L/Sgt George Francis Percy, 7th Field Company, Military Medal

Since 15 August 1944 this Non-Commissioned Officer has been employed as Reconnaissance Sergeant in 1 Platoon, 7 Canadian Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. Throughout his entire service in this job he has demonstrated outstanding ability and remarkable coolness under fire. He has taken part in every Major action of his company, and the results of his work have contributed greatly towards any successes achieved in the particular actions concerned. On 24 July 1944 this Non-Commissioned Officer was commanding a section of 1 Platoon at St.Andre-sur-Orne, France. The Cameron Highlanders of Canada were dug in and protective mines had been laid by this field company earlier in the month. Number One Section was ordered to lift these mines in daylight to permit the Camerons to attack after dark. Lance-Sergeant Percy took his section out and when the job was two-thirds complete he and his eleven men came under enemy machine gun fire from a point 50 yards distant. Six casualties were suffered. Lance-Sergeant Percy ordered the remainder back and took with him four of the wounded. Then, with complete disregard for his own safety, he went back alone to see if he could aid the remaining two casualties. He found them dead. In attempting to get back to his own lines he came under direct fire and was pinned down until several hours later. As Reconnaissance Sergeant on 8 March 1945, this Non-Commissioned Officer was with his platoon in the attack on Xanten, Germany. The Platoon Officer was killed and Lance-Sergeant Percy took command of the road clearing work with the leading infantry. His personal supervision in leading the armoured bulldozer on its task did much towards the success of this operation. Again, when clearing roads for 5 Canadian Infantry Brigade at Hude, Germany on 2 May 1945, Lance-Sergeant Percy's platoon detected an enemy magnetic mine of a type not encountered before by his company. This Non-Commissioned Officer did very valuable and dangerous work in neutralizing this mine and thus caused only a minium of delay in opening the road.
