Their accomplishments in this race are nothing short of remarkable, showcasing their unwavering determination, resilience, and true warrior spirit. There is a full description of the race at the organization's website Global Limits Bhutan - The Last Secret. Briefly, it is a 200 km six-day stage ultra marathon in Bhutan, through high mountain trails. There were 60 racers from 16 countries in this last race. Six did not finish (DNF). Major Miueller came second and Maj Self was twelfth and the sixth female finisher.
Running a multi-day ultra marathon in Bhutan is not for the faint of heart. It demands staying in a brave space and facing the consequences of every decision with unwavering resolve. Major Mueller and Major Self embody the best versions of themselves as they push both their physical and mental limits, fully embracing the enormity of the task at hand, with no guarantees of success.
Throughout the race, they encountered deep lows, moments when quitting seemed like the only option. Yet, their ability to reframe their perspectives and stay curious allowed them to detach themselves from the overwhelming emotions of the moment. Instead, they focused on what they could do in each moment to keep pushing towards the finish line, defying their own doubts and limitations.
Their results speak volumes about their dedication and perseverance. Major Mueller emerged as the top male athlete, claiming victory after an astonishing 30 hours, 42 minutes, and 4 seconds of relentless effort. Major Self, not far behind, secured an impressive 6th place among the female competitors, completing the race in 35 hours, 4 minutes, and 38 seconds. Their achievements are testaments to their indomitable spirits and unyielding commitment to pushing beyond their boundaries.
The race itself presented a formidable challenge. Over the course of six stages spanning six consecutive days in the high mountains, Major Mueller, Major Self, and their fellow competitors covered a staggering distance of 200 kilometers. The arduous terrain tested their endurance, as they traversed off-road tracks, gravel, forest soil, and asphalted ground, all while crossing three high passes above 3500m. With an overall climbing of over 11,000m and a descending of 9,000m, this race demanded nothing short of their absolute best.
Their journey to this moment was not without its own hurdles. The race had been postponed for four long years due to the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the Bhutanese government. Only 60 highly experienced and determined athletes were selected to compete, ensuring a greater likelihood of completing this extraordinary challenge.
Major Michael Mueller and Major Kristine Self have proven themselves to be champions not only in the realm of athletics but also as inspiring representatives of the Canadian Armed Forces. Their journey in the Bhutan ultra marathon serves as a powerful reminder that with unwavering determination, a resilient mindset, and the willingness to push beyond our limits, we can all achieve remarkable feats. Their triumphs ignite the flames of inspiration within us all, urging us to confront our own challenges head-on and discover the strength and greatness that lie within us.
