Lt William Bentley Tobey, 18th Field Company, Military Cross

The wording of the citation is sometimes awkward, but is copied exactly as found at Directorate of History and Heritage. Lieutenant Tobey joined the 18th Canadian Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers on the 7 August 1944 and has acted as a platoon officer until the cessation of hostilities on 5 May 1945. During this period Lieutenant Tobey has exhibited the highest devotion to duty and a complete disregard for personal safety when under fire. He has been an inspiration and example not only to his own men but also to the company as a whole. This officer has been given, and has volunteered for many difficult and dangerous engineer tasks and reconnaissances. Always he has carried them out most skilfully and cheerfully, at times behind the enemy's lines and often when under direct observation and fire. In all cases the information he obtained has been accurate and complete and has directly resulted in speeding up the pace for the advance of our own troops. Lieutenant Tobey has always followed the policy of leading his men on all work. At any time when he considered a job very dangerous he always covered the ground first, refusing to let Non-Commissioned Officers or men go forward until he was satisfied the risk to undergo was in keeping with the tactical situation and the urgency of the work. At all times when under heavy fire, Lieutenant Tobey made sure his men had taken proper cover before considering his own safety. By such action of showing complete indifference to danger and exhibiting such coolness this officer has won the admiration and respect of every officer, Non-Commissioned Officer and man in the company. By exemplifying all the finest qualities of leadership, Lieutenant Tobey has produced in his men the temper to carry on efficiently and cheerfully in the face of danger and under the most adverse conditions. Under him, his platoon has always given its best and have proved themselves to be a first class fighting and working team. This officer's fine battle record and his outstanding leadership, especially in trying circumstances, deserve him the highest commendation
