We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Garnet Elias Bourgaize (Ret'd) on 5 January 2020 at the age of 100 years in Châteauguay. QC.

Garnet was born in the Gaspé. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in his 20s in 1940 and after training in Canada, he embarked for the United Kingdom out of Halifax. Like many Canadian soldiers, Garnet spent several years in England before D-Day and remembered the German bombings in the Manchester area. After D-Day Garnet was active, like with many Sapper units, in building bridges to maintain the advance of the Allies. He was badly wounded in France by an exploding grenade and was invalided. Garnet was returned home to Quebec in 1945 after the end of the war and spent an additional six months in hospital to complete his recovery. After demobilization Garnet followed a career as an engineer for different transport companies that plied the St. Lawrence Seaway.
