We regret to advise of the death of Alfred Henry Robert “Bob” Diplock at home in Nanaimo BC on 29 October 2002 at the age of 80 years.

Bob was born in Camping, MB and moved with his family to Nanaimo when he was six. He joined the army in 1942 and was a veteran on the Second World War. He served as a radio operator in the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 1^st Division seeing action in Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe.

After the war, Bob was a well-known and respected masonry contractor. He did business as Diplock Concrete in Nanaimo for many years and retired in 1983. As a highly respected member of the community and a lover of all sports, Bob coached and sponsored juvenile soccer and umpired numerous local softball teams for many years.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #10 in Nanaimo.

There will be no service by request. Donations in Bob's name may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice. ^{{dcFeb18gd} [zsd, zbd, zpp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal John James Griffin, CD (Ret’d) at the Chilliwack General Hospital on 25 October 2002 at the age of 70 years.

John was born in St John’s NL. After a long career in the Royal Canadian Engineers as a heavy equipment operator, John will be remembered as the cheery bus driver between Vedder and Chilliwack. John was also a supporter of the Retired Sappers, the RCE Association and the Chilliwack Legion. 

Cremation has taken place and a service will be held in Newfoundland at a later date. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be gratefully appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise of the death of Ephraim “Eph” Schelske of Bassano, AB peacefully on 19 October 2002 at the age of 88 years.

Eph was born in Medicine Hat, AB and moved to Bassano at an early age.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war Elf returned to Bassano where he operated Schelske's Welding Shop until his retirement.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #141 in Bassano for over fifty years. He was also an active member of many community organisations including the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners.

Funeral Services will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Bassano on 25 October at 2:00 PM with interment to follow at Bassano Cemetery. Donations may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children, Box 1201, Medicine Hat or the Bassano and District Health Foundation - Palliative Care Fund, Box 120, Bassano. 

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Clifford Percy Appleton (Ret’d) of Parksville, BC on 8 October 2002 at the age of 79 years.

Cliff was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Seaview Centennial Branch # 257 in Lantzville, BC.

A funeral service will be held on 11 October at 11:00 AM at St. Edmund’s Anglican Church 407 Wembley Road in Parksville with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Edward “Eddie” Smith (Ret’d) of Carroll’s Crossing, NB on 1 October 2002 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB.

Born in Liverpool, NS, Eddie served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Mariebeth Short, a member of 2 Combat Engineer Regiment, on 23 September 2002 as a result of a training accident involving a light armoured vehicle in which she was riding.

Mariebeth was born in Comox, BC daughter of a military family and was 22 years of age. She enrolled in the Canadian Forces in January 2000 and completed her basic training at Canadian Forces Base St Jean, QC in March of that year. She completed her Field Engineer Qualification Level 3 training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack, BC and her first posting was to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa, ON in April 2001.

Visitation will be at the Weaver Family Funeral Home, West Chapel, 170 Dundas Street, Trenton, ON on 26 and 27 September. A full military funeral service will be held in the King Street United Church, King Street, Trenton, on Friday, September 27, 2002. Interment to follow at the Mount Evergreen Cemetery, Trenton, ON. We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Robert “Bob” Brennan Dawson, CD (Ret’d) peacefully at the Campbell River, BC Hospital on 22 September 2002 at the age of 74.

Bob was born in Leger Corner, NB. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and had a long career serving in Korea, Egypt, Chilliwack, BC, and Gagetown, NB. He was a heavy equipment operator. Following his retirement as a Warrant Officer, Bob worked in Boston, Massachusetts and Phoenix, Arizona as a crane operator. He retired in Calgary, Alberta, where he owned and operated a driving school for several years. In 1997, Bob made Campbell River his home.

