We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Larry Frederick Cade, CD (Ret’d) on 12 July 2019, peacefully at home in Victoria, BC at age 71 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Larry was born in Winnipeg, MB. He spent his childhood there and graduated from Windsor Park Collegiate. He then embarked on a great adventure in 1966 when he headed off to the Royal Military College (RMC) in Kingston, ON to study civil engineering. The military not only offered Larry an education but it provided him a career, a life of travel, and a wonderful community of friends.
After graduating from RMC in 1970, Larry served for a short time as a Maritime Surface and Sub-surface naval officer in Halifax, NS before he reclassified to the Military Engineering Branch in 1971 where he spent the majority of his military career. Larry next served at both Maritime Command HQ and at Base Halifax before returning to the Royal Military College for Post Graduate training in Environmental Engineering (1975-77) after which he returned to Halifax to work in this field. Larry then left Halifax to work with the Air Force where he served as Base Construction Engineering Officer at Greenwood, NS (1981-82) and in Winnipeg with 1 Construction Engineering Unit and Base Winnipeg. Larry then returned to Halifax where he was Project Manager Jetty 2 (1985)
Larry served in Air Command HQ as Senior Staff Office Military Engineering Management in 1989 and then returned to Esquimalt where he served as the Senior MARPAC Engineer and Base Esquimalt Construction Engineer (1990-93).
Larry retired from the Canadian Forces after his Esquimalt posting and set permanent roots in Victoria. He traded in his military uniform for a jacket and tie when he joined the BC provincial Ministry of Attorney General. Larry continued his engineering career where he became Senior Facilities Program Manager and supported courthouse facilities across British Columbia province until he retired in 2015.
Larry was an engaged member of his community. He was a dedicated soccer referee and volunteered much of his time supporting the local soccer community. He was an active member of the Vancouver Island RMC Ex-Cadet Club and served on its executive committee.
