In a powerful demonstration of pride, and grassroots leadership, the Engineer Family at CFB Edmonton played a central role in organizing a series of Asian Heritage Month TGIF events across all three messes. These events brought people together and raise culture awareness of Defence Team Canadian Asian Network (DTCAN) and other Advisory Groups available for both public servants and military members.

The first TGIF event was hosted by 1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) at the Edmonton Warrant Officers’ & Sergeants’ Mess. Featuring a Panda Express menu, the gathering brought together senior NCOs and Warrant Officers to highlight the importance of unity and the value of embracing diversity within the ranks. As part of the event, Capt Kyle Ho, Real Property Operations Unit (West) (RPOU-W), a formal member of the Mess was invited by the President of the Mess Committee to speak on the cultural richness within the military and to announce the official establishment of the DTCAN“ I recognize the vital role that Senior NCOs and Warrant Officers play in mentoring junior ranks and guiding officers,” said Capt Ho during his remarks. “I hope to see greater participation and support for DTCAN’s mission at this level, as it sends a powerful message about the importance of cultural awareness and respect across all ranks.”

The second TGIF event was a collaborative effort between 1 CER, RPOU-W, and local DTCAN members. Held at the Junior Ranks’ Mess, the event featured a Vietnamese sandwich lunch organized by MCpl Johnson Phung, 1 CER on 23 May 25, with decorations and logistical support coordinated through Capt Miles Smith, LdSH(RC) and the RPOU-W work party. The event drew over 100 attendees from across CFB Edmonton, sparking meaningful conversations about DTCAN and other Defence Advisory Groups. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the cultural experience and several joined DTCAN after learning that it operates in alliance and not a competition for attentions and resources with other advisory groups.

The final TGIF event took place at the Edmonton Garrison Officers’ Mess (EGOM), where DTCAN members worked closely with Mess Manager Dawn DeCosse and Ashly Umpherville to finalize a Chinese food menu and deliver a message of inclusion during the event. A formal announcement about DTCAN’s mission and open membership was made, encouraging participation and idea-sharing from across the base.

Dawn expressed the mess community’s ongoing commitment to supporting all similar initiatives from all members “We are always open to supporting great ideas, especially when they bring people together. If you are willing to do the legwork, we’re here to help.” You can contact the mess community at P-EGOMFB@intern.mil.ca

These events are the demonstrations of grassroots leadership, cultural education, and inclusive community-building. They also highlight how local resources, and passionate individuals can drive meaningful change regardless of their positions and ranks.

Special thanks go to Capt Benjamin Campbell, Capt Lisa White, and Capt Bruce Blanchard from RPOU-W for their planning and support. Thanks to Pte Allen Evangelista, 3 CDSB for sharing his Filipino heritage and assisting with event logistics. Thanks to the mess communities, especially Ashly Umpherville, Dawn DeCosse and Capt Miles Smith, for their financial support to make this possible.

DTCAN is not an exclusive group and only limited its’ membership to Asians. It is a welcoming network for all members, regardless of cultural background, who are committed to learn more about Asian cultures within the Canadian cultures. The next DTCAN initiative will be Lunar New Year Celebration 2026. If you wish to assist or get involved with DTCAN, please contact dtcan-raced@forces.gc.ca
