergeant before his medical release in 2003. Upon release, he studied Business at the University of New Brunswick and received certification in Landscape Design from the Community College in Woodstock NB. Following certification, he established and operated his own landscaping company, Final Touch Landscaping & Design. George later went on to achieve his journeyman certification in the occupation of mobile crane operator-hydraulics and secured employment with Voice Construction Limited and North American Construction Group. Later, he began his civilian career with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955, where he worked as an instructor in the areas of Heavy Equipment and Crane Operations. George achieved his Master Instructor, Level 1 certification from Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.

George was extremely passionate about the game of golf and put his experience in landscape and design to work in the development of the lakes at Ben Eoin Resort in Nova Scotia. George had a comedic personality and loved to make people laugh, so it was only fitting that in retirement he would enrol in comedy workshops and even debut in a comedy club open mike. George had an infectious smile that touched so many and he will be remembered as a positive, loving and selfless person. George was a member of the St. Philip’s African Orthodox Church, in Sydney where he was ordained in 2009.

Visitation and a memorial service to celebrate the life of George Kirton will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier, on Saturday, 10 April  2021. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 1 to 3:00 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 3:00 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel. Interment will take place in All Faith Gardens, Whitney Pier. Covid protocols will be practised at the service.

Cpl Clinton “Clint” Keith McCue (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Clinton “Clint” Keith McCue (Ret’d) on 16 March 2021, peacefully in his sleep at his home in Whitehorse YT at age 61.

A native of Whitehorse, Clint  attended F.H. Collins High School and followed his grandfather’s path into the military when he joined the Canadian Military Engineers. Clint served in 2 Combat Engineer Regiment, Petawawa ON in the early 80s as an Airborne Sapper. He retired from the Canadian Forces as a Corporal when the Call of the North brought him back to the Yukon.

Clint was very proud of his service to Canada and never slowed down after leaving the military. He entered the Yukon Trades College when he moved back to the Yukon and he became a qualified heavy-duty mechanic. After working for some larger companies, Clint decided that he needed to be his own boss and started Rouge Contracting. He took on contracts across northern Canada servicing and building numerous remote telecommunication sites.

Cpl Greg Geldart, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Greg Geldart, CD (Ret’d) of the Comox Valley on 16 March 2021 at age 64. Greg served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 30 years as a Firefighter with the Canadian Air Force where he served in Halifax NS, Germany, twice in Trenton ON and at 19 Wing in Comox BC before retiring in 2004.

Fire trucks from local fire departments and 19 Wing Comox accompanied Greg from Courtenay to Elk Falls Cemetery as Greg’s casket was carried in a hearse along streets lined with firefighters.

Spr Kevin J. Learning (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Kevin J. Learning (Ret’d) of Edmonton AB on 12 March 2021. Kevin was Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Korean War.

As an unemployed youth, Kevin enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1951 in St Johns NL at the time when the Canadian Army was expanding during the Cold War and new Royal Canadian Engineer field squadrons were being formed. After a short stay in Halifax NS, he was sent to Camp Petawawa ON for his initial three months of basic training followed by unit training with the 59th Independent Field Squadron. It was during this training that the unit learned his unit was next for deployment to Korea. After more unit training in Camp Wainwright AB, the unit returned to Camp Petawawa from where it departed by train to Seattle in March 1953 and, from there, by ship to Japan and then on to Korea. Kevin served with 59th Independent Field Squadron (later re-designated as 4 Field Squadron ) in Korea from March 1953  to March 1954. Much of his activities involved laying mines and clearing Chinese landmines in support of the Princess Louise Canadian Light Infantry. Kevin retired from the Canadian Forces in 1955. He was an adventurer and traveller, Reverend, truck driver, boxer and entrepreneur.

Sgt Michael Jude Gardiner, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Michael Jude Gardiner, CD (Ret’d) on 11 March 2021 in Angus ON at age 65.

Michael grew up in Reserve Mines, Cape Breton Island, NS and left home to join the Canadian Forces at the age of 17.  He served a full career of more than 30 years with the Canadian Military Engineers that included postings to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Chilliwack BC, 22 Field Squadron in Camp Gagetown NB, and Canadian Forces Base Borden with Roads and Grounds. Mike was the model for “Sapper,” Colonel Gauthier’s 1981 iconic statue of a sapper with a mine detector.

