Sgt John Hélie, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant John Hélie, CD (Ret’d), in the Chilliwack Hospital on  9 January 2026 at age 83. 

John was born in Trois-Rivières QC, one of twelve siblings. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1959  and served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 27 years as a Combat Engineer and a Heavy Equipment Operator. He spent most of his career in our field squadrons and saw his share of deployments. John was in 4 Field Squadron in Germany (1962-64) and then in 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack BC where he was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces National Hockey Championship team in 1968. John then served in 5e Régiment du génie de combat in Valcartiers QC (1968-70), following which he was a Heavy Equipment instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC.


Following his retirement from the Canadian Forces, John remained in Chilliwack and worked for the Bank of Montreal.

When John retired in Chilliwack, he contributed to his community. He was very active with his Royal Canadian Legion Branch where he contributed in many roles,  including leading the Colour Party, participating in ceremonial services, and assisting as a maintenance volunteer. John also drove patients to cancer clinic appointments in Vancouver. He was awarded the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers in 2017 for his dedication and enthusiasm.

A Legion Poppy service and Celebration of Life will be held for John at the Chilliwack Legion  Branch 205 on 7 March at 1:00 PM.

Spr Owen David Atkinson (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of a Second World War Royal Canadian Engineer veteran, Sapper Owen David Atkinson (Ret'd) of Wedgeport NS on 8 January at Veteran’s Place, Yarmouth NS. Owen would have been 103 on 19 January 2026.

Born in Clarke’s Harbour NS, Owen lost his mother when he was eleven and was taken out of school the following year to fish with his father to help support the family. A few years later, during the Second World War, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers, where he trained as a heavy truck driver and served in Canada.

After the war, Owen bought a lobster license for twenty-five cents, and took a skiff out onto the ocean. From this humble start, he became a successful and well-respected lobster fisherman.

Owen was a proud lifetime member and founding member of the Wedgeport Legion Branch 155. He was also a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on 13 January 2026, in St. Ambrose Co-Cathedral Church in Yarmouth. The reception will be held at the Wedgeport Royal Canadian Legion branch, following the burial in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Wedgeport.

CWO Thomas Ian Ross, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Thomas Ian Ross, CD (Ret’d), peacefully on 2 January 2026 at PeopleCare Nursing Home in Meaford ON, at the age of 87.

Born in Sarnia ON, Tom served a full career with the Canadian Military Engineers and rose to become a Chief Warrant Officer in the Construction Engineer trades. He had many skills and talents – among them his ability to speak German, Russian, and French. 

After retiring from the Canadian Forces in British Columbia, Tom and his family moved to Alberta. He was a longstanding member of the Masons and became The Worshipful Master in his Lodge in Calgary.  He advanced to The Grand Lodge of Alberta and held the position of Junior Warden.  After he moved to Meaford ON, he held many positions in  Pythagoras Lodge 137.  Tom was also a member of the Owen Sound Legion Branch No. 6. 

A service celebrating Tom’s life will be conducted at Knox Presbyterian Church in Meaford at a date to be announced. Interment will take place at Lakeview Cemetery.

CWO Yvon Serre, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Chief Warrant Officer Yvon Serre, CD (Ret’d), unexpectedly on 29 December  2025 at his home in Petawawa ON at the age of 75 years.

Yvon served with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Military Firefighter for 36 years. As a young Airman, he was an instructor at the Canadian Forces Fire School, and he returned many years later to become the Firefighting Academy’s Chief Warrant Officer. Some of his many career postings were to Canadian Forces Base Downsview ON, CFB North Bay ON, CFB Trenton ON, CFB Bagotville QC, CFB Goose Bay NL, Academy Chief Warrant Officer at the Canadian Forces Fire Academy in CFB Borden ON,  Air Command Headquarters in Winnipeg MB,  and his final posting back to CFB North Bay as the Base Chief Warrant Officer.

Yvon retired from the Canadian Forces in 2003 and settled in Petawawa ON where he was very active in managing and supporting the Petawawa Pantry food bank and related charitable efforts, such as the Christmas hamper and toy drive.

Respecting Yvon’s wishes, cremation has taken place. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Petawawa Pantry would be appreciated. Online condolences are available can be sent to the funeral home.

LCol Paul Guilbault, CD (Retd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Paul Guilbault, CD (Retd), peacefully on 26 December 2025, in Edmonton AB, at age 84 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born in Chicoutimi QC, Paul joined the Canadian Forces in 1960 and graduated from the Royal Military College Kingston in 1965 in Civil Engineering. An early posting of his career with the Canadian Military Engineers was with the Construction Engineering staff of I Air Division in Europe followed by his appointment as the Base Construction Engineering Officer in Valcartier QC (1972-79). Paul was then posted to National Defence Headquarters, where he led the Military Engineering Postings and Careers section for non-commissioned members of the Canadian Military Engineers. He was subsequently a member of the Directorate of Construction Engineering Requirements.

In retirement, Paul was the President of the Alberta Genealogy Association, where he helped countless individuals trace their ancestral roots. He was also involved with the Knights of Columbus.

Paul’s Funeral Service was on 15 January 2026 at St. Thomas D’Aquin Catholic Church {8410 89 Street NW Edmonton}. Online Condolences can be sent to the funeral home. LAC William “Willy” Wilkinson (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Leading Aircraftman William “Willy” Wilkinson (Ret’d) of St Catharines, ON, on 22 December 2025 at age 81. Willy served a tour as a Firefighter with the Royal Canadian Air Force Fire Service at RCAF Station Goose Bay. After retiring from the RCAF, he worked at Hayes Dana, a Canadian auto-parts manufacturer in St Catharines and later simultaneously ran his own photography business. 

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of his Life will be held in the future. Online condolences can be made to the funeral home. The family welcomes donations to the Niagara Children’s Centre or to the Niagara Health System - Walker Family Cancer Centre. 

Sgt Lawerence “Al” Allen CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Lawerence “Al” Allen CD (Ret’d) of Chilliwack BC on 9 December 2025. Al served with the Canadian Military Engineers as both a Combat Engineer  and a Water Supply Oils and Lubricants Technician.

Al enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 1975 and, after completing his recruit training at Canadian Forces Base Cornwallis NS, proceeded to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC to undertake his Combat Engineering training..  Upon graduating from his Basic Combat Engineering course, Al  was posted across the road to 3 Field Squadron for a 4-year tour (1975-79). This was followed by 4 Field Squadron in Germany (1979-83} after which he returned to Canada and remustered to Water Supply Oils and Lubricants Technician.

Al's career as a WSPOL Tech included postings to Canadian Forces Station Baldy Hughes BC (1983-88), CFB Shearwater NS (1988-90), CFB Greenwood NS (1990-93) the Militia Training Centre in Meaford ON (1993-96) and as an instructor at Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering at Chilliwack BC (1996-97).

During his WSPOL career, Al deployed to CFS Alert NU (May-Oct 1992) and on Operation BOXTOP in October 1986. While in CFS Baldy Hughes he deployed to CFS Shearwater (Nov-Dec 1985) and while in CFB Greenwood he deployed to Gulfport Mississippi in February 1993.

Al retired from the Canadian Forces in 1997 and had a second career with School District #33 in Chilliwack.

A celebration of life is being planned. Details will be advised when available.

