Lt Morgan Joseph Murphy, 4 Fd Coy

Morgan Joseph Murphy was born in Toronto, ON to Harold J. and Cecilia R. Murphy. He was a good student and a gifted athlete when he graduated from De La Salle College (Oaklands) with a high standing and was accepted into the Royal Military College in 1940.  He was a member of the Class of ’42, the last wartime class to graduate. 

Lt Elbert Watson Dowd, MiD, 1st Fd Sqn

Elbert Watson Dowd or "Ebby" as his family liked to call him, grew up in Ottawa, ON. He had two brothers and attended Glebe Secondary School. He graduated from Queen’s University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. During his time at Queen’s he worked for the Dominion Bridge Company and another he worked for Algoma Steel Corporation during the summers.  He also played football and was an outstanding athlete. 

Spr Daniel Thomas Chisholm, No 1 Drilling Coy

Daniel was born in Springhill, Nova Scotia, the son of Daniel and Annie Chisholm. He was a coal miner and carpenter working for the Dominion Steel & Coal Company in Springhill when he enlisted in January 1940.  Earlier, he had served for four years (1929-33) in the Cumberland Highlanders, a Militia unit later merged into the North Nova Scotia Highlanders. He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Engineers and after basic training, qualified as Carpenters Helper, Group “C” in April 1940. After arriving in a holding unit in the UK.

Spr Claire Henry, 2nd Fd Pk Coy

Claire Henry was born in Haliburton, ON. He was a truck driver truck living with his family in Oshawa and when he enlisted on 16 August 1941 in Toronto.  After completing his basic Engineer training, he was sent overseas and arrived in the UK in June 1942. In September he was posted to the 2nd Field Park Company of the Royal Canadian Engineers.

Spr Alfred J. Bernard, 1st Fd Coy

Alfred Joseph Bernard was born to Noah and Rose Bernard in Belleview, Manitoba. He was working as a miner with the International Nickle Company in Sudbury when he enlisted in the army on 7 March 1942. He was posted to the Royal Canadian Engineers and transferred to the 1st Field Company where he qualified as a Group B Miner and Group C Pioneer

Sapper Bernard arrived in the UK on 10 July 1943 and was in Italy by November. A month later his brother, Flt-Sgt David Bernard, RCAF, was declared missing during a bombing raid over Germany.