Michael retired from the Canadian Forces in 2000 and then worked as a grounds keeper at the Borden Golf Club for a number of years before returning to Cape Breton in 2017 to reside in Big Bras d'Or. After he was diagnosed with cancer in November 2020, Mike resided with his sister for a while before returning to Angus in February 2021 to be with his two sons and their families.

Michael wished to be cremated and his cremains shared between Ontario and Cape Breton. In Memorium donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of choice would be appreciated by the family.

Cpl Luigi DiClemente (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Luigi DiClemente (Ret'd) on Saturday, 6 March 2021 at age 79 at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto ON where he was living in the Dorothy Macham Home.

Luigi was born in Roccamorice, Pescara Abruzzo Italy and came to Canada as a youth with his three siblings. His Italian family called him ‘Gino.’ The family initially lived in Niagara Falls, ON but then moved to Toronto. Luigi attended McMurrich Junior and, as a teenager, delivered prescriptions for the local pharmacy and worked as a copy boy for The Toronto Star. Luigi's father sponsored and housed many of his and his wife's brothers and sisters and their children when they immigrated to Canada. One of Luigi’s responsibilities was to help his Italian cousins assimilate into the Canadian culture, help them with their English and to navigate the big city as they looked for jobs.

Luigi tried to join the Royal Canadian Engineers at age 18 but the recruiting officer sent him home, telling him: "It seems your parents need you more than we do." He was successful in enlisting in 1961. After completing his basic Field Engineer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering at Chilliwack BC in 1963, he was posted to 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack.

On completion of his tour in Chilliwack, Luigi was posted to 4 Field Squadron in Werl Germany (1964-1967). He was posted next to 1 Field Squadron in Petawawa ON and he returned to Werl for his second tour with 4 Field Squadron (1969-1972) after this Petawawa tour.

Luigi retired from the Canadian Forces after his second 4 Field Squadron tour and returned to Canada. He worked in the Construction industry in Toronto for a few years and completed his apprenticeship training as an Electrician. He was a Journeyman Electrician when he moved to Belleville ON. In Belleville, Luigi initially worked for others before he started his own business, DC Electric, Ltd. He also attended Loyalist Collegiate and Vocational Institute and acquired his Fundamentals of Refrigeration, Phase II qualification. In 1993, Luigi moved to Abbotsford BC. He attended British Columbia Institute of Technology to upgrade his ticket to provincial status and ran a very successful business.

Cpl John Stephen Steeves (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal John Stephen Steeves (Ret’d) of Westville, Pictou County, NS on 4 March in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow at age 59.

John was born and raised in Crossroads Ohio Antigonish, one of fourteen children. He wanted to join the Army like his dad, a veteran of the Second World War, and he joined the Canadian Military Engineers at 18. John’s postings included Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack BC, CFB Gagetown NB, and Lahr, Germany as well as a deployment to Canadian Forces Station to Alert NU. A serious training accident in Germany resulted in his being medically released at age 31 years.

Visitation will be held Monday from 2- 4:00 and 7-9:00 pm in C.L. Curry Funeral Home, 135 College Street, Antigonish. Social distancing protocols must be followed, and masks are mandatory. A private funeral will be held in St. Joseph’s Church, St. Joseph, with a link to the service available Tuesday afternoon on the funeral home website. Spr Charles Veilleux (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Charles Veilleux (Ret’d) of St Georges QC at the Centre d'hébergement Champlain-de-l'Assomption on 2 March 2021, at the age of 100 years. Charles was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War.

Charles enlisted in June 1940 and served as a sapper with the 3rd Battalion, Royal Canadian Engineers. He was injured in an accident while on duty in England in June 1942 and lost his left arm. After returning home to Canada he worked as a Postmaster. Charles joined The War Amps Quebec Branch in 1967 and held the position of National Director, Quebec Branch for more than 20 years. He also served as President of the Quebec Branch.

Charles devoted many years of service to the War Amps Association. He applied the War Amps motto “amputees helping amputees” by sharing his story with the child amputees and their families who he met at Child Amputees (CHAMP) seminars. Charles received the Honorary CHAMP Membership for his tireless work with The War Amps.

The funeral service was celebrated on 20 March at 10:30 am in the church of Saint-François de Beauceville and from there to the parish cemetery. In Memorium donations to the Société Alzheimer Chaudière-Appalaches (440, boul. Vachon Sud C.P.1, Sainte-Marie, Beauce, G6E 3B4) would be appreciated. Sgt Gregory T Leclair, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Gregory T Leclair, CD (Ret'd), peacefully at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital on 28 February  2021 in his 79th year.

