Saint Barbara's Day 2026

Published October 22, 2026

Good day to all fellow Engineers,

To celebrate Saint Barbara, Engineers and Gunners have jointly planned activities at Bell Sensplex. We invite all serving and retired members, civilian partners, friends and family to join us to celebrate this day and to partake in some fun activities—or simply to cheer on your peers!

A huge thanks to CMEA and to our Artillery colleagues and friends for supporting the event.

The Poppy - A Legacy of Remembrance

Every November, some 20 million Canadians wear a red poppy to honour those who sacrificed their lives in military service. Few know that Canadian Military Engineer Brigadier James L. Melville  CBE, MC, ED, ADC played an important role in establishing the poppy tradition in Canada and ensuring it would also help those who returned from war. His story links the remembrance of the fallen with the welfare of surviving veterans.

The Cariboo Road in Colonial BC

Few infrastructure projects influenced the development of colonial British Columbia more than the Cariboo (Wagon) Road. Extending about 550 kilometres from Yale to Barkerville, the road was built through challenging terrain and remains one of the nineteenth century's colony’s defining engineering achievements. Built between 1862 and 1865 during the Cariboo Gold Rush, it transformed a remote, difficult frontier into a connected region that could support settlement, commerce, and government.
