We regret to announce the death of Corporal Dustin Roy Robert Joseph Wasden of 12 Field Squadron, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, Edmonton, in Afghanistan on 20 August 2008 at age 25 along with two Sapper comrades.

Born in 1983 in Prince Albert SK, Dustin spent his early years in Leoville SK before moving to Mildred in 1991. Graduating from Spiritwood High School in 2001, he was active in the 4H Club throughout his youth. In November 2004, Dustin joined the Canadian Forces and completed his basic training in February 2005, followed by his field engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, in Gagetown, NB. In the fall of 2005, he was posted to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Edmonton, AB and completed a mountain operations course during his time at 1 CER.

On 24 February 2008, Dustin deployed to Kandahar with 12 Field Squadron, 1 CER. On 20 August 2008, he was killed, along with two other sappers, when a roadside bomb detonated near their armoured vehicle on a notoriously dangerous stretch of highway in southern Afghanistan. He was 25 years old.

In December 2009, the province of Saskatchewan named Dustin Wasden Island in memory of Corporal Wasden. The Island can be found in the province's northern reaches on Wasden Lake, named in honour of  Dustin's great-uncle Harold D. Wasden, who died in 1944 in the Netherlands as he fought in the Second World War.

Funeral will take place at 1400hrs on Wednesday 3 September 2008 at the Bourdages Cameron Memorial Arena (Community centre), 1^st Street East, Spiritwood SK.