Born in Renfrew ON, Greg enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1960 and started his military career as a Photo Technician. He joined  Mapping and Charting Establishment (MCE) and the Canadian Military Engineers in 1973 from his posting at Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment at Canadian Forces Base Cold Lake AB.

Greg served most of his career with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Map Reproduction Technician in the MCE Reproduction Division. He was posted to the Graphic Arts section in CFB Edmonton in 1986 and retired from the Canadian Forces the next year. Greg then went to work at the Canadian Forces Jump School and eventually settled near CFB Trenton in his retirement.

At Greg's request, cremation has taken place and there will be no further services.

MWO Guy Adam Law, CD

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Guy Adam Law, CD, unexpectedly in Kabul, Afghanistan on 25 February 2021 at age 48. Guy was a Construction Engineer Superintendent serving on assignment with Global Affairs Canada as the Operations and Facilities Maintenance Officer for the Canadian Embassy in Kabul.

Born in Saskatoon SK, Guy joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1991 as a Reservist in the North Saskatchewan Regiment. He transferred to the Regular Force in 1994 and served with the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in Winnipeg for five years, including a six month tour in Bosnia.

Guy remustered to the Canadian Military Engineers in 1999 as an Electrical Distribution Systems Technician. Upon the successful completion of his QL3 training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (CFSME), Guy was posted to Dundurn SK where he completed his apprenticeship, his QL5 training at CFSME, and a six-month deployment to the Golan Heights. Upon returning from this deployment, he was promoted to Master Corporal and posted to CFB Winnipeg.

In 2005, Guy deployed to Canadian Forces Station Alert for a six month tour as ‘Hydro One.’ This was followed by his successful completion of his QL6A course at CFSME, promotion to the rank of Sergeant, and then being posted to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa. He completed a nine-month tour in Afghanistan during his 2 CER tour and was promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer.

After completion of his QL6B course, Guy was posted to CFB North Bay (2011-2015), during which time he completed a five-month tour in Kuwait. After being promoted to MWO in 2015, Guy was posted to Real Property Operations (RP Ops) in Moose Jaw and took over as the OC In 2017. Guy was then posted to RP Ops Detachment at CFB Borden in 2018 as the Unit Sergeant Major. He was posted to the Canadian Embassy in Kabul in August 2020 as the facility Operations and Maintenance Officer.

During his career in the Infantry and the Canadian Military Engineers, Guy served on four operational deployments: Afghanistan, the Golan Heights and twice in the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. He received a Commander-in-Chief Commendation for his performance.

Michael Wayne Syms

We regret to advise of the death of Michael Wayne Syms of Hamilton ON, unexpectedly at home on 25 February 2021 at age 77.

Wayne served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in his youth. For most of his career, he worked at Stelco/Canadian Drawn Steel. Wayne was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36 in Dundas.

Friends will be received by the family on Tuesday afternoon, 2 March 2021, from 5-7:00 p.m., by signing up online on Wayne's obituary on the funeral home website. All Covid-19 regulations will apply. HCol Robert Gordon “Bob” Douglas, KStJ, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Honorary Colonel Robert Gordon “Bob” Douglas, KStJ, CD (Ret’d), peacefully on 26 February 2021 at age 90. Bob started his notable service in the Canadian Army with 2nd Field Engineer Regiment in Toronto.

Bob grew up during the Depression Years in North Toronto. His interest in the military started early with the Army Cadets where he was the Cadet Commanding Officer of the Lawrence Park Collegiate Cadet Corps in Toronto. As a Master Cadet, Bob was chosen to attend the first Special Cadet Camp in Banff AB.

Bob joined the Militia as a Sapper in the 2nd Field Engineer Regiment in Toronto and rose to the rank of Sergeant in the Regiment. He then joined The Royal Regiment of Canada where he was quickly promoted to Lieutenant. Bob then joined the British Army on a special two-year contract with The King's (Liverpool) in Hong Kong and joined the SAS Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya. At that time, the SAS was involved in deep jungle patrols against communist terrorists led by Chin Peng. Qualified as an SAS demolition specialist, he was involved in a night parachute drop on a mission to destroy a large enemy bridge.

