Sgt Philip Macphail, 8th Fd Sqn, Military Medal

On the 13th October 1944, Sergeant MacPhail of 2 Troop was engaged in the construction of a Class 40 Bailey Bridge over the Leopold Canal at Strooiburg. Throughout the entire operation, Sergeant MacPhail showed extreme devotion to duty. In the face of intense enemy mortar fire, having no regard for his personal safety, he continually rallied and encouraged his men by his example. His high standard of leadership, initiative and coolness under fire was an inspiration to his men and contributed greatly to the successful completion of this task. This bridge was the first continuous link with the hard pressed 7 Canadian Infantry Brigade bridgehead on the north bank of the canal.
