    We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Spurgeon S. Conrad (Ret’d) at age 94 on 14 April 2014 in Port Williams, NS.

    Spurgeon was born at Broad Cove, Lunenburg County, NS, in 1919. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942 and completed his basic Royal Canadian Engineer training in Yarmouth and his advanced training at Camp Petawawa, ON. Spurgeon went overseas in 1944 and served in England, France, Belgium and Holland. He returned to Halifax in December 1945 and was discharged in 1946 at the rank of Sergeant.

    After demobilization Spurgeon was a John Deere Equipment dealer. He was very active in community activities - becoming Chief of the Port Williams Volunteer Fire Department after 19 years of service, Director of the Kings Co. Emergency Measures Organisation, a life member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #074, the Lions Cub and other clubs and groups. Among the many awards Sturgeon received was the Provincial Remarkable Citizens Award for volunteer work that was presented by Lieut. Gov. Lloyd Crouse in 1990.