Warrant Officer John F. Sudsbear, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer John F. Sudsbear, CD (Ret’d) of Kingston, Kings County NS, suddenly on 8 December 2025 at home at age 66.

Born in Saint John NB, John was a graduate of Simonds High School in Saint John. He joined the Canadian Military Engineers as a Combat Engineer in 1980. John’s first posting after completing his basic sapper training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering was to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Chilliwack BC. He eventually had ten career postings and eight deployments, including to Sarajevo. John remustered to Structures Technician in the mid 1980s and some of his Construction Engineering postings included twice to Canadian Forces Base Greenwood NS, and CFB Halifax. He retired from CFB Greenwood as a Warrant Officer after 35 years of service.

In keeping with John’s wishes,  there will be no visitation or funeral service.  Donations in his memory may be made to Wounded Warriors Canada or to Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 98, Kingston. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

MCpl Jean-Claude “Jake” Jacob, CD (Ret’d)

Nous avons le regret de vous annoncer le décès du caporal-chef pompier Jean-Claude « Jake » Jacob, CD (à la retraite), le 5 décembre 2025, à l’âge de 81 ans.

Jake a fait toute sa carrière au sein de l’Aviation royale canadienne et du Génie militaire canadien, à titre de pompier. Du début des années 1960 au milieu des années 1990, il a servi aux bases suivantes : la base aérienne royale canadienne LaMacaza (Québec), la base des Forces canadiennes Chatham (Nouveau-Brunswick), la BFC North Bay (Ontario), la SFC Chibougamau (Québec) et la BFC Saint-Jean (Québec). Jake a pris sa retraite de la BFC Saint-Jean et s’y est installé.

La famille recevra les condoléances le samedi 24 janvier 2026, de 10 h à 12 h 30, au Complexe funéraire Claude LeSieur (530, 4e rue, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec). Un hommage lui sera rendu à 12 h 30 au complexe funéraire. Vous pouvez adresser vos condoléances en ligne à la maison funéraire.

 

Sgt Phillip Maurice Ross Makin, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Phillip Maurice Ross Makin, CD (Ret’d)   of Edmonton on 1 December 2025 at age of 81 years.

Phil joined the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Combat Engineer in 1960 and served for 17 years with the Canadian Military Engineers. After completing his basic Field Engineer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC his career included postings to 4 Field Squadron in Werl Germany, I Field Squadron in Petawawa ON and 1 Airborne Field Squadron in Edmonton AB. Phil considered his time with the Airborne Regiment to be one of his greatest career achievements.

Cpl Zachary Wells

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Zachary Wells, at home on 25 November 2025, at the age of 29 years.

A native of St Thomas, ON, Zack joined the Reserve Force with 31 Combat Engineer Regiment in 2013 as a Combat Engineer and had spent time with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Edmonton AB. He remustered and was serving as a Mobile Support Equipment Operator with 1 Service Battalion. Zach was very active in the Mixed Martial Arts community.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Canadian Forces Base Edmonton Junior Ranks Mess (Lamplighter Room) on 9 December 2025 from 3:00 - 5:00 pm. 

A Military Funeral service will be held in his hometown of St Thomas ON on 11 December 2025 at 2:00 pm, in 31 Combat Engineer Regiment (The Elgin’s) Armouries {40 Wilson Ave. St. Thomas.}  Inurnment will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made out to the Canadian Forces Base Edmonton Junior Ranks Mess, of which Zachary was a proud member and leader.  Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Sgt Emilien “Emil” Therien, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Emilien “Emil” Therien, CD (Ret’d) of Gatineau QC, on 16 November at the age 85 years.

Born in Hull QC, Emile enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1962, as an Administrative Clerk. He subsequently served at St Hubert, Holberg, North Bay, France and Germany. Emile remustered to Map Reproduction Technician in 1972, and was posted to Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa.

During his first eight years with MCE, Emile had a number of employments in the Reproduction Division but found his forté was working in the Resource Centre, where he spent the next ten years providing information and entertainment for the unit. His extracurricular activities were considerable as he was a qualified official for hockey, softball and track and field, 

Emile retired from the Canadian Forces in 1990 after 28 years of service. He immediately found employment as a Class-B call-out at Communication Command Headquarters at Tunney’s Pasture. In Ottawa.  He returned to MCE in 1991 as a temporary clerk in the Resource Centre, then moved to the Orderly Room. Emile retired in 1996.

The funeral will take place on Saturday, 13 December 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint-Paul Church {26 Eardley Road in Gatineau (Aylmer sector).} The family will receive condolences at the church beginning at 10:15 a.m.

CWO Alan Robert Nixon, MMM, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Alan Robert Nixon, MMM, CD (Ret’d)
of Stonewall MB, on 14 November 2025 just short of his 81st birthday.

Al was born on the family farm in Gordon MB and spent his early years in that community. His education started at the East Rosser School and he finished his education at Stonewall Collegiate when the family moved to Brooklands.

Al joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1965. His first posting was to Rivers MB and he saw service in many countries and most provinces and territories in Canada over his 33-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers. His career postings included Portage la Prairie MB, Chilliwack BC, Cold Lake AB and Winnipeg MB.

Al worked at rebuilding and repairing infrastructure for the Canadian Armed Forces and the United Nations from Canadian Forces Station Alert in Nunavit to war-torn countries like Bosnia. He assisted in the restructuring and rebuilding in Montserrat from the devastation after Hurricane Hugo tore through that country. He also deployed on two six-month tours in the Middle East with the United Nations, as well as shorter tours around the world and Canada.  Al’s last posting was Winnipeg, where he served from 1982 until his retirement in 1996 after 33 years of service.

One of Al’s great loves was his 59 years with Scouts Canada that spanned from starting a local Cub Pack to serving in positions at the provincial level.  He started the Cub Pack in CFB Chilliwack in the early 1970s and organized a Jamboree at Cultus Lake that started out with about 20 cubs, and ended with over 500 Cub Scouts from the Fraser Valley/Lower Mainland area. He received many commendations and awards for his numerous achievements with Scouts Canada over the years.

Al was very active in his communities. He was a long-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion and, along with his wife Gayleen, he was a recipient of the Manitoba’s Lieutenant Governor’s “Make a Difference Community Award” in 2005. Al was a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternal Organization for over 25 years and served a term as Grand Master of Manitoba.

Achievements through his years in the Stonewall/Rockwood area were many and varied. He was a Neighbourhood Watch Co-Captain for some 20 years for the Oakwood Estates community. He served with the Stonewall Christmas Cheer Board from its inception for over 25 years. He was a life member of Blood Services and donated for over 50 years. He trained in logistics on the Canadian Red Cross Disaster Response Team from 2001 to 2009. He was a Medical Equipment Loans Service technician for the Stonewall Depot for several years. Al worked on the construction of The Youth for Christ Drop-in and served on the Building Maintenance Committee for the Stonewall United Church.

A Celebration of Life was held on 6 December 2025 at the Stonewall United Church { 369 First Ave N, Stonewall}, with a lunch that followed at the Odd Fellows Hall {374 First Street W, Stonewall}. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

WO Donald Corbett, CD (Ret’d)


We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Warrant Officer Donald Corbett,CD (Ret’d) on 4 November 2025.  

Don served over 40 years in the fire services. He was first a member of the Canadian Forces Fire Service, where he served at Canadian Force Base Chatham NB, Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Skeena, CFB Shearwater NS, CFB Trenton ON, Canadian Forces Fire Academy Borden ON and CFB Moncton NB. 

