On 8th March 1945, 2 Platoon of 554 Field Company, Royal Engineers, was in support of 4/5 RSF [Royal Scots Fusiliers ?] on the attack on Alpon. Under command was a D-7 Armoured Bulldozer driven by Sapper MacHardy, L., and Sapper Ray, F. During the whole of the afternoon the bulldozer was well up with the platoon waiting orders to go in to clear road. They could not get in due to observed enemy D.F. [Directed Fire ?] Task. At dusk they moved up with Sapper MacHardy driving the bulldozer right up to the Forward Defended Locality, meeting with the leading platoon and clearing a large block of trees and anti-tank mines. Sapper MacHardy worked for several hours on this work under constant fire, small arms, mortar and shell, until relieved. The enemy self-propelled guns had been active in the area and the supporting tanks could not follow the leading infantry on this account. Not only did the bulldozer driver follow them but he was right up with the leading platoon. The progress was magnificent. His efforts allowed supporting arms to progress in this last German barrier before the River Rhine.