Bob was Past President of both the Korea Veteran's Association (KVA) and the Royal Canadian Legion in Calgary, AB; a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #137 Cranbrook BC; and a member of The Fraternal Order of Eagles Branch #3097 in Campbell River.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on 27 September at The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch# 137, Campbell River, 301 - 11th Avenue. Donations may be made to the Campbell River Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation. ^{{gdJan2017dc} [zpp, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Tony Lay, in Chilliwack on 21 September 2002 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Tony joined the Royal Engineers in 1939 and served during the Second World War in France, Italy and North Africa. Notable activities during the war and immediately after included repair of a train tunnel in Italy, building a road from Baghdad to the Russian border to assist refugees leaving Russia, and clearing rubble from a volcanic mountain on the East coast of Sicily. Tony returned to England in the late '40s and was demobilized - later joining the Reserves and then the Territorial Army. He transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Field Engineer in 1954 and served in Chilliwack, Regina, Egypt, Vernon and North Vancouver. He was Acting Company Sergeant Major of the Canadian Works Company with the United Nations Emergency Force in Egypt 1962/ 63.

In retirement, Tony was instrumental in starting the Retired Sappers Reunions and was also an active participant in the Chilliwack Retired Sappers. His contributions to support the RCE and CME families will be remembered. A memorial service was held on 10 October 2002. 

We regret to advise of the death of Colonel Malcolm Turner, CD (Ret'd) on 16 September 2002 at the age of 82, in Fishermen's Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg,NS after a formidable battle with cancer.

Malcolm Turner joined 1^st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers (RCE) in 1937 and entered Royal Military College in Kingston later that year. He remained at RMC until December 1939 when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. The next spring he was commissioned in the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers in April 1940, Colonel Turner served in Halifax and Petawawa before proceeding overseas. He served in Britain with the 1^st and 2^nd Canadian Divisional Engineers and with the Royal Engineers of the British First Army in North Africa. In late 1943 Colonel Turner was appointed Second-in-Command of 8^th Field Squadron, RCE. He landed in France in Summer 1944 and was Commanding Officer of 8^th Field Squadron at the end of the war, having served with the unit through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.

After the war  Colonel Turner completed his university education at Queen's University, Kingston and graduated in 1947 with a degree in civil engineering. He then served for five years in Construction Engineering in Halifax and Fredericton, including a two year appointment as Area Engineer. He next commanded 57^th Independent Field Squadron (1952- 1953) and, after completing Staff College in England, was appointed Second-in-Command of 1^st Field Engineer Regiment. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, Malcolm was then appointed Area Engineer, British Columbia. He was next a member of the Directing Staff of the Canadian Army Staff College (1959 - 1963). In 1963, he was appointed Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff (Logistics) on the staff of Headquarters Northern Army Group in Germany. In 1965 he was promoted to colonel and appointed Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Command in Halifax for a year before becoming Commander, Nova Scotia District in 1966. In 1967 he was appointed Commander Atlantic Area and held that appointment until his retirement in September 1969.

Following retirement, Colonel Turner held a number of positions in the private and government sectors including Manager of Administration at Sydney Steel Corporation and Regional Director, Emergency Planning Canada in New Brunswick. Malcolm  gave very generously of his time and talents to many organizations: he was President of the Military Engineers Association of Canada, President of New Brunswick Army Cadet League, Vice President of Nova Scotia Army Cadet League, was a member of Canadian Military Colleges Advisory Board, Chairman of Cape Breton Branch of the Navy League of Canada, Vice President of Fredericton and Area United Services Institute, Chairman and member of Board of Governors Nova Scotia Division Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, a member of National Executive Canadian Corps of Commissionaires, Executive Branch 44, a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Honorary Lieutenant Colonel No. 6 Medical Company Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, Assistant District Commissioner of Boy Scouts, Vancouver, Vice Chairman of Halifax Citadel Foundation, Governor Army Museum Halifax Citadel, and Honorary Member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Trades. He held memberships the Royal Military College Club, Royal United Services Institute of Nova Scotia, Institution of Royal Engineers, and was a Life Member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia. In addition to having been awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration, Colonel Turner was the recipient of the Commissionaire Distinguished Service Medal as well as the Commemorative Medals for both Canada's Centennial and for the 125^th  Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.

We regret to advise of the death of John Alex Borland at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Barrie, ON on 14 September 2002 in his 88^th year.