On retirement from the Canadian Forces, Don served as the Training Officer and Acting Fire Marshal in Nunavut. He then served as the Deputy Fire Chief of Operations for the City of Kingston ON and, finally, as the Deputy Fire Chief for the City of Belleville ON. Don was recognized with the Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal.

Funeral arrangements were private.

Capt Craig Joseph Quigley, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Craig Joseph Quigley, CD (Ret’d), of St. John’s NL on 4 November 2025 at the age of 48 years.

Craig grew up in Torbay NL, and joined the Primary Reserve as a Sapper with 56th Field Squadron in St John's, NL, in 1998. Commissioned from the Ranks shortly after completing his Basic Leadership Qualification, he served with 37 Combat Engineer Regiment in St. John’s and was also a Firefighter with the  St. John’s Regional Fire Department.

Craig was a lifelong learner, always seeking higher education to better himself personally and professionally, and to help him guide others in their careers. He was a graduate of Columbia Southern University with a Bachelor of Fire Science, a graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada with a Master of Public Administration, and countless courses and certifications related to his fire and military careers.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation was held at Caul’s Funeral Home on 6 November 2025. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations may be made to the Autism Society of Newfoundland. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Maj Frederick Thomas Dufour “Ted” Butler, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Frederick Thomas Dufour “Ted” Butler, CD (Ret’d)  , peacefully on 3 November 2025 in Victoria at the age of 88 after a brief illness. 

Born in Ottawa ON, Ted grew up at his family's motel, "The Butler," on Montreal Road. He graduated from Royal Military College Kingston in 1960, and received his Civil Engineering degree at McGill.

Ted served 25 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Military Engineers with postings that included: the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC,  the appointment as Base Construction Engineering Officer in Greenwood NS, and in Halifax NS, both at the Base Construction  Engineering Section and at Maritime Command Headquarters. Ted’s final posting was to Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt BC with the Construction Engineering Section.

Following his retirement from the Canadian Forces, Ted spent six years with the BC Forest Service, followed by 15 years as a Real Estate Agent. 

Ted volunteered as a Scout leader, a fundraiser for the Kidney Foundation & Salvation Army, and was involved in many clubs & associations, from the Military Engineers Association of Canada and the Engineering Institute of Canada, to the RMC Club and to his church, where he contributed in numerous ways.

A service to celebrate Ted's life will be held at St John the Divine Anglican  {1611 Quadra St, Victoria} on 24 November 2025 at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: www.heartandstroke.ca. Online condolences can be sent to the Times Colonist.

 

WO John Edward “Jack” Novak, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer John Edward “Jack” Novak, CD (Ret’d) in Chilliwack on 02 November at the age of 81 years. Jack was a Combat Engineer with both Airborne and Combat Diver specialties.

Jack enlisted in London ON. After completing his Basic Field Engineer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, he remained in Chilliwack with a posting to 3 Field Squadron. After this tour, Jack was posted to 1 Field Squadron in Petawawa ON in 1960, but it was a short tour as he was soon in Germany with 4 Field Squadron ( 1961 – 64). Jack returned home to Canada to 1 Field Squadron and became a qualified parachutist and on jump strength.

Jack was one of the large group of sapper Jumpers that were posted to Edmonton in 1968 upon the formation of 1 Airborne Field Squadron in Edmonton AB. After this tour, he returned to 1 Field Squadron (1970-73) before being posted back to the Canadian Airborne Regiment (1973-75). Jack’s last posting was as an instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering from which he retired.  He subsequently returned to uniform in the Reserves on Class B Service with CFB Chilliwack Base Ops (1986 - 91) after which he retired for the second time. Jack retired in the Chilliwack area

A Poppy Service will be held for Jack on Wednesday 18 February 2026 at 1300 hrs at the Chilliwack Legion.

WO Walter “Bud” Little, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of  Firefighter Warrant Officer Walter Edward “Bud” Little, CD (Ret’d), peacefully on 22 October 2025 at 92 in the home of his granddaughter in Moose Jaw SK.

Bud enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1951 and served a full career 25-year career as a Firefighter at many Air Force bases across Canada. In addition to his being an instructor at the Firefighter Training Company in Borden ON, Bud’s career postings included:  RCAF Stations Saskatoon SK,  Fort Nelson BC,  Beaver Lodge AB, Rockcliffe ON; Canadian Forces Stations Sioux Lookout, and Moisie QC; and Canadian Forces Bases Borden ON, Bagotville QC, Goose Bay NL, Moose Jaw SK  and Comox BC.

Bud retired from the Canadian Forces in 1976 and then worked for 20 years in the Saskatchewan Provincial Fire Commissioner’s Office, first in Regina SK and then in Saskatoon.  He retired in 1997 from the Fire Commissioners Office in Saskatoon where he resided until health issues necessitated a move to Moose Jaw in June of this year.

LCol Thomas Daniel MacKay, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Daniel MacKay, CD (Ret’d),  peacefully on 10 October 2025 at Ryan Hall in Bridgewater NS at the age of 81 years.

Tom grew up on the family farm in Elgin, Pictou County, NS. In his late teens, he moved away to pursue an Engineering degree at Mount Allison University under the Regular Officer Training Plan. Tom served a 33-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers.

After completing his Military Engineering Officer Training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, BC, Tom’s first posting was to 4 Field Squadron in Germany. He returned home to the Base Ottawa Construction Engineering section for a short tour before heading to Fort Belvoir with the Canadian Defence Liaison Staff in Washington DC.

Tom returned to Canada for a three-year posting at Mobile Command Headquarters that was interrupted by a year-long peacekeeping tour in Cyprus as the Force Engineer (1978).  Tom was then appointed Commanding Officer of 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa (1980-82). Following this tour, Tom headed back overseas with the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization Israel (1982), after which he was posted to Headquarters Central Army Group (CENTAG)for three years. Tom served his last posting with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) Staff in Belgium, 

Tom retired from the Canadian Forces in 1995. After retirement, he embraced a life of quiet reflection and exploration. He spent his summers in Chester NS, and his winters in Silverthorne Colorado, USA finding joy in the rhythm of the seasons and the landscapes he loved. 

A celebration of life will be held in Toms honour at the Chester Royal Canadian Legion Branch {14 Union Street in Chester} on Sunday, 16 November from 12 to 3 pm.  Donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice. Capt Bruno Moreau, CD

We regret to advise of the death of serving member Captain Bruno Moreau, CD on 2 October 2025. Captain Moreau was the Construction Engineering Officer of the Air Expeditionary Training Squadron of 2 Wing Bagotville QC.

Bruno enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in July 2012 as a  Combat Engineering officer at the Royal Military College. He transferred to Construction Engineering during his studies and graduated from RMC in 2017.

Bruno’s first posting was to 3rd  Material Support Squadron in Bagottville QC where he deployed on Operation  CADENCE in May 2018 for the G7 Summit in Charlevoix QC. The next summer, he was transferred to the Air Expeditionary Training Squadron (AETS) in 2 Wing and deployed to Romania on Operation REASSURANCE from July 2020 to January 2021.