On returning to Canada, Bob rejoined The Royal Regiment of Canada and, after a series of regimental postings, rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and commanded the Regiment. When his firm moved him to Montreal, Bob became G1 (Training) in the newly formed Militia headquarters of Sector de L'Est in Quebec.  Over the following years, Bob served as both the Honorary Lieutenant Colonel and Honorary Colonel of The Royal Regiment of Canada, as Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of The Toronto Scottish Regiment, and as Honorary Colonel of The Grey and Simcoe Foresters. He was Aide de Camp to Lieutenant Governors Keiller MacKay and Earle Roe. Bob’s final assignment with the military was as Chairman of the Executive Committee of The Council of Honorary Colonels of the Canadian Army.

After 23 years with National Cash Register, Bob became an Investment Advisor, with a career spanning 30 years through many mergers, including Merrill Lynch. During this span, Bob attained the highest credential in the industry when he became a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute (FCSI).

Bob was very involved in Community activities. He was Chairman of the Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief (Canada) and Toronto Commander of the The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. Bob was also Vice Chair of the Veterans Advisory Committee of the Board of Sunnybrook Hospital; was a Governor of the Corps of Commissionaires (Great Lakes);,  Director of the World Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Canada; President of the  St. John Ambulance (Ontario); a member of the  International Counter-Terrorism Officers Association; and President of the Fort York Branch No. 165, Royal Canadian Legion. Bob was a member of Royal Canadian Military Institute, the Granite Club of Toronto and the Barrie Country Club.

Bob received numerous honours and awards during his career. He was appointed Knight, The Most Venerable Order of St. John as well as Knight Commander, Hospitaller Order of St. Lazarus. Bob was also awarded the British Army General Service Medal (Malaya Bar); Canadian Forces Decoration (with  three clasps); the Canadian Centennial Medal, the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal; the Canadian 125th Commemorative Medal; the Queen's Golden Jubilee;  the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal; France’s Volunteer Combatant Cross and the Polish Gold Cross of Merit.

Bob had an interest in hiking and mountains. He hiked across the United Kingdom on the  "Sea to Sea" campaign and raised $20,000 for St. John Ambulance. Bob climbed Kilimanjaro, hiked with Tenzing Norgay in Sikkim, India, hiked to the Mount Everest Base Camp in Nepal and climbed many times in the Matterhorn area in Switzerland.

Bob retired from his position as Vice President of RBC Domino Securities in 2015 at age 85. He retired to the family country estate "Grenadierwoods" in Horseshoe Valley. Here he enjoyed tinkering with old jeeps and chain sawing trails through the 80 acres of mature trees where he enjoyed walking through with his friends and family.

A funeral service will be held when the Covid-19 circumstances allow. Cpl Rodney Dean MacDonald

We regret to advise of the unexpected death of Corporal Rodney Dean MacDonald of 17 Wing Detachment in Dundurn SK on 20 February 2021 at age 44.

Rodney was born and raised in New Brunswick and joined the Canadian Forces in 1996. He started his military career in as an electrician in the Navy in CFB Esquimalt. He had been serving aboard HMCS Protecteur in 2014 when the engine caught fire requiring all hands to battle the fire for 11 hours, in the dark without power in rough seas. Rodney transferred from the Navy shortly afterwards and was posted to Canadian Forces Communications Establishment in Kingston ON. He later remustered to Plumbing and Heating Technician in 2016 and completed his initial trades training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in CFB Gagetown NB.  His first posting as a Canadian Military Engineer was to Detachment Dundurn in 2017 where he worked with the Regional Properties Detachment in Dundurn before moving to Range Control in Dundurn.

Cremation has taken place and Rodney’s remains have returned to his family home of New Brunswick. A memorial service, to celebrate the life of Corporal Rodney MacDonald is being considered for Summer 2021. Online condolences can sent to the family at the funeral home.

William Leslie “Les” King

We regret to advise of the death of William Leslie “Les” King, peacefully at his home on 16 February 2021 in Peterborough ON in his 98th year.

Les was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War who served overseas. After the war, he was a 43-year employee of Canadian General Electric.

A private family service will be held in the Chapel of Highland Park Funeral Centre. Interment to follow in Highland Park Cemetery. In his memory, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be sent to the funeral home.

Maj Edward Thomas “Ed” Galway, MC, GM, MBE, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Edward Thomas “Ed” Galway, MC, GM, MBE, CD (Ret’d) of Burlington ON at the age of 102 on 14 February 2021.

Ed Galway was born and raised in Toronto ON and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering from the University of Toronto. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the Canadian Army on 28 April 1941. He was a decorated Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War, served in the Canadian High Commission in London and completed a UN tour on the India-Pakistan border in Kashmir.

