For many Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members, running is a way to stay fit. For Maj Michael Mueller, it became a platform to build community, develop athletes, represent Canada on the international stage, and inspire excellence throughout the CAF.
Since being appointed Team Manager of the CAF International Running Team in 2015, Maj Mueller has transformed the program into a nationally recognized and highly accessible high-performance capability. Through his vision and commitment, he implemented transparent, merit-based selection criteria, introduced an open results submission process, and developed a centralized national ranking system. These initiatives removed geographic barriers and ensured that CAF members across Canada could earn selection through performance alone. The result was greater accessibility, increased participation, and a stronger national pool of runners.
Under Maj Mueller's leadership, CAF athletes gained opportunities that had not previously existed. He established pathways for military runners to compete at the Canadian Marathon Championships and Canadian Cross-Country Championships, while creating both developmental and performance streams to support athletes at every stage of their journey. Through consistent outreach and active engagement with the CAF running community, he fostered a culture of inclusivity, excellence, and camaraderie that continues to benefit military athletes today.
From 2015 to 2026, Maj Mueller led CAF teams at numerous international competitions, including CISM Cross-Country Championships, CISM Marathons, and the Military World Games. Frequently serving simultaneously as Team Manager, Chief of Mission, and Coach, he coordinated every aspect of team preparation, administration, and execution. Despite limited resources, he worked closely with PSP staff to maximize athlete performance while maintaining responsible stewardship of public funds. His efforts ensured continuous Canadian representation on the international stage and contributed to remarkable results, including a first-place finish at the CISM Half Marathon in Switzerland in 2023 and a second-place finish in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2024.
When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted sport worldwide, Maj Mueller adapted. Recognizing the importance of maintaining fitness, motivation, and connection across a dispersed force, he developed and delivered a CAF-wide virtual race series. Utilizing platforms such as Strava and implementing validated performance standards, he preserved accountability and competitive integrity while keeping CAF athletes engaged during a period of unprecedented restrictions. This innovative initiative earned the Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services Pandemic Performance Series Award in 2021 and demonstrated his ability to lead through uncertainty.
Maj Mueller's success is built not only on sound administration and strategic vision, but also on his genuine commitment to people. His leadership style is characterized by inclusivity, transparency, and sustained engagement. Whether communicating selection standards, publishing rankings, or responding to athlete inquiries from overseas deployments, he consistently ensured CAF members had the information and support necessary to succeed. His approach created a welcoming environment for runners of all abilities while strengthening the depth and competitiveness of the program.
Beyond his leadership role, Maj Mueller is an accomplished athlete in his own right. Prior to becoming Team Manager, he represented the CAF at CISM competitions from 2009 to 2015 and remains a multiple-time CAF National Marathon Champion. His passion for endurance sport has continued throughout his career, producing impressive results both domestically and internationally. Among his achievements are victory in a 220-kilometre ultra-marathon in Namibia in 2024 and a seventh-place finish at the Canadian Death Race in 2025. He has also devoted countless hours as a volunteer coach, most recently supporting the preparation of the 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group Death Race Team in 2026.
While his accomplishments in military sport are significant, Maj Mueller's impact at RPOU(W) Headquarters extended far beyond athletics. During his three years with the organization, he was a trusted leader, mentor, and colleague. In the summer of 2026, he was selected for one of the most demanding and visible staff appointments in the CAF, serving as the Executive Assistant (EA) to the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff (VCDS). The position required long days, often beginning before 0500 hrs and extending well into the evening, while balancing an exceptionally demanding operational tempo. His selection for such a prestigious appointment speaks volumes about the confidence senior leaders placed in his leadership.
As Maj Mueller transitions to Ottawa and begins this new chapter of service, he leaves behind a legacy that will continue to benefit CAF athletes and military CISM runners for years to come. Through his vision, innovation, and dedication, he institutionalized a high-performance national program, expanded participation opportunities, and ensured Canada remained a respected competitor on the international military sports stage. More importantly, he inspired countless CAF members to pursue excellence, challenge their limits, and discover what they were capable of achieving.
The members of RPOU(W) HQ thank Maj Mueller for his outstanding service, leadership, and friendship over the past three years. While we know the demands of his new appointment will keep him busy, we hope that one day he will have the opportunity to return to the sport and community for which he has such passion as both a coach and a contender once again.
Run, Mueller, Run.