After Bruno returned from Operation REASSURANCE, he was posted to 3 Wing in Bagotville, where he held several positions, including Officer Commanding Construction Engineering, Fire Chief, and Contracting Officer for the Real Property Operations Detachment. He redeployed to Latvia on Operation REASSURANCE from September 2023 to February  2024 as a project manager for the new Canadian camp at the Ceri Military Base in Latvia. Bruno returned to Bagotville but back with 2 Wing in the Air Expeditionary Training Squadron as Construction Engineering Officer, a position he held until his passing. 

A time to offer condolences is scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on 19 October 2025, followed by a celebration of life at 6:00 p.m. at the chapel of Canadian Forces Base Bagotville {Bldg B-114, at the corner of Chemin des Aviateurs and Ottawa Street in Alouette QC}. Military personnel attending are requested to wear DEU 1A.

Capt Rollie Keith, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Rollie Keith, CD (Ret’d), in Chilliwack General Hospital on 1 October 2025 at the age of 89 years. Rollie was an Armoured Corps officer who served at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering and at Canadian Forces Base Chilliwack and was very much part of our CME Family.

Inspired by his father, a First World War veteran of Vimy Ridge, Rollie joined the Army in 1955 during the Cold War. He began his career as an Armoured Corps Trooper and served more than 32 years in the Canadian Army. Rollie’s service included postings with Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians), the Canadian Airborne Regiment, and the 8th  Canadian Hussars.

Soon after completing his Basic Armoured Corps training, Rolly deployed to the Middle East during the 1956 Suez Crisis as a Ferret Scout Car driver with 56th Canadian Reconnaissance Squadron in the Sinai. Decades later, he served as a UN military observer in the Balkans during the Kosovo conflict, and in the early 2000s, travelled to Baghdad as an impartial observer before the Iraq War.

Rollie was the Armoured Corps Tactics Instructor at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (1978-80). He retired from the Canadian Forces in 1982 and earned a degree in history from Simon Fraser University. Rollie then returned to the Canadian Forces and served four more years at CFB Chilliwack with Base Ops before retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1991.

Rolly was deeply involved in his communities. A committed civic participant, he twice ran as the provincial New Democratic Party candidate for Chilliwack- Fraser Canyon. He was an enthusiastic participant in the “Left Coast Lancer” luncheons organized by the local Strathcona Association branch. Rollie was also Chair of the Fraser Valley Health Region, Vice-President of the Chilliwack Military Education Centre, and a frequent speaker in local schools on military history. Rollie also accompanied numerous battlefield tours in Europe as a historian, primarily focusing on the Second World War. 

A Legion Poppy service will be held on Tuesday, 14 October at 1300 hr at Branch #295 Chilliwack-Vedder Legion {5661 Vedder Rd, Chilliwack}. While the dress is casual, retired RCAC members are encouraged to wear regimental blazer, regimental tie, and medals.

Capt Edward Hans Regts (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Edward Hans Regts (Ret’d) of Abbottsford BC on 22  September 2025 at the age of 83 years. 

Ed was was born in Friesland, the Netherlands, during the Second World War, where his family was part of the Dutch resistance movement. After the war, they emigrated to Canada in 1953 to build a better life. They settled in Chatham ON where Ed became a top student and athlete. After joining the Canadian Forces through the Regular Officer Training Plan, Ed earned a Master of Applied Science from the University of Windsor.

Ed’s military career was primarily with 1 Construction Engineering Unit in Winnipeg MB, where he travellled the entirety of Canada, including the Arctic. Upon retirement from the Canadian Forces, Ed moved to British Columbia, where he was in charge of water and sewer for the City of Surrey. Later, as a Design Engineer and subsequently Director of Public Works in Abbotsford/Matsqui for 30 years, he oversaw extensive road improvement and water utility projects, as well as the expansion of recreational facilities.

Ed's proudest professional accomplishments were the Norris Creek watershed, the James Sewage Treatment Facilities, and the completion of Fishtrap Creek Park. With its people-oriented structures, accessible trails, and enhanced wildlife habitat, Fishtrap Creek received national recognition and environmental awards and became the starting point for The Discovery Trail, which now extends to Chilliwack. 

Ed believed that education was a fundamental human right and he was an early advocate for increasing the number of women in STEM fields. Ed's notable volunteer contributions include his work with the Western Canada Summer Games, the Abbotsford Sports Hall of Fame, and the Abbotsford Twisters Gymnastics Club.

WO II Stewart Gerald “Gerry” Wyatt, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer 2nd Class Stewart Gerald “Gerry” Wyatt, CD (Ret'd). a resident of Kipnes Care in Edmonton AB on 20 September 2025 at the age of 98 years.

Gerry’s early life centred on the Army as he was born in Wolseley Barracks in London ON. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers as the Second World War was coming to a close.  After Gerry learned his draughtsman trade at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering, duty took him to Edmonton in 1950 at the start of a 25-year career with the RCE.

Following his retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1967, Gerry transitioned his trade into civilian life, first with a two-year stint at Atomic Energy Canada and then a move to Pinawa, MB. He next secured his final career position at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where he worked in the physical plant until his retirement at the age of 63. After a lengthy and healthy retirement, Gerry entered the Kipnes Care facility in early 2024.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, 8 October 2025, at the Hainstock Funeral Home in Edmonton. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
 

CWO George Douglas “Robbie“ Robertson MMM, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer George Douglas “Robbie“ Robertson, MMM, CD (Ret’d) of Chilliwack BC, on 18 September 2025 at the age of 87 years. 

Born in Gilford ON, Robbie embarked on a distinguished career in the Canadian Forces and the Canadian Military Engineers in 1955 and served with unwavering commitment for 38 years. 

A Mechanical Systems Technician, Robbie rose through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer.  His service took him to various parts of Canada and Germany, including North Bay, Cold Lake, Clinton, Saint- Sylvester, Falconbridge, Holberg, Chilliwack and Lahr, Germany.-One of his most demanding and memorable postings was in the Arctic at Canadian Forces Station Alert in Nunavut and CFS Holberg where he made significant contributions. 

Among his accomplishments, Robbie served as the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering's Chief Warrant Officer from 1983 to 1985. The CFSME Robertson Cane award honours CWO Robertson, who was the first School CWO from outside the Field Engineer trade. Robbie was invested as a Member of the Order of Military Merit in 1986

Upon his retirement from the Canadian Forces, Robbie continued to serve his community. He was a member of the Rotary club in Chilliwack, active with the Mountain Citizen Advisory Committee for the Correctional Service, Chair of the Kent Harrison Foundation, many years as President of the Mount Cheam Volkssport Club, was active with Agassiz Harrison Community Services Christmas Hamper Program in the early 1990s and volunteered for 12 years with the Chilliwack Bruins and then the Chilliwack Chiefs.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Robbie’s memory to BC SPCA or The Chilliwack General Hospital. Online Condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

MCpl William “Hootch” Ralph Bergdahl, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Master Corporal William “Hootch” Ralph Bergdahl, CD (Ret'd) at home in St John NB on 15 September 2025 at the age of 75 years.

A native of Montreal QC, Bill served for 20 years as a Firefighter with the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Military Engineers on HMCS Saguenay and at Canadian Forces Bases Greenwood NS, Portage MB and Chatham NB.  After retiring from the Canadian Forces, Bill enjoyed time in Florida before settling in Saint John, where he made his home. 

