Sgt Edward Theodore Leikam, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Edward Theodore Leikam, CD (Ret’d) of Edmonton AB on 9 September 2021 at the age of 81 years. Ed was a Sapper Apprentice.
Ed was born in Quesnel BC and joined the Canadian Forces in 1956 as a member of the 5th Intake Sapper Apprentices. After completing his training at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack BC, he was posted to 1 Field Squadron in Petawawa ON. During this tour, he deployed with the United Nations Emergency Force in Egypt (1959-60). Ed was next posted to 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack (1960-61) before being selected for a tour in Germany with 4 Field Squadron (1961-64).
After his tour in Germany, Ed returned to 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack (1964- 66) during which time he deployed for his second tour with UNEF (1965-66). Upon returning from this deployment, Ed was posted to Camp Dundurn SK and, subsequently to CFB Cold Lake from where he retired from the Canadian Forces in 1982 and settled in Edmonton.
After his release from the Canadian Forces, Ed worked as a civilian with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police at their Divisional Headquarters in Edmonton as a property manager. He also worked with the Corps of Commissionaires. After that, he did odd jobs driving and delivering until his health deteriorated. He was an active member of the Retired Sappers in Edmonton.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will be held at a future date. Online condolences can be sent to the funeral home.