John served with the Royal Canadian Engineers Mappers and Surveyors in WW II.

We regret to advise of the death of Lance-Sergeant Kenneth Norman Henderson, MM (Ret’d) on 12 September 2002 in Niagara Falls ON at the age of 84 years.

Kenneth was born in Welland ON and spent most of his life in southern Ontario.  He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. 

Kenneth served in the Italian Campaign with the 4^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. He was awarded the Military Medal during the Gothic Line Battle.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Niagara Falls.  Kenneth is buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Niagara Falls.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Walter “Wally” Alexander Hair at the Foothills Medical Centre, Calgary AB on 11 September 2002 at the age of 83.

Wally was born in Wigston Magna, Leicester, England but immigrated to Canada at a young age.  He was raised in Woodstock ON and was a WW II veteran who served overseas with the 7^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was captured and made a Prisoner of War in the Dieppe Raid.  After the war, Wally lived in Chilliwack BC before moving to Edmonton and eventually to Calgary where he worked for the Southern Albert Institute of Technology until his retirement in 1983.  He was active in the Masonic Order, Order of the Eastern Star and the Al Azhar Shrine Temple.

We regret to advise the death of Master Warrant Officer George Leonard Prosser, CD (Ret’d) at the Kingston General Hospital, Kingston ON, on 7 September 2002.

George was a Field Engineer with a long service in the Royal Canadian Engineers and Canadian Military Engineers. He served primarily in the Field Squadrons and Combat Engineer Regiments. George was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 496 in Sydenham, ON.

Visitations will take place at the Robert J. Reid and Sons Funeral Home, 309 Johnson Street, Kingston on 11 and 12 September. A Royal Canadian Legion Service will take place in Sydenham and members are invited to attend. The funeral service will take place on 12 September in “The Chapel on the Corner” of Reid’s Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston. We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Keith Brewster Hathaway (Ret’d) on 6 September 2002 at the age of 75.

Keith was born in Ottawa ON.  He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1947 becoming a map draftsman in the Army Survey Establishment.  After his retirement from the army in 1972, he served in the Corps of Commissionaires. 

A memorial service will be held with Legionaries and friends on 13 September at St. Margaret’s Anglican Church, 206 Montreal Road, Vanier, ON.  Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society and Diabetes Foundation would be appreciated. ^{{gdDec2015kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Lance-Corporal Warden James Pinnell (Ret’d) of Sault Ste-Marie, ON at the age of 81 years on 4 September 2002. 

Warden was born in Echo Bay, ON. He was a veteran of the Second World War serving with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Northwest European Theatre. He was discharged in September 1945 and settled in Sault-Ste Marie.

Friends may call at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on 7 September from 1:00 PM until the funeral service in the chapel at 3:00 PM.  Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery.  Memorial donations to the Gideons or the Sault Area Hospital Cancer Clinic would be appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Donald Alexander Dempster (Ret’d) at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg MB on 2 September 2002 at the age of 82 years.

Don was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the Winnipeg Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

We regret to advise of the death of Ronald Clarence Dillman, unexpectedly, on 31 August 2002 in Tantallon, NS at the age of 77 years.

Ronald was born in Dartmouth, NS.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. After the war, Ron returned to work as a blacksmith in the Halifax Shipyards and finished his career in the Halifax Dockyards.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Gervase Bernard Dick (Ret’d) on 27 August 2002 of Kitchener ON at the age of 74 years.

Gervase was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Fred Geis Branch #50 in Kitchener.

We regret to advise of the death of Major Dewey Douglas Roy, CD (Ret’d) on 23 August 2002, peacefully, at home.

Born in Milltown, NB in 1930, Dewey is a graduate of the University of New Brunswick. He worked for two years as a surveyor and construction inspector for the Tobique Narrows Power Project in Andover NB prior to joining the Canadian Forces.