In accordance with Bill’s wishes, no funeral will be held. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home. Donations in memory of Bill may be made to any charity supporting Canadian Veterans or to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

 

LCol Ranjeet Kumar Gupta, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel Ranjeet Kumar Gupta, CD (Ret’d), peacefully at his home in Ottawa on 15 August 2025 at the age of 59. Rangeet was Director of Environmental Engineering Management with ADM IE.

Ranjeet was born in Dallas, Texas and grew up in Sainte-Foy QC. He joined the Canadian Forces under the Regular Officer Training Plan and graduated from the Royal Military College in Kingston in 1987 with a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering. After completing his officer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, his first posting was to 5Régiment du génie de combat in Valcartier QC where, over two postings, he served in a variety of field positions, including Field Troop Commander, Operations Officer, Field Squadron Commander and Deputy Commanding Officer. 

Ranjeet also served as Regular Support Staff with 21 Field Engineer Squadron (M) in Flin Flon MB (1990 to 1992). In 1993, he deployed to Bosnia with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal 22e Régiment on Operation CAVALIER ROTO 1 as an engineer squadron Second-in-Command.

Ranjeet commanded 9e Escadron de génie (M) in Rouyn-Noranda QC (1996 to 1998). He was appointed honorary Aide-de-Camp to the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec in 1997 and commanded the Canadian Forces Recruiting Centre in Montreal QC (1998 to 2001). He then returned to 5e RGC where he was Deputy Commander before becoming Commandant of the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering (2005 to 2008).

For his second career, Ranjeet joined the Public Service with ADM IE where he became Director of Environmental Engineering Management.

A graveside service will be held on 26 September 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the National Military Cemetery, located at 280 Beechwood Avenue in Ottawa. A reception will follow to honor and remember the life of Ranjeet.  A digital Condolence Book is available.

Col Charles Randolph Keple, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Colonel Charles Randolph Keple, CD (Ret’d), unexpectedly in Regina SK on 8 August 2025, at age 83.

Charles was born in Regina. His  38-year military career began in 1959 when he became a Rifleman with the Regina Rifle Regiment. The following year, he joined the Regular Officer Training Plan and studied Civil Engineering at Royal Roads Military College in Victoria and at Royal Military College in Kingston. 

After completing his Military Officer training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, BC, Charles’ first posting was to 2 Field Squadron, Gagetown. However, this posting lasted only eight months, as he soon joined 4 Field Squadron in Werl, Germany, in 1965. In Germany, Charles served as Park Troop Commander, Administrative Officer, and as 2 Troop Commander with the 2 Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group for two years.

Upon his return to Canada in 1968, Captain Keple became the Detachment Construction Engineering Officer at Longue Pointe (Montreal) QC.  Following this tour, he attended the Army Staff Course at the Royal Military College of Science in Shrivenham, UK (1970). Returning to Canada, Charles became the Equipment Officer with the newly formed Directorate of Military Engineering. Upon promotion, he became the head of the Directorate of Military Engineering Requirements as his section expanded.  

Charles was next a student at the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in Toronto and became the Base Technical Services Officer for CFB Portage la Prairie MB in 1975 upon completing this course. After three years, he served next in Winnipeg. MB as Senior Staff Officer Military Engineer Plans, and Senior Staff Officer Quartering at Air Command Headquarters.

Promoted to colonel in 1981, Charles became the Command Construction Engineer at Mobile Command Headquarters in St-Hubert QC. He attended National Defence College in Kingston in 1985 after this FMC HQ tour and subsequently joined the NATO staff as Secretary to the Chief of Staff at HQ AFCENT, Brunssum, the Netherlands. 

Returning to National Defence Headquarters in 1989, Charles was appointed Director General Military Engineering Operations and Branch Adviser of the Canadian Military Engineer Branch (1989-1993).

Following his retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1993, Charles served as president of the Military Engineers Association of Canada and led the formation of the  Canadian Military Engineers Association in 2000. He mentored many engineers and advocated for women and engineers in the Canadian Armed Forces. He actively volunteered with many charities, and was recognized with Queen Elizabeth II's Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals, the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers and the Order of Saskatchewan. Charles was very proud of his longstanding support of the Rotary Club, where he was known as a thoughtful, kind and gentle leader who was devoted to serving others..

Sgt Brian Francis Clyde Gunn, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Sergeant Brian Francis Clyde Gunn, CD (Ret’d) on 7 August 2025 in Clementsport NS at the age of 79 years.

Brian was born in Halifax NS. His passion for firefighting began when he was young and evolved to becoming his career when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Firefighter. He served on bases across the country including some close to home in Nova Scotia at Canadian Forces Greenwood and Canadian Forces Station Barrington. 

Brian served his communities, whether as a Scout leader, organizing Friday night suppers at the Clementsport Legion, or solving problems for family, friends and neighbours. He had a gift for making people feel valued, and his friendships spanned decades.

A Celebration of Brian’s life was held at the Clementsport Legion {2008 Highway 1, Clementsport} on 23 August with an informal service, followed by a reception and sharing of memories. Donations in Brian’s memory may be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Cancer Patient Navigation Program or the Clementsport Legion. Lt Henry William “Bill” Bishop

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Henry William “Bill” Bishop, peacefully on 3 August 2025, at the Brantford General Hospital at the age of 94 years.

Bill was born and raised in Montreal QC and graduated from West Hill High. He worked for four years to save money for his university tuition but then decided the best way to pay for his degree in civil engineering was to join the Regular Officer Army Training Plan.

Bill was posted to Camp Chilliwack BC in 1955 after he graduated from McGill but soon moved to Work Point Barracks with the Works Company in Esquimalt BC. Bill was next selected for the Long Survey Course with the Royal Engineers in England and was subsequently posted to the Army Survey Establishment in Ottawa. While serving at ASE, he surveyed the Princess Royal Islands, two navigational hazards in the Prince of Wales Strait located between Banks and Victoria Islands .

Bill moved from Ottawa to Camp Barriefield ON (now part of Canadian Forces Base Kingston)  with the Works Company for his last posting. Bill retired from the Canadian Forces in 1963 and worked in the papermill industry in Trois Rivières QC and then in Powell River BC. He then worked in Calgary for Montreal Engineering and for Williams Brothers Canada Ltd., where one of his projects was the Bighorn hydroelectric dam that formed Abraham Lake.

Bill joined the federal Public Service in Edmonton in 1973 with Transport Canada. He later joined Northern and Indian Affairs and Public Works Canada where he established water treatment plants in First Nations communities in Alberta and the North until his retirement in 1995. 

Bill had a keen sense of community service and joined the Friends of Medicare, the Waskahegan Trail Association, and the McQueen Community League. In 2014 he decided to move to a retirement home in Brantford where he could be closer to family.

A Celebration of Life for Bill took place on  24 August 2025 at Five Oaks Retreat Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bill's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.Online condolences  can be sent to the funeral home.

 

Richard Allen

We regret to advise of the death of Richard Allen of Red Deer AB, on 22 July 2025 at the age of 78 years. Richard served as a Combat Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers.

Born in Weyburn SK, Richard resided in Thompson MB for many years before settling in Red Deer AB. After his service as a Combat Engineer, he worked as a project manager with Executive Home Building Center for 18 years, and later with True-Line Homes and Goodmen Roofing. 

