    We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant George Rudolf Miok at age 28 in Afghanistan on 30 December 2009.

    Sergeant Miok was a Reservist serving in 41 Combat Engineer Regiment. He taught at St. Cecilia's Junior High School in Edmonton. George joined the military at 17 in his Grade 12 year and served as a Reservist while earning his teaching degree at the University of Alberta. He had served in Bosnia in 2002 and in Afghanistan for the first time in 2006. He was on his second tour in Afghanistan and was serving as an Infantry Section Commander with the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team at the time of his death.

    The family and friends of Sgt George Moik have endowed a scholarship to the University of Alberta Faculty of Education in his name. This scholarship is awarded to students with superior academic achievement entering the third or fourth year of study in the Faculty of Education. Selection is based on academic standing. Preference will be given to students who are serving or have served in the Canadian Armed Forces - Regular or Reserve components.
