Lt Alfred Edward Street, 2nd Field Company, Military Cross

Contexte

During the assault across the Zuid Beveland Canal on the night 27/28 October 1944, this officer was in charge of the construction of a 320-foot floating bridge in support of the operation. Heavy and accurate shell fire on several occasions caused severe casualties and disrupted the work, but Lieutenant Street quickly reorganized his men each time and by his coolness and courage in the face of the enemy shelling spurred them to greater efforts.

The outstanding skill, courage and leadership displayed by this officer in carrying to completion a most hazardous task is deserving of the highest possible praise and his actions were in large part responsible for the division's speedy and successful clearing of the Zuid Beveland peninsula and the subsequent freeing of the approaches to the port of Antwerp.
