Sgt Archibald Vincent Burlton, 9th Field Squadron, Military Medal

During the night of 9/10 September 1944, No.1 Troop of which Sergeant Burlton was Troop Sergeant relieved No.2 Troop in the construction of a 90-foot B-8 Bailey Bridge at Moerbrugge at approximately 2000 hours in daylight. The approach to the bridge site was under constant and extremely heavy observed artillery, mortar and semi-automatic fire. Due to this the troop became scattered along half a miles of road ditches and collars. This Non-Commissioned Officer with no regard for his own safety and by skilful use of cover succeeded in collecting the troop and getting it forward to the bridge site in a succession of small parties, each of which he brought along the fire-swept road. His example and qualities of leadership were responsible for getting the troop onto the bridge site in condition to work. Later during the construction of the bridge he carried out his normal duties in a most exemplary manner. During this period his duties required him to make four successful journeys along the road under constant shelling. The completion of the bridge was due in no small measure to Sergeant Burlton's example, courage under fire and skill.
