Contexte 

The D&E section Canadian Airborne Regiment carried out general tasks that arose as the contingent reserve. Evacuating casualties and bodies, clearing roads and buildings, manning and constructing OPs, establishing defensive positions, the clearance and rendering safe on the reoccupation of the Ledra Palace were major tasks with many stories. Several section members were appointed section commanders for ad hoc groups of tradesmen and support company personnel assigned to defensive and clearance tasks.

Sgt Walton Canadian Airborne Regiment carried out many and varied tasks throughout the mission, initially in charge of both Greek and Turk UN civilians. He led the hasty occupation of the Nicosia Airport, negotiated local ceasefires, clearing buildings and rendering safe OPs and trenches. He was assigned many VIP security details.

Citation 

Sergeant T. H. F. Walton, a native of Vancouver, British Columbia, has been appointed to the Order of Military Merit in the grade of Member for outstanding professionalism during the Cyprus fighting in July 1974. His unselfish, humanitarian and military actions during the battle for Nicosia Airport were instrumental in restoring peace, preventing further bloodshed and ensuring the most favourable United Nations presence in the area.
