    We regret to advise the death of Staff Sergeant John William "Johnny" Frouws (Ret'd), suddenly in his greenhouse on 18 May 2011 in Lethbridge AB.

    John was born in Groningen, Netherlands and emigrated as an infant with his family. He grew up in Southern Alberta. As a teenager, he worked for the City of Lethbridge Parks Department. John was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.

    After the war, John resumed working for the City in 1947 as a streetcar and bus driver. In 1962, he was promoted to Transit Superintendent. John completed 38 years of service to the City when he retired in 1976.

    John and his wife were avid gardeners and won Canada's Best Veterans' Vegetable and Flower Garden Trophy five years in a row. They also volunteered as Sunday school teachers at Southminster United Church for several years.

    A Funeral Service was held at the Cornerstone Funeral Home in Lethbridge on Friday 27 May 2011. Interment to follow in Mountain View Cemetery. In memory of John, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