 A Celebration of Richard's Life was held at Parkland Funeral Home in  Red Deer AB on 29 July. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honour Richard’s memory by performing a random act of kindness. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
 

MWO // Adjum Carol “Carl” Ruel, CD (Ret'd // ret)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Carol “Carl” Ruel, CD (Ret’d) in Sherbrooke QC at the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Sherbrooke of the Centre de santé et de services sociaux, on 25 July 2025, at the age of 73 years.

A resident of Sherbrooke, Carl enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 1970 and served with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Combat Engineer and Heavy Equipment Operator for over 34 years. He served primarily in 5e Regiment de Genie de Combat in Valcartier QC and at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC.  Carl was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. 

A viewing was held at the Coopérative funéraire de l’Estrie (485 Rue du 24 Juin, Sherbrooke) on 16 August 2025 to receive condolences and for family and friends to pay their respects. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

Capt Roy James Kuta Sr., CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Roy James Kuta Sr., CD (Ret’d), peacefully on 18 July 2025, in Orleans ON at the age of 85 years.

Roy was born in Glace Bay NS, the fourth of eight children. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1958 and served a 38-year career as a Construction Engineer. Roy found his calling as an Electrician and eventually became skilled across a wide range of construction trades. Rising through the ranks to Chief Warrant Officer, he later accepted a commission and served with the Base Construction Engineering Section at Gander NL (1989-92)

Known for his integrity, quiet humour, and firm but fair leadership, Roy earned the nickname “BaraKuta” on construction sites. His career allowed Roy to travel to all three coasts of Canada, as well as to every province in between. He also deployed to Asia and the Middle East. Roy spoke often of the memorable month-long trip he and his wife took to Israel and Syria while he was posted to the UN Peacekeeping Forces in the Golan Heights. 

Roy was a builder at heart. In his private life, he constructed four family homes during various military postings, as well as numerous renovations and projects for family and friends over the years.  Near the end of his military service, Roy embarked on a new adventure, opening the Cape Cod Inn Bed and Breakfast in Gander NL with his wife. They built this into a successful business that was one of the first B&Bs in the province to receive a four-star rating as well as recognition from Hospitality Newfoundland & Labrador. In 1998, they sold the inn and moved to Mississauga, ON to be closer to their children.

MCpl William Elmer “Bill” Cole, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Master Corporal William Elmer “Bill” Cole, CD (Ret’d), a resident of  Casa Loma in Comox BC on 16 July 2025 at age 80.

Bill was was born in London ON and served a career as a Firefighter with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in Canadian Forces Base Borden and in Lahr Germany but put down roots in the Comox Valley when he returned to Canada.

Bill retired from the Canadian Forces around 1986 and worked for Superior Propane for a while before trading the propane truck for a school bus and drove that for many enjoyable years. Bill and his wife spent their retirement enjoying curling, camping, travelling in their motorhome and going on cruises. Declining health resulted in his moving into Casa Loma in 2022.

Maj William David Herd “Bill” Murphy, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major William David Herd “Bill” Murphy, CD (Ret’d), peacefully on 13 July 2025 in Burlington ON, in his 84th year.

A native of Toronto, Bill kept busy in his youth by selling newspapers on the streets of Toronto. During his high school years, running the lighting committee was a source of pride for him. At 18, in need of summer employment,  Bill joined 2nd Field Engineer Regiment in Toronto (now 32 Combat Engineer Regiment) in 1959 through the Student Militia Training Plan. He subsequently instructed on this program for three years and this was the start of a 37-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers.   

Bill attended the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, where he qualified as a Field Engineer as well as completing the Regular Force course in Mine Warfare. He filled a variety of positions in 2 FER. He was the Squadron Sergeant Major of 47 Field Squadron and was then responsible for the Field Engineering Trades Courses and Mobile Command Training. Bill served as Unit Training Warrant Officer and Regimental Quarter Master Sergeant before being promoted to Chief Warrant Officer in 1971 and being appointed Regimental Sergeant Major.

Bill was commissioned from the ranks in 1974 and served at Toronto District Headquarters (now 32 Canadian Brigade Group) in the Comptroller's Office before rejoining the Regiment.  As a regimental officer, his appointments included Unit Training Officer, Adjutant, Officer Commanding 47 Field Engineer Squadron, and Deputy Commanding Officer.  Bill subsequently served in the Militia Officer Training School of Central Area Command (now 4th Canadian Division) from which he retired in 1991 with the rank of Major.  

In his civilian life, Bill took a lot of pleasure from his various careers, enjoying the challenges along the way. Working for Cara Foods was one of Bill’s career highlights, where he streamlined the food supply operations for airlines' in-flight food service. His final post was with the Ontario Ministry of Health, procuring the ambulance fleet. 

Funeral arrangements were private. A Celebration of life will be held in late summer. 

Sgt Stephen Drebit, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Sergeant Stephen Drebit, CD (Ret’d), peacefully at the North Bay Regional Health Centre on 6 July 2024 at the age of 85 years. 

Steve’s service with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Military Engineers included postings to Canadian Forces Station Falconbridge ON, CFS Alert NU, Canadian Forces Base Lahr in Germany, CFB Trenton ON and CFB North Bay, from where he retired.

A celebration of life for Stephen will be held at a later date in Teulon MB. Donations to the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation - Cardiac Care Unit will be gratefully acknowledged by the family. Online Condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

 

CPO2 Dennis Shaw, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Petty Officer 2 Dennis Shaw, CD (Ret’d) in Victoria on 3 July 2025.

Denny started his military career as a Combat Engineer but ended as a Navy Clearance Diver. He qualified as a Combat Diver on Course 7102 when he was in 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack BC. Posted to 4 Field Squadron in Lahr Germany in 1972, he was a member of the Unit Diving Section.

In 1973 Denny was the first Combat Diver to remuster to Clearance Diver with the Canadian Navy. He had a good career in his new trade and rose to the rank of CPO2. After retiring from the Regular Force, Denny joined the Naval Reserves and was employed with the Manta program, a trial involving a remotely operated underwater vehicle.  When that project was terminated, Denny established his own home security business, installing alarms. After that successful venture, he went into full retirement in Victoria.

WO Daniel Weatherbee, CD ( Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Daniel Roy Weatherbee, CD ( Ret'd), of Medicine Hat AB, quietly in his sleep on 1 July 2025, at the age of 69 years.

Dan was born and raised in Springhill, NS. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force with the Canadian Military Engineers for 23 years as a Refrigeration and Mechanical Technician. Dan retired from the Canadian Forces in 1997 and subsequently worked as Contracts Inspector at Canadian Forces Base Suffield (1997- 2010).

A Celebration of Life was held on 8 July 2025, at the Medicine Hat Legion. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

 

Cpl Gregory Purcell, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Gregory Purcell, CD (Ret'd) of Quinte West on 1 July 2025 at the age of 59 years. 

Greg started his military career as a Combat Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers. He deployed many times during his Combat Engineer career, to locations that included Bosnia, Kosovo, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan. Greg remustered to Mobile Support Equipment Operator for the final phase of his service and retired from 8 Wing, Canadian Forces Base Trenton, after 25 years of service.

A Celebration of Greg's Life will be held at a future date. If desired, donations to Wounded Warriors Canada or Vets Canada would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

 

Sgt Robert “Bob” Ladouceur, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of  Sergeant Robert “Bob” Ladouceur, CD (Ret’d)  at the Kelowna Hospice on 30 June 2025 at age 67 years after a three-year fight with cancer.