Lt Galway started his Second World War service with the 3rd Field Company. During his time in England, he was put in charge of a dock repair on the sea coast when during a storm, he rescued a sapper who had fallen into the dangerous surf under the pier. For this, he was awarded the George Medal. In August 1943, the 3rd Field Company took part in Operation HUSKY, the invasion of Sicily. During the Battle of Agira, Lt Galway led a reconnaissance into the town centre, arriving hours before the infantry. He was able to withdraw and in an ensuing firefight, his party lost one man killed but in return killed five German soldiers. Lt Galway was later posted to the 11th Field Company fighting in Northwest Europe. In the opening days of the Battle of the Schedlt, he was awarded a Military Cross for bravery putting a bridge across the Antwerp-Turnhout Canal under fire and observation.

Ed stayed in the Army after the war. In 1952, he was posted to Korea and took command of the 23rd Field Squadron. For his very effective leadership of the squadron during the Korean War, and especially in preparing for the defence of ‘The Hook’, a key position on the Jamestown Line, he was made a Member of the British Empire. Ed completed his working career in the Department of Finance in Ottawa ON.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Private Family Service will be held. Donations if desired can be made to The War Amps, The Poppy Trust Fund, or The Red Cross.

Edward Kingsley “King” Donovan

We regret to advise of the death of Edward Kingsley “King” Donovan, a resident of the Perley and Rideau Veterans' Health Centre in Ottawa, peacefully on 12 February 2021 at the age of 97.  King served Canada in the Royal Canadian Engineers and was a long time resident of Mink Lake, ON.

Clifford Perrun

We regret to advise the passing of Clifford Perrun on 29 January 2021 in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 86 years.

Clifford grew up during the Depression and the Second World War.  After the war, he served in the Royal Canadian Engineers, worked for the railway, in the grocery business, and for messenger companies in Winnipeg before spending his retirement in first in Rock Creek BC, and later Ste. Anne, MB.

Clifford was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 60 years. Clifford had a musical talent for playing the harmonica and could sing as well. He was a self-taught handyman and a cook, especially on the BBQ. He liked road trips and camping and fishing. He was a fan of the Toronto Blue Jays, the Leafs, and though he would never really admit it, the Bombers and Jets. Most importantly, he loved his family beyond the words he had to express it.

MWO Richard H “Rick” Brown, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Richard  H “Rick” Brown, CD (Ret’d) in Whitby, ON in the early morning of 21 January 2021, at the age of 69 years. Rick was a former member of 3  Field Engineer Regiment (3 FER) in Montreal QC and 2 Field Engineer Regiment (2 FER) in Toronto, ON.

Rick grew up in Montreal, joining 3 FER in 1967 and, for the next 17 years, was appointed to a number of different positions in the Regiment before moving to Whitby in 1984. He transferred to 2 FER for a short period and then retired from the Canadian Forces after 20 years of service. Rick’s interest in the military did not stop there, however, as he would often visit friends at 3 FER and was present at the Hillside Armoury closing Mess Dinner in April 2015.  He was a passionate contributor to the 3 FER Facebook group and an avid volunteer at the Ontario Regiment Museum in Oshawa, often leading military vehicle restoration projects for the museum.

A funeral service is scheduled for 24 September 2021 starting at 10:00am at Mount Lawn Funeral Home & Cemetery in Whitby, Ontario. A reception at the  Ontario Regiment Museum to follow. If desired, memorial donations in Rick’s memory may be made to the Ontario Regiment Museum.

Capt Ruth-Ann Schamuhn Beaudry, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Ruth-Ann Schamuhn Beaudry, CD (Ret’d) in Comox BC on 18 January 2021 after her battle with cancer.

Ruth-Ann graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston in 1999 and served as an Canadian Military Engineer officer in 5e Régiment du Génie de Combat in Valcartier QC (1999-2002). During this tour she became qualified as the first female Combat Diver. After her posting to 5e  RGC, Ruth-Ann made a career change to become a Medical Officer.

After becoming a CF Medical Officer, Ruth-Ann served as a physician at Canadian Forces Base Trenton ON. She completed a year of Post Graduate training in Internal Medicine at Queen's University (2012-13) and the following year in Family Medicine. Ruth-Ann's illness forced her to give up her practice in early 2018 and the family moved to Comox BC, where her husband Jeff continues to serve as a SAR Tech. Ruth-Ann was released from the Canadian Forces in April 2020.

