Sapper Thompson, S.B., provided an inspirational display of courage and attention to duty under heavy enemy fire throughout the entire Dieppe operation, 19 August 1942. Without orders, he took a dangerously exposed position at the port bulkhead door of his landing craft and engaged the enemy on the west jetty with a Bren gun. Later, under extremely heavy enemy barrage, he helped remove two wounded machine gunners from the deck at the bow and assisted in closing the water tight doors, an act which prevented the ship from sinking.