Dewey joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in 1959 as a Construction Engineer and served in the RCAF for eighteen years. His postings started with two years as the Engineering Officer in the Station Construction Engineering Section at RCAF Station Namao in Edmonton AB. He was then transferred to Air Force Headquarters in Ottawa for three years with the Directorate of Construction Engineering Maintenance Ottawa. Dewey was then posted to the Base Construction Engineering Section in Winnipeg MB for three years as the Engineering Officer and Second-in-Command. This was followed by a three year posting to Canadian Forces Station LaMacaza, QC as the Station Construction Engineering Officer.

After Dewey’s retirement from the Canadian Forces in 1977 he worked for the Department of External Affairs as the manager of building maintenance of real properties abroad. This was followed by employment with the Department of Transport Canada where he worked on airports and runways.

Friends may visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvy Road at Aviation Parkway, on Monday, 26 August from 2-4:00 pm and 7-9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the Chapel on Tuesday, 27 August at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Beechwood Cemetery. In Memoriam donations to Saint Vincent Hospital or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario would be appreciated.

We regret to advise of the death of Edmond Yablonski of Mayview Sk on 23 August 2002 at the age of 83 years. 

Edmond was born in Poland and immigrated to Saskatchewan with his family in 1929. In 1939, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and served across Western and Eastern Canada as a heavy machine operator, ending up attached to the Military Police in Halifax as a jail guard. Two weeks later, the war ended, and he returned to farm in Saskatchewan. In 1949, he married Julia, and they raised a family of two daughters and one son. He was a long time member of the Shellbrook Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Shellbrook SK.

Edmond is buried near his lifelong home in Mayview Cemetery.

Joseph was born in Plamonden, AB.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.

We regret to advise of the death of Cadet Warrant Office Laura Katherine Kopan in a motor vehicle accident in Ft. Langley, BC on 7 August 2002 at the age of 17 years.

Laura was a member of 1725 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps (RCE) and the daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel Terry Kopan, Commanding Officer, Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre Cadet Camp and a former Commanding Officer of 1725 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps.

A Celebration of Laura's Life will be held on 12 August 2002 in Abbotsford, BC and Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre Cadet Camp will honour Laura during their Drum Head Ceremony. We regret to advise of the sudden death of Sergeant Guy Levesque (Ret'd) Field Engineer on 5 August 2002, at his home in Sprucewoods, MB, a small village located on the outskirts of CFB Shilo.

Guy served a full career as a Field Engineer in in many Regiments and Units of the Canadian Military Engineers and will be remembered by many.

Donations in memory of Guy should be sent to your local Heart and Stroke Foundation.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Laurie Ross Matthews (Ret'd) in Truro, NS on Saturday, 3 August 2002 at the age of 82.

Laurie was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War who served with the 6^th Field Company RCE overseas from 1941 to 1945. After returning home from the war, he graduated in carpentry from the Veterans Training Centre in Windsor, NS in 1947 and then served as a civil servant for 29 years with the Department of Defence in Debert - retiring in 1976.

Memorial donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses or The Salvation Army.

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Robert S. Chamberlain MC, C St J, CD on 3 August 2002 at the St. Thomas - Elgin General Hospital in his 82^nd year. LCol Chamberlain was the Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Elgin Regiment for 15 years. This unit has been re-roled as 31 Combat Engineer Regiment (The Elgins).

Bob joined the Perth Regiment and served with distinction overseas during the Second World War. At age 22, he was the youngest major in the Canadian Army. He was decorated with the Military Cross on 7 January 1944 for in Italy"

"During the day and evening this officer and the handful of men under his command doggedly repelled determined attempts to dislodge them, inflicting casualties on the enemy. Shortly after midnight on 18 January 1944, having been unable to make contact the entire day, Lieutenant Chamberlain safely disengaged his section and led them back to rejoin the unit.
Throughout this action, Lieutenant Chamberlain led his men with the greatest courage and determination. He personally accounted for several of the enemy and under his inspiring leadership his men reached and held their objective under heavy odds."

After the war, Bob returned to private life in St. Thomas, Ontario. He also served the St. John Ambulance for over 20 years, attaining the rank of Commander of the Order of Saint John.

Remembrances may be made to the Elgin Military Museum or the St. Thomas - Elgin General Hospital Foundation (emergency department renovation chaired by Dr. Stanley Hagerman).