Bob joined the Canadian Forces in 1977. Upon completing his recruit training, he took his Basic Combat Engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, BC. Bob’s first posting was to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa where he served in 2 Troop and in Regimental Headquarters.  After Petawawa, Bob was  posted to 4 CER in Lahr, Germany (1984-87). 

Bob returned to Canada with a posting to 5e Régiment du Génie de Combat in Valcartier QC (1987-90).  After Valcartier, he was posted to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Gagetown, where he instructed in the Roads, Airfields, Water Supply and Accommodation Troop and in Mine Warfare and Demolitions. 

Bob retired from the Canadian Forces in 1998 and worked with his brother Gilles for many years in the construction field in British Columbia.

Funeral arrangements were private.

CWO James Leighton Munro MMM, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer James Leighton Munro MMM, CD (Ret’d) after a short illness, on 23 June 2025, a day before his 81st birthday.

Born in Vancouver BC, Jim was the eldest of ten children. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1962 and served as a military firefighter in the Canadian Armed Forces for over 35 years. Among his many postings were RCAF Station Zweibrücken in Germany, Canadian Forces Bases in Downsview ON, Portage La Prairie MB, and Greenwood, NS. Jim was also posted to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa as a Firefighting Equipment Manager and as a  Career Manager.

A longtime member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal parish and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 12401 in Russell ON, Jim gave his time freely in service to both his church and community. Jim was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 372, in Russell ON.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, 3 July 2025 from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the Hall of Colours at Beechwood Cemetery {280 Beechwood Ave, Ottawa, Ontario }. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, 4 July at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, in Russell ON, with a reception taking place afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.

 

Sgt Randy Dennis Gall, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Randy Dennis Gall, CD (Ret’d) of Fort Saskatchewan AB, unexpectedly on 22 June 2025, at the age of 58.

Randy was born in Golden BC and spent his early years there. After completing high school, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1987 and served as a Combat Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers for 17 years. In addition to his Canadian postings, Randy deployed on the UN Iraq-Kuwait Observer Mission and the UN Protection Force-Yugoslavia.

Randy retired from the Canadian Forces with the rank of Sergeant and then worked with the Edmonton Police Service as an intake clerk for over 10 years.

Maj Jerry M. Schock, CD, PEng, MPI (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Jerry M. Schock, CD, PEng, MPI (Ret’d) at the Perley Veteran Health Care Centre in Ottawa on 18 June 2025 at the age of 69 years.

Born in Arvida QC, Jerry dedicated more than 32 years to the Canadian Armed Forces, serving as a Military Engineer, Airfield Engineer, and Construction Engineer with the Canadian Military Engineers. Jerry also completed a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Queens University.

During his career, Jerry served the Air Force, Army and Navy. His postings included Canadian Forces Bases Rockcliffe,  Chilliwack, Kingston, and Ottawa, Canadian Forces Station Alsask SK, and in Germany for eight years. Among his assignments in Germany, Jerry was the Officer Commanding the Airfield Damage Repair Squadron in Lahr and the Detachment Commander for the closure of CFBs Lahr and Baden.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors on Monday, 7 July 2025, from 1 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Beechwood {280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa}. Interment of ashes will follow at 3 p.m. at Beechwood Cemetery.

MWO Carl Marsh, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Coral Sylvester “Carl” Marsh, CD (Ret’d), suddenly on 16 June 2025 at Chilliwack General Hospital at the age of 85 years.

Carl was born in Glace Bay, Cape Breton NS, the third-oldest of 13 children. He enlisted in the Canadian Forces in Sydney NS in 1958 and proudly served over 25 years as a Combat Engineer with the Royal Canadian Engineers. During his career, he served at Canadian Forces Base Gagetown (1959-1960), CFB Chilliwack (1961-1963), CFB Werl, Germany (1964-1967), CFB Chilliwack (1967-1972), CFB Lahr, Germany (1973-1977), and CFB Chilliwack (1977-1982). Carl also deployed on United Nations peacekeeping missions in Rafah Egypt (1960-1961), and Nicosia Cyprus (1972).

After retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces, Carl worked for the Langley School District from 1982 to 1989. During this period, he received a Certificate of Registration as a Certified Technician with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC. Carl was then recalled into the CF to serve with Range Control at CFB Chilliwack as “Class C” from 1989 to 1991. He next worked at the University College of the Fraser Valley in Chilliwack from 1991 to 2002 and fully retired in 2002. Carl was a member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 295 in Chilliwack

Carl’s life was full and adventurous. He loved sports, coaching and participating in many, with hockey being his passion. He was an exceptional hockey player and played for the 1968 3 Field Squadron team, which won the first-ever Canadian Armed Forces Hockey Championship held in Ottawa. Scoring the winning goal in the final game was one of his proudest moments. Another highlight for him was when his team was inducted into the Chilliwack Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

There will be no funeral or memorial as per his wishes. A small family gathering was held on 25 June 2025.

 

Capt David Archibald Geddes, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain David Archibald Geddes, CD (Ret'd) of Kingston NS, on 14 June 2025  at age 83, peacefully at home after a lengthy battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born in Halifax, NS, David dedicated 30 years to the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Military Engineers. He began his career as a military Firefighter. David's career included three tours in Germany, where he was instrumental in fostering friendships between Canadian and German firefighters. David was Commissioned from the ranks in 1980. and was the Canadian Forces Europe Fire Marshal 1984-87.

David retired from the Canadian Forces in 1989 at the rank of Captain. Following his retirement, he served 12 years as a civilian Fire Chief with the Department of National Defence Fire Service at Canadian Forces Base Halifax NS. David remained committed to his community and served as President of Legion Branch No. 98  for eight years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home. Donations in David's memory may be made to the Lung Association of Nova Scotia or the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 98 – Poppy Fund. 

FR Joseph Dennis Wayne Laverdure (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter FR Joseph Dennis Wayne Laverdure (Ret’d) on 10 June 2025 in Kingston ON, at the age of 80 years. 

Wayne served with the Department of National Defence Fire Service at Canadian Forces Base Kingston for many years.

A memorial tree will be planted in his memory in Kingston and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

LCol David Andrew Noble OMM, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Colonel David Andrew Noble OMM, CD (Ret’d), who passed away peacefully at the General Hospital on 7 June 2025 in Ottawa ON at the age of 77 years.

Born in London, UK, Dave began his journey of service at age 17 when he joined the Canadian Armed Forces with the Regular Officer Training Plan. Dave served for 27 years as a Military Engineer Officer. 

Dave earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of British Columbia in 1969 and went on to build a distinguished military career. His postings took him across Canada and around the world - from Chilliwack to Brussels, from Rome to Petawawa. His career highlights included a tour in Cyprus in 1972 with  Lord Strathcona Horse as Pioneer Platoon Commander, Exchange Officer with the Royal School of Military Engineering in UK, Engineer Doctrine lead at Force Mobile Command Headquarters, attending NATO Defence College, Commanding Officer of 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa, Executive Assistant to the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff and Divisional Engineer at Land Forces Western Area.

Dave often said the most rewarding time of his career was serving as Commanding Officer of 2 CER in Petawawa. He was awarded the Order of Military Merit in 1991 in recognition of his outstanding leadership and dedication to the military.