Cpl Stephen Reid Maysfield, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Stephen Reid Maysfield, CD (Ret'd) on 16 January 2021 at the age of 66 at his home in Leitches Creek, Cape Breton NS after a brief battle with cancer. Steve served his country at home and abroad for 21 years with both The Royal Canadian Regiment and the Canadian Military Engineers.  

Steve was born in Pleasant Villa NB and joined the Canadian Forces in 1972 at the age of 17. After Basic Training, he joined the Royal Canadian Regiment as an Infanteer. His career in the infantry included postings to Camp Gagetown NB (1972-76) and Germany (1976-78) as well as a deployment on United Nations peacekeeping duties in Cyprus ( Apr - Sep 1973). During his career in the infantry, Steve earned qualifications as: Basic Parachutist, Basic Sniper, US Army Parachutist, and the French Commando Course.

In 1979 Steve sought a career change and remustered to the Plumber Gasfitter trade with the Canadian Military Engineers. In his new trade he was posted to CFB Calgary (1981-83), CFB Chilliwack (1983-87), and CFB Gagetown (1987-92) - including a period with 22 Field Squadron. With the Canadian Military Engineers, Steve deployed to: Israel (May-June 1981), Kuwait (June-November 1991), and twice to CFS Alert (1979 and 1981).

After retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1992, Stephen became co-owner of Vision Heating and Ventilation in Bras d’Or NS.

Steve had his own small Military Engineer family. One daughter is a retired Water, Fuels and Environmental Technician master corporal while another daughter is a retired Combat Engineer sergeant. One son-in-law was a former RSM of 36 Combat Engineer Regiment and another is a former Combat Engineer warrant officer.

There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church in Queenstown NB in May 2021. Online words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at the funeral home.

Cpl Dermot O'Toole, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Dermot O'Toole, CD (Ret’d) on 15 January 2021 in Renews NL after battling a long and complicated illness. Derm served in both the Royal Canadian Artillery and the Canadian Military Engineers.

Derm was a merchant seaman at age 17 and started his military with the Royal Canadian Artillery – following in the footsteps of his father. After his recruit training in Cornwallis, his career as a Gunner saw him posted to Canadian Forces Base Shilo MB and in Germany for several postings.

Derm remustered to the Refrigeration and Mechanical  Systems Technician trade with the Canadian Military Engineers in the early 1980s. After training in Chilliwack BC at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, he was posted to Canadian Forces Station Barrington NS. He later served at CFB Chatham NB. When Derm took his release from the Canadian Forces shortly after completing his Level 5 training, he moved back to Newfoundland and worked in Alberta.

A celebration of Derm's life will take place on Monday, 18 January from 6 to 9 pm at Fahey's Funeral Home in Fermeuse NL. Funeral mass will be on Tuesday at 11:30 am on Tuesday at Holy Apostles Church in Renews, followed by a burial. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Sgt Henry William Ficke (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Henry William Ficke (Retired) on 13 January 2021 in Kelowna BC at the age of 84 years. He was born on 20 December 1936. 

Henry served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. Following his service, he worked on the family farm with his twin brother and father. He was active in the community as a church Deacon and a Scout Master as well. He was a long time member of the Westbank Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. His love of food, cooking and jogging also played a large part in his life.

Due to COVID restrictions there will be no funeral at this time.

LCol Laurent R. Bergeron, CD (Ret’d)

Nous avons le regret de vous informer du décès du lieutenant-colonel Laurent R. Bergeron, CD (retraité) à Boucherville QC le 12 janvier 2021 à l'âge de 89 ans.

Laurent est entré au Collège militaire de Saint-Jean en 1969 et a obtenu son diplôme du Collège militaire royal de Kingston en 1974 avec son baccalauréat en génie électrique. Il a également obtenu son MBA plus tard à l'Université McGill. Laurent a servi avec le 3e Régiment du génie de campagne à Montréal où il est devenu commandant (1968-70) et a été membre du Sénat et de la Fondation du 3 FER au début des années 2000.

Laurent a débuté sa carrière de cadre chez Westinghouse et a pris sa retraite de Nexans. Il a été très impliqué dans divers organismes caritatifs et a fondé la ligue de hockey Les Sages de la Rive-Sud pour les 70 ans et plus.

En raison du COVID-19, une célébration de la vie de Laurent aura lieu ultérieurement. Les condoléances en ligne peuvent être envoyées au salon funéraire. Des dons commémoratifs au nom de Laurent peuvent être faits à une œuvre de bienfaisance de votre choix.