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Lindsay Walter "Len" Holden (Ret’d) on 6 August 2002 at his home in Fredericton, NB.

Born in 1925 in Halifax, Lindsay enlisted in the Regina Rifles in 1943 during the Second World War. Following the war, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and retired as a Warrant Officer.

The funeral mass for Lindsay will be held 10 a.m. 9 August in St. Francis of Assisi Church, Lincoln, N.B. and a funeral mass will also be held 12 noon Sunday, 11 August in St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Mabou, Cape Breton, with interment of Lindsay's ashes in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the donor's choice.

We regret to advise the death of Colonel Louis Mason Sebert (Retired) on 1 August 2002 at the age of 85.

After graduating from the University of Toronto in Engineering, Colonel Sebert served in WW II in England and Italy. Afterwards, he transferred to the Canadian Army Survey Establishment where he was instrumental in surveying the Canadian Arctic. Retiring from the Army in 1965, he joined the Survey and Mapping Branch of the Federal Department of Energy, Mines and Resources until his retirement in 1981.

A prominent figure in the Canadian mapping community, Lou Sebert co-founded the Canadian Cartographic Association and throughout his career was actively involved with the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Canadian Institute of Geomatics. Col Sebert was still active as a consultant in his field at the time of passing. A prolific writer, Lou Sebert published extensively on the subject of Canadian cartography. Among other works, he co-wrote "The Maps of Canada" (1981) and co-edited "Mapping A Northern Land" (1999). In 1995 Lou received the Camsell Award for outstanding service to the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and in 2001 he received the Award of Distinction for exceptional professional contributions to the practice of cartography from the Canadian Cartographic Association.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the CanadianDiabetic Association would be appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal George Austin Fillman on 31 July 2002 of Nepean, ON at the age of 87 years.

George was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Bells Corners Branch # 593 of the Royal Canadian Legion.

Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry on 4 August from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel on 5 August at 2:00 PM with a reception to follow. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Elmer L. Antler (Ret’d) on 26 July 2002 at the Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, ON in his 80^th year.

Elmer was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he went to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a locomotive engineer where he enjoyed a 40-year career. Elmer was very active in a number of community and service organisations, often in a leadership role.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23 in North Bay ON, a past President of the Rorab Shine Club in North Bay; member of Espanola Lodge of the Masons 527 GRC; past president Mac Tier Lions Club in MacTier, ON,  and registrar for the Harrington Preceptory in North Bay.

Elmer will be resting at the G.H. Hogle Funeral Home, 63 Mimico Avenue, Toronto on 29 July from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM and on 30 July from 2:00 to 4:00 PM.  Visitation will then take place in North Bay at the Martyn Funeral Home, 465 Wyld Street on 31 July from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM including a Masonic Memorial Service and on 1 August at 10:00 AM until time of service in the chapel at 1:00 PM.  Interment will be in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, North Bay. Sergeant Arnold "Arnie" Oliver Holte (Ret'd) on 23 July 2002 at the age of 81 years. Donations in Arnie's memory may be made to the B.C. Children's Hospital.

We regret to advise of the death of Malcolm Edward `Mac` Locke on 22 July 2002 in Taber, AB at the age of 83 years.

Mac was born in Central Butte, SK.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in the Italian and Northwest Europe Campaigns.  On returning to Canada Mac and his wife bought farmland in Hays, AB under the Veteran`s Land Act and farmed for many years.  Mac was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #193 in Vauxhall, AB where served for 56 years, including as terms as President, Past President, and Sports Chairman.   A highlight of his life was being able to travel back to Holland, where he renewed friendships with families he had met in World War II.

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Karl William Gooding (Ret’d) on 20 July 2002 in London ON at the age of 82 years.

Karl was born in Peel, ON and was a veteran of the Second World War. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers, the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and the Elgin Regiment during his service in the Canadian Army, Karl was a member of the Victory Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in London.

We regret to advise of the death of Darius Charles “Pete” Boisvert on 19 July 2002 at the Grey-Bruce Health Services in Southampton, ON at the age of 79 years.

