On the 24 August 1944, L.54, 68, 6 Sapper Kreuger, C.H. of 1 Canadian Military Equipment Company [sic], Royal Canadian Engineers, attached to 8 Canadian Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers, was clearing the route for the advance of the division from Monnai to Fontaine with a D-7 Angledozer. The untiring efforts, skill and initiative of Sapper Kreuger in clearing a route which was liberally strewn with mimes, burnt-out vehicles and tanks and under fire from snipers, enabled the division to maintain a very high rate of advance. After working all day on the route, over a distance of 24 miles, he brought his machine forward to Fontaine and constructed the diversionary route across the River Risle in the face of heavy enemy mortar fire. Sapper Kreuger was well aware all this time that no infantry bridgehead had been established and knew the personal danger to which he was exposed. His realization of the urgency of the situation and the quick initiative he displayed were chiefly instrumental in maintaining the division's advance.
