Sgt James Fullen, 10th Field Squadron, Military Medal

During the advance from Arnhem to the Zuider Zee in April 1945, Sergeant Fullen of 10 Canadian Field Squadron, with great determination and devotion to duty, led detachments under his command in support of 5 Canadian Armoured Brigade. Despite the fact that his vehicles were unprotected by armour plating and whilst under continuous accurate enemy shell and mortar fire, he pressed forward, rapidly improvising methods of using engineer equipment to enable the tanks to surmount the many obstacles encountered. Again during the operations in the vicinity of Weirwerd near the port of Delfzijl when his detachment was supporting the leading infantry, Sergeant Fullen, displaying the highest initiative and outstanding courage, personally located and removed the enemy demolition charges from a bridge essential to the advance. This Non-Commissioned Officer was exposed to artillery and small arms fire, and as he well knew, he was also faced with additional dangers of the booby traps incorporated in the charges and their liability to sympathetic detonation from the heavy shells bursting in the immediate vicinity of the bridge. As a result of the gallant action and inspired leadership under heavy fire of this Non-Commissioned Officer, all obstacles were overcome with the minimum of delay to the attacking infantry.
