Adjuc Christopher Bradley LaSalle, CD (Ret)

Maj Timothy Grant “Tim” Whiting, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Timothy “Tim” Grant Whiting, CD (Ret’d) on 1 November 2022, in Calgary AB at the Peter Lougheed Centre, at age 63 after a battle with lymphoma.

A native of Calgary, Tim enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in the Navy as a Maritime Surface Officer (MARS) but, after a summer of phase training in Victoria, he quickly discovered that it would be impossible to use a Civil Engineering degree as a Deck Officer. Tim was able to reclassify to the Military Engineering occupation and graduated from the Royal Military College in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Tim was to serve 35 years as a Military Engineer Officer.

Tim's postings over more than 28 years of service in the Regular Force started with being the Requirements Officer at Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie. This was followed by a tour with the Canadian Forces Officer Candidate School in Chilliwack BC as Platoon and Standards staff. He then joined the Directorate of Construction Engineer Requirements in Ottawa at National Defence Headquarters as a Statement of Requirements writer. Following this NDHQ tour, Tim moved to 17 Wing Winnipeg as the Engineering Officer after which he had a tour with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the  Golan Heights as the Force Construction Engineering Officer. Returning to Canada, Tim became the Wing Construction Engineering Officer at 15 Wing Moose Jaw.

Following Moose Jaw, Tim returned to NDHQ with the J3 Engineer section as an Engineer Operations Desk Officer, Project Director for Force Protection Engineering, and with the Canadian Forces Transformation Team. Tim then transferred to the Primary Reserve and worked with the Counter-Improvised Explosive Devices Task Force in Ottawa, principally as the doctrine writer for EOD and C-IED, and as the Coordinator for the Task Force. He worked remotely from Calgary for the last three years of this Class B contract and finally retired from the Canadian Forces in 2013.

Cremation has occurred and his ashes were interred alongside his mother in Calgary. At Tim’s request, there will not be any memorial service. He asked that others should consider contributing in his memory to a charity of their choice.
