We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer William Murray, CD (Ret'd) of Chesterville ON at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital on Saturday, 4 January 2020 at age 87. Bill served his country in uniform for 26 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War with 57th Independent Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers, had a period of service with the Canadian Guards where he rose to the rank of Sergeant, and then served the remainder of his career with the Royal Canadian Engineers.
Bill enlisted for service during the Korean War. He deployed to Korea with the 57th Independent Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers (1951-52) where he worked with the 54th Field Park Squadron, Royal Engineers. Bill took his release after Korea and started a family but rejoined the Canadian Army with the Canadian Guards a few years later. He quickly rose to Sergeant and was able to transfer back to RCE while retaining his rank of Sergeant.
Bill Murray then served with the RCE in 3 Field Squadron, Chilliwack BC, 2 Field Squadron, Gagetown NB (1970 -72), deployed to Egypt with the United Nations Emergency Force, and returned to 1 Field Squadron, Petawawa ON (1973) for his last posting. Bill retired in 1975 as a Warrant Officer and resettled in Chesterville, ON. In retirement, Bill was very active with the Korea Veterans Association of Canada.
Friends may call at the Marsden and McLaughlin Funeral Home, Chesterville, on Thursday, 9 January from 2-4:00 and 7-9:00 PM. A Legion service will be held on Thursday evening at 6:30 PM. Funeral service will be held at St. Clare’s Anglican Church, Winchester, on Friday, 10 January 2020 at 11:00 AM, followed by cremation. Donations to St. Clare’s Anglican Church would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
