Maj Lindsay Hugh Brown, 7th Field Company, Distinguished Service Order

Major Brown took command of 7 Canadian Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers at Antwerp on 28 September 1944, and served with distinction in that capacity until wounded by a mine explosion on 15 April 1945. Typical of this officer's fearless determination to assist in the advance of the infantry was the magnificent effort in clearing and repairing roads up to and on the Walcheren Causeway in support of the attack by 5 Canadian Infantry Brigade. Constantly with the forward elements Major Brown personally supervised the filling of craters and clearing of mines on this fireswept causeway, the crossing of which was fiercely contested by the enemy. On 8 February 1945 at the beginning of the breakout from the Nijmegen salient Major Brown's company had the task of clearing the road from Berg-en-Dal through Wyler to Kranenburg, the only road over which 15 Scottish Division could advance along the left of the Reichswald toward Cleve. Reconnaissance by this officer while the battle for Wyler was still in progress definitely established the position of the heavily mined areas and under his able direction the road was cleared and 15 Scottish Division passed through on schedule. This officer's intimate knowledge of the routes and country generally through which his brigade was advancing, resulting from continuous forward reconnaissance, frequently exposed to intense artillery fire and snipers, was of great assistance to the infantry brigade with which his company was working and assured the quickest possible completion of all engineering tasks. Throughout all operations Major Brown's devotion to duty, leadership and personal bravery were worthy of the highest praise and in keeping with the traditions of his Corps.