Pete was a Second World War veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #340 Port Elgin, ON.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Wilfrid Lortie (Ret’d) of Gatineau QC on 15 July 2002 at the age of 84 years.
Wilfred was born and raised in Gatineau. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a Life Member of the Norris Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Gatineau.

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant J. Gerard "Gerry' O'Neil at the age of 83 in Dartmouth, NS on Saturday 13 July 2002.

Gerry was a member of the 1^st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers, and served overseas during the Second World War for nearly six years in England, France, Sicily, mainland Italy and Northwest Europe. Gerry O'Neil was a faithful member of the 1^st Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers Veterans Association and the Halifax Branch of the Military Engineers' Association of Canada.

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Brant John Bordewick Campioni (Ret'd), age 35, co-pilot of an airplane involved in a mid-air collision over Germany on 1 Jul 2002.

Brant grew up in North Vancouver and, as a teenager, he showed an early interest in flying when he joined Air Cadet Squadron 103 in North Vancouver. That unit shared the 6 Field Squadron armoury and Brant transferred to #2573 - 6 Field Engineer Squadron Royal Canadian Engineer Cadet Corps. He later joined 6 Field Engineer Squadron (1984-88) and then joined the Regular Force. Brant became a Firefighter and served in Cold Lake. Seeking new challenges, he took his release and trained as a commercial pilot in Abbotsford in the early 1990s. He initially flew for Air BC before leaving to work for DHL Express in Bahrain 1999.

We regret to advise of the death of Staff Sergeant Ernest William “Bill” Crews (Ret’d) in Calgary, AB on 1 July 2002 at the age of 79 years.

Bill was born in Medicine Hat, AB.  He served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and the Royal Canadian Engineers.  Bill was a machinist and worked for twenty years at the Defence Research Board in Suffield and later at the University of Calgary from where he retired.  He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion and Al Azhar Shriners.

We regret to advise of the death of  Lieutenant Peter Joseph “Joe” Birrette (Ret’d) of Lower L'Ardoise, NS on 28 June 2002 in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, NS at the age of 80 years.

Joe was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Europe.  After the war, he worked as an engineer on projects including the restoration of the Fortress of Louisbourg and the Alexander Graham Bell HD4 Hydrofoil. He was a past commodore of Dobson Yacht Club.

Visitation will be held on 2 July from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM followed by a funeral at 2:00 PM, both in Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, with interment following in the parish cemetery. We regret to advise that Major Matthew Joseph Coady CD (Ret'd) died in Halifax June 18, 2002, at the age of 79.

Matt served in the RCAF during the Second World War. He graduated in engineering from Saint Mary's University and Technical University of Nova Scotia and joined the Army in 1950. Matt served with 1 Maintenance Company on the Northwest Highway System 1953-54, with 4 Field Squadron 1958-60, and was Base Construction Engineer (BCEO) in Montreal between 1963 and 1965. He was the was the first Base Construction Engineer of CFB Cornwallis from 1966 to 1969 upon implementation of the concept of integrated Canadian Forces Bases and he retired in 1970. He was subsequently employed as head of the engineering department at the New Halifax Infirmary of the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax.

We regret to advise of the death of Lionel Grant Copeland at the Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster BC, on 16 June 2002 at the age of 81. 

Grant was born in Winnipeg and raised in Vancouver.  He was a WW II Veteran who joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1940 and served with both the 4^th Field Park Squadron and 2^nd Field Park Company in Italy and Holland.  After demobilization he worked as a mechanic and was a creative craftsman.

We regret to advise of the death of Lance Corporal Harold Wesley Bedford (Ret’d) on 16 June 2002 at the Donwood Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 84 years.

Harold was born in Napinka, MB.  He was a Second World War veteran who served overseas in England and Holland with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1941 to 1945.  He was a Life Member and Past President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #7 in Transcona, MB.  In addition, he served in various other executive positions over the years including Treasurer of Zone 62 of the Legion for many years.  Harold was a carpenter and active in the Carpenters and Joiners Union 343 where he served as President and Business Agent until his retirement.  

