We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer Guy Charbonneau, CD (Ret'd) of Rouyn-Noranda QC on 27 March 2020 at the age of 83 years. Guy was Squadron Sergeant Major of 9è Escadron de Génie in Rouyn-Noranda for almost 23 years.
Guy enlisted in the army cadets in Rouyn-Noranda in 1949 and then moved on to join 9è Escadron de Génie in Rouyn-Noranda with the Canadian Army (Militia) in 1956. By 1960, he had completed his training as Engineer Field Section Commander and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. During this period, he also served a driving instructor and as the Squadron Quartermaster Sergeant. Guy was promoted to Master Warrant Officer in 1970 and was appointed Squadron Sergeant Major, a position he held until May 1993 when he retired from the Canadian Forces.
Some highlights of his work with the squadron included participating in the clearing of an area section of the forest on Mount Kanasuta in 1984 for a future alpine ski slope. In 1990, along with 5 è Régiment de Génie de Combat from Valcartier QC, he participated in the construction of a pedestrian suspension bridge in Aiguebelle National Park.
Guy worked as a mechanic for the Ministry of Transport of Quebec throughout his career as a reservist. Since his retirement from the CAF in 1993, Guy served with the Royal Canadian Legion in Branch 188 in Rouyn-Noranda for 12 years as Treasurer and for two years as President. He was involved with the Golden Age Club for almost six years and as a municipal councillor for the District of Beaudry. Guy was Treasurer and Regional President of the Quebec Association of Provincial Retirees since 2003. In addition, he has assisted with the rites of final farewell for a local funeral home for almost 23 years and occasionally read for the parish community of the Ste-Trinité Church in Rouyn-Noranda.
