After more than 30 years of loyal and dedicated service to the Canadian Armed Forces and the Canadian Military Engineer Branch, Sgt J.G.S Elie, CD, (00339) will retire on 1 April 2025. Sylvain Élie, born in Arthabaska, Québec, in 1972,
lives in Donnacona with his partner, Véronique
Lamonde. Together, they have three children:
Maxime, 29, who lives in Calgary; Sara-Frédérique,
27, currently in Saint-Jean for her recruit course;
and Yohan, 25, who lives in Ottawa. He enlisted as
a reserve engineer on November 28, 1989, at 10
EGC (now 35e RGC). In August 1994, he was
transferred directly to the regular force at 5e RGC
and participated in Operation Cavalier training.
From November 1995 to January 1996, he
completed the QL5 in Chilliwack, then was
promoted to the rank of Cpl in March 1996.
In April 1997, he was transferred to St-Jean-sur-
Richelieu as assistant to the base SMR for a few
months, before joining the Exacta Centre project.
During the winter of 1997-1998, he participated in Operation Verglas, in charge of block A of the
General-Jean-Victor-Allard building (mega), as well as Bell Canada employees, while being
himself affected by the disaster. In May 1998, he supervised the closure of the housing section
and the bachelor quarters of the St-Hubert base, including planning the residents’ moves and
distributing furniture and mess effects to other bases.
Returning to 5e RGC in July 2001, he deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina with Roto 10 from March
to October 2002 as an OC driver. In 2004, he successfully completed the Nijmegen march
training for the Valcartier base team. In 2005, he took charge of the 5e RGC regimental
ammunition.
In 2006 he took part in FO02-06 training.
In July 2007, he was transferred to ASU Wainwright, in charge of a fleet of vehicles. Then, from
October to December 2008, he completed the leader course in Valcartier, was promoted to
MCpl in January 2009 and was transferred in the summer of 2010 to LFWATC Wainwright, in
charge of weapons vaults and as an instructor on leader courses.
From August 2011 to February 2012, he completed the Sgt. Then, in July 2012, he was
transferred to 2 CER Petawawa as Sound Commander and in charge of Regimental Ammunition.
In July 2014, he was transferred RI to ASU Edmonton Det Wx, where he worked as a patrolman
controlling the Wainwright firing range until June 2015, when he was transferred to Ottawa to
33 CER, in charge of transport and QMR, as well as the building in Orléans. In July 2020 he
transferred to JIIFC, Leitrim as an instructor. Promoted to SGT in July 2021, he transferred back
to 5 RGC on 15 July 2021, where he will finish his career on 31 March 2025.