Funeral services will be held on 21 June at the Transcona Funeral Chapel with members of the Carpenters Union and Legion as active pallbearers.  There will be a full Legion Honours service.  Harold will be buried in the Military Section of the Transcona Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.  ^{{dcFeb2017gd} [zsd, zcc, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Richard Alfred Graham (Ret'd) of Penticton BC on 8 June 2002 at the age of 88 years.

Richard was born in Olds AB and was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. He was a member of the Penticton Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

We regret to advise of the death of Staff Sergeant George Wagar (Ret’d) suddenly in Calgary AB on 6 June 2002 at the age of 87.

George was a veteran of WWII who served with the 13^th Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers.  The 13^th Field Company fought in the Italian Campaign and then joined the Allied advance in March 1944 through Belgium and The Netherlands. In civilian life he worked for many years in the Oil Industry in both Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Andrew Laidler (Ret’d) of Calgary AB on 4 June 2002 at the Colonel Belcher Care Centre at the age of 95 years.

Born in High Newton-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, England, in 1906, Andrew enlisted in Second World War with the Canadian Army.  He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in England and France.  Andrew was a Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #1 Calgary.

We regret to advise that Corporal Bill Vance, CD passed away late May 2002.

Bill joined the military in 1985 in the Artillery, transferred to Communications Research in 1989 and became a Fire Fighter in Dec 2001.

Bill will be laid to rest in New Glasgow NS on 1 June. 

We regret to advise of the death of John Robert Miller, CD (Ret’d) at the Windsor ON Regional Hospital, Metropolitan Campus, on 29 May 2002 at the age of 68.

John’s career included a posting with 1 Airborne Troop, Royal Canadian Engineers in Calgary AB, the Parachute School in Rivers, MB and a four-year tour with 4 Field Squadron in Germany where he also participated in the Boxing and Hockey Teams.  After leaving the Forces, he went to work for the Ford Motor Company where he spent many years as a Quality Control Supervisor at their Essex ON Engine Plant. He was a member of the Tecumseh Golden Age Club in Windsor as well as a 35-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion L'Ardoise NS Branch #110.   

A Veteran's Memorial Service will take place at the Holy Guardian Angel's Church, L'Ardoise, Cape Breton, NS at a later date with remains to be laid to rest at the Mount Calvary Cemetery, L'Ardoise.    Donations may be made to the Metropolitan Hospital Oncology Building Fund Palliative Care Unit, Windsor.

We regret to advise of the death of Lance Corporal Lloyd Snowden (Ret'd) in Kamloops, BC, on 16 May 2002, aged 84 years.

Lloyd was born in North Bend, BC. He enlisted in June 1942 at age 24 and initially served in the Military Police and Regimental Police for eight months until he was transferred to 1^st Canadian Railway Operating Group, Royal Canadian Engineers in England as an Engineer. He disembarked onto the Continent on 2 September 1944 and ran hospital and prisoner of war trains in France, Germany, Belgium, and Holland.

When the war ended, Lloyd volunteered to have his repatriation delayed for a year as he was not married. He was eventually discharged in February, 1946. After the war, Lloyd worked as an engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway, retiring as Supervisor of Rules Instruction for the Pacific Region with forty-two years of railway service. ^{{dcMay17gd}[zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Phillip Louis “Phil” Roy of Heritage Village in Chilliwack, BC on 4 May 2002 at the age of 75 years.

Phil was born in Lake Megantic, QC. He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Chilliwack and Germany as well as completing a tour with the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) in Egypt.  After retiring from the Army, he worked in Sarnia, ON as an operating engineer before retiring in Chilliwack.  Phil was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #4 in Chilliwack.

We regret to advise of the death of Murray C. Canning of Parrsboro NS on 4 May 2002 at Highland View Regional Hospital in Amherst NS at the age of 73 years.

Murray was born in Parrsboro and served in the Canadian Army in the Royal Canadian Engineers, the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps and the Black Watch  (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada. He was a member of the Black Watch Association, Atlantic Branch. He was a retired carpenter, having worked for many years in Peterborough ON and Parrsboro.
