The following is a list of Canadian Engineer Warrant Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Sappers awarded Military Medal (MM) or Bar during the First World War while serving in an Engineer unit. The list is far from complete. More than 1200 were awarded to Engineers, Signals and Railway troops during the war. So far, we have identified fewer than 300 awards.
The Military Medal was established in 1916. It was awarded to other ranks for "acts of gallantry and devotion to duty under fire". In all, 13,654 MMs were awarded to those serving with Canadian forces, including 848 first bars and 38 second bars. While every award is recorded in personnel files, the majority do not have accompanying citations telling the story as to how and why it was awarded. By carefully reviewing unit histories and personal files, we have been able to create a profile for most of the recipients. It is time-. consuming, but rewarding task.
