Three years ago, Real Property Operations (RP Ops) identified leftover trusses from a previous project that were hidden away in a storage area. Instead of letting them deteriorate, RP Ops opted to canvas base users on storage deficiencies within the detachment to optimize the use of the trusses. Det Op’s (fire hall) and range control were identified as having the most pressing needs for storage at the time. They requested two garages of a size that would maximize the span of the existing trusses that were in storage and were constructed to specs of 28’ x 31’ x 12’. Both garages were the same overall size but required minor site alterations that would serve different purposes.

Designs were worked on and finalized during stakeholder engagement with Range Control and the fire hall. The next steps included identifying capabilities and capacities within the various shops to address the storage deficiencies. From the stakeholder engagement conversations, it was made clear that this would be a multiyear project based on personnel availability and cost, while also maintaining current operations.

RP Ops Contracts was engaged with the contracts inspector Aaron Bohrson for each site’s levelling and concrete pad construction. There was also a heavy reliance on a variety of shop specialities to bring these projects to fruition. The electrical shop supervisor, Del Thingvold and journeyman, Neil Gibbons provided trenching support for utilities that were required for construction. The Carpenter shop Cpl Keenan, Gurr, Cpl Brandon Bergman, and Cpl Derek Friesen completed the building envelope and was responsible for the interior finish. All materials used for these projects were sourced based on our existing materials held in stock. After receiving stakeholder input, all interior finishes by the paint shop, Dean Deobald were picked to maximize OJE opportunities for the trades. The carpenter shop troops developed skills in framing, metal roofing installation, metal cladding installation, insulating, drywall installation, mudding and taping, etc. The electrical shop troops developed skills in panel installation, electrical rough-in and final electrical installation.

This project is amongst many that have been used for trade development in the last few years. Some of the projects completed include the detachment mess bathroom renovations, office renovations and insulating buildings that were previously used for cold storage.  These completed projects provide a multi-faceted opportunity for RP Ops; cost savings to RP Ops, trade experience for the military troops, and a sense of accomplishment for members working on these projects are a few of the benefits of this type of construction approach.
