Lt Frederick Weight Philpot, MC (Ret’d)

    • RCE Badge circa 1937 - 1952

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Frederick Weight Philpot, MC (Ret’d) peacefully at the Rouge Valley Centenary Hospital, Scarborough, ON on 12 June 2009 in his 92nd year.

Frederick was a WW II veteran who served with the 12th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in Italy.  On 1 November 1944, while in support of “C” Squadron of the 27th Lancers, a bridge was found to be necessary to enable the armoured cars to proceed.  Although under constant shell fire, Frederick decided to immediately build a 50-foot single Bailey Bridge, all the while under heavy mortar fire.  By reason of his decision to bridge immediately, the enemy was caught unawares and suffered severe casualties.  For his actions, Frederick was awarded an immediate Military Cross.

Visitation will be held at the Scarborough Chapel of McDougall and Brown, 2900 Kingston Road on 16 June from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.  Service will be held in the funeral home chapel on 17 June at 2:00 p.m.   Donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Toronto or to the Parkinson Society of Canada.   {gdDec2016kh} [zpp, zcc]
