Sapper Hilton was a member of a party operating a water point near Caen on 8 August 1944 when a bombing attack developed causing casualties to other men in his section. In great danger from bombs and flying splinters from an ammunition dump nearby, this soldier rendered first aid and carried two of the casualties to a place of safety. During this action Sapper Hilton carried out his duties calmly and efficiently with no regard for his own safety.
