Both a Canadian and British Citizen, Major Jewell was born, raised and educated in the UK. His military career began in 2000 when he joined the British Army Officer Training Corps (Reserves), subsequently joining the British Army Regular Force in 2005 and attending the 12 month commissioning course at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst. At the end of this 12 month course he was commissioned into the Royal Engineers and posted to 36 Gurkha Engineer Regiment in the South East of England where he spent 2 years as a Field Troop Commander. In 2007 he deployed with his troop to Helmand Province, Afghanistan, where he completed a demanding yet rewarding 7 month tour. During this deployment he was also exposed to the CAF and realised just how ‘similar’ the two militaries are. Upon return he was posted to 21 Armored Engineer Regiment in Northern England as a Squadrons Operations Officer. This was his first exposure to armored engineering and he spent many months on the Canadian Prairies at CFB Suffield, were the British Army regularly trains. On completion of this posting, and with encouragement from his Nova Scotian wife, he made the decision to transfer to the Canadian Military Engineers and at the beginning of 2010 switched uniforms. He spent his first four years in the Canadian Armed Forces in New Brunswick, were he served as an instructor and Operations Officer at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering and the Regimental Operations Officer at 4 Engineer Support Regiment. In 2014 he was posted to his current position of Officer Commanding 13 Armoured Squadron, 1 Combat Engineer Regiment at CFB Edmonton. Within his time in the CAF he has deployed on domestic operations as well as an international deployment to Kuwait last year, where he was a Canadian embed working in the US Army 3 star HQ responsible for coordinating operations in Syria and Iraq.
He is married to Sara and has two children, Isla (5) and Oliver (3). He has made the decision to leave the Regular Force so he can provide more stability to his young family. In August he will commence his new career with the Government of Alberta where he will be employed as the Director, Emergency Management, for the Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General.