After retiring from the Canadian Forces, Dave transitioned into public service. As Director of Disaster Services for the Government of Alberta, he led the province’s Y2K preparedness strategy, coordinating over 1,500 organizations and earning the Premier’s Award of Excellence. He later helped shape Canada’s Federal Emergency Response Plan and the National Emergency Response System. 

Dave had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a generous spirit for sharing it. This was matched by incredible athleticism. Sports were central to Dave’s life as he believed athletics built perseverance, resilience and teamwork. He spent countless hours in hockey arenas and on soccer pitches coaching children of all skill levels. 

Dave was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in March 2019 and faced the illness with the same courage, focus, and perseverance that defined his life. In May 2025, he received a diagnosis of untreatable colon cancer, which he met with the same quiet strength.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA in his memory. 

A Celebration of the Life of David Andrew Noble was held on Saturday, 30 August 2025, 1300 – 1600 at Cole Funeral Home, Magee Sideroad in Carp ON.

Note: Dave will be buried alongside his parents in Victoria BC on 11 October 2025, followed by a Celebration of Life from 1300 until 1600 hours at the Cedar Hill Golf Club, 1400 Derby Road, Victoria. The celebration will include an opportunity for Dave's family and friends to say a few words or tell a story or two they would like to share with guests.  Remarks can be brief or more detailed – everyone is encouraged to take part. Dress Code: Business casual. Maroon berets and medals are welcome.

CWO Glen Simpkin, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Glen Simpkin, CD (Ret’d), on 4 June 2025 at the General Hospital in Ottawa ON, at age 60. Glen was a former Canadian Military Engineer Chief Warrant Officer (2017-20).
Glen joined the Canadian Forces as an Artilleryman in 1982. While posted to the Artillery School in Gagetown, NB, he applied for a remuster to Topographic Surveyor in January 1994. After completing his basic Geomatics Technician training at the Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa, Glen took part in several Arctic survey missions. He attended the Advanced Topographic Analysis Course at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, in 1999. During this MCE posting, Glen also deployed on three tours in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1996, 1998, and 2000).  Domestically, Glenn deployed to the Winnipeg floods in 1997 and was the first to use radar to depict floodwater movements. He also completed several Arctic gravity survey missions,
In 2002, Glen was posted to the Joint Headquarters in Kingston ON. During this two-year tour, he deployed twice to Afghanistan (2003 and 2004) and to Haiti. Glen was posted back to MCE as an instructor in the School of Military Mapping. In 2005, after a year-long French Language course, Glen held various positions at MCE before being posted to Naples, Italy with his family. While in Naples, he worked on multiple missions, deployed to Iraq for the NATO Training Mission and was heavily involved in Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR for Libya.
Glen returned to MCE in 2012, where he served as the Geomatics Support Squadron Sergeant Major, Operations Master Warrant Officer, and School Chief Warrant Officer before being appointed MCE Regimental Sergeant Major in 2016.
CWO Simpkin was appointed the sixteenth Canadian Military Engineering Branch Chief Warrant Officer in 2017 and served in that capacity until 2020. One of the highlights of that appointment was the opportunity to meet and have an audience with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace on 27 June 2018, along with Colonel Commandant.
Retiring from the Canadian Forces in 2021, Glen took on the Services Coordinator position with the Canadian Forces National Capital Region Transition Unit.

Maj Samantha Burch, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Samantha Ann Burch, CD (Ret’d), peacefully at home on 25 May 2025 at age 37, after a courageous battle with cancer. Samantha most recently served as Deputy Commanding Officer of 38 Combat Engineer Regiment in Winnipeg MB.

As a child, Sam was very competitive in sports and excelled academically. She loved basketball and played throughout junior high and high school, continuing on to coach teams after she graduated. After graduating J.H. Bruns High School in 2006, Sam went on to complete her Bachelor of Science at the University of Manitoba.  Pursuing her passion for teaching, she earned her Bachelor of Education in 2013. Sam’s career as a high school math and science teacher took her to Pinawa Secondary School, St John’s Ravenscourt, and Lord Selkirk Regional Comprehensive School. A gifted athlete, as an adult, she enjoyed several years playing on the Saracens Rugby Team, and later joined a recreational hockey league.

Sam enrolled in 2004 into the Canadian Armed Forces as a Trooper with the Fort Garry Horse. She attended Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering for her Basic Combat Engineer training, completing that training over the following summers. After serving the unit as a Non-Commissioned Member for a number of years, Sam was Commissioned from the Ranks in 2010 and completed her Basic Engineer Officer Course in 2012.

Sam served in 38 Canadian Brigade Group for over 19 years, and visited almost every province in Canada. She was promoted to the rank of Major in 2016 and became the Regiment's Deputy Commanding Officer.  Balancing her career as a teacher alongside her service as a reservist, Sam was always actively involved with the Regiment. Sam was medically released in April 2024.

Any anecdotes for Sam's family may be sent to Major Meg Belyea. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, 14 June 2025 at 11:00 am at McGregor Armoury { 551 Machray Ave, Winnipeg}. In recognition of Sam’s approach to life, please wear your brightest colours and fanciest hats!  The service will be livestreamed. 

Samantha was an advocate for infertility awareness and also hoped that eligible blood donors might give in her memory. In lieu of cards or flowers, please consider donating to the Major Samantha Burch Memorial Scholarship fund which will generate an annual post-secondary education scholarship for members 38 Combat Engineer Regiment. MWO Garrett Charles Joseph Powers, CD

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Garrett Charles Joseph Powers, CD (Ret’d) on 16 May 2025 at Dartmouth General Hospital at age 42 after a long battle with cancer,

Born in Oakville ON, Garrett attended Queen Elizabeth Park High School. Pursuing further education at Humber College gave him the essential skills for a firefighting career.

Garrett enlisted in the Canadian Forces in 2002. He had a long and distinguished career of  almost 23 years with the Canadian Military Engineers as a Firefighter in the Air Force and the Navy. His postings included Canadian Forces Bases Greenwood NS, Winnipeg MB, Cold Lake AB and 8 Wing Trenton ON. His last posting to Shearwater was to bring his family home to Nova Scotia.  

A notable career highlight was his Garrett's contribution to the rescue of three people during Operation NANOOK in Resolute Bay NU in 2011. After a cancer diagnosis and subsequent arm amputation, Garrett used athletics as a positive focus during his rehabilitation.  Garrett competed in both the Invictus and Warrior Games and earned several medals throughout his events. He was co-captain of the Warrior Games team.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Sea King Club in Shearwater on Saturday, 24 May 2025 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Valour Place Society - a military family and veteran support house in Edmonton AB that housed Garrett and his family through multiple surgeries and treatments. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
 

Sgt Wayne Sarson, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Wayne Sarson, CD (Ret'd), on 3 May 2025 at Bluewater Health in Sarnia ON, at the age of 77.

Born in New Liskeard ON, Wayne served with the Army Cadets and Militia before enrolling in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (RCASC) Apprentice Training Program in 1964. He qualified as a Transportation Operator and Mobile Support Equipment Operator and served in Germany (1966-71) for his first posting, where he qualified as a Parachutist.

Wayne remustered to the Topographical Surveyor trade and joined Mapping and Charting Establishment in 1972. He served the remainder of his military career with the unit, including a deployment on Operation Arctic in 1984. Wayne retired from the Canadian Forces in 1985  and moved to Sarnia, where he became a salesman for Molson Brewery.
