After 20 years of dedicated service, Shirley O’Connell, the beloved “Izzy Doll Mama,” will step down from her day-to-day leadership role on 1 November 2024. She will forever retain the title of “Izzy Doll Mama” as she transitions to an advisory position with Izzy Doll Initiative. We are proud to announce that Lise Galuga will take on the leadership role as Executive Director.
The Izzy Doll Initiative, a touching tribute to Master Corporal Mark “Izzy” Isfeld, continues its mission to spread love and comfort to children in need. Isfeld, a Canadian soldier who lost his life clearing landmines in Croatia, was known for sharing his mother’s crocheted dolls with children during his deployments.
Since 2007, Shirley O’Connell has tirelessly led the initiative, fostering a network of volunteers and students who have crafted thousands of Izzy Dolls.
Lise Galuga, a Canadian Military spouse with a deep connection to the initiative, brings a wealth of experience and passion to the role of Executive Director. She has been involved in numerous military initiatives and has worked to share Mark Isfeld’s story, including leading the recent 80 Izzy Dolls for the 80th anniversary of D-Day project.
“I am deeply honoured to continue the extraordinary work started by Carol, Brian, and Shirley. I’m committed to ensuring that Mark’s legacy of compassion continues to inspire volunteers and comfort children in need around the globe,” said Lise Galuga.
As the Izzy Doll Initiative enters this new chapter, we remain committed to its mission of spreading love and hope, so that the Izzy Doll remains a strong symbol of Canadian peacekeeping and humanitarian work well into the future.
