Spr Hakon Ingeman Bredeson, 20th Field Company, Military Medal

At 1500 hours, 28 April 1945, Sapper Bredeson was motor operator on one of the storm boats taking assaulting infantry of the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders from the west to the east bank of the Ems River. The forming up place for the boats was under enemy shell fir and while waiting at the start point Sapper Bredeson was wounded in the leg by shrapnel. There were no spare boats crews so Sapper Bredeson realized that, if he had his wound attended to, his boat would be lost to the operation. He therefore carried on with the job, making two trips with boats of infantry under heavy small arms fire. He was wounded again on the second trip by a bullet in the leg but completed this trip and brought his boat safely back to the near bank, before receiving medical attention. His desire to carry on in spite of a wound which needed attention showed devotion to his duty and helped the operation to be a success.
