    We regret to advise of the death of Edward Michael ‘Mike’ Lazoruk on 24 March 2014 at the Central Peace Hospital in Spirit River, AB at the age of 95 years.

    Mike was born in Rycroft, AB and was raised and educated in Rycroft and Spirit River.  He graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in 1940 in Building Construction.  Mike joined the Canadian Army in 1940. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers as a surveyor in both the Italian and Northwest European Theatres. He was discharged in 1945.

    When Mike returned home from the war, he raised a family, and went into construction.  He opened Rycroft Lumber & Building Supplies and over his life he was involved in the construction of a multitude of schools, churches, and arenas, as well as homes and farm buildings throughout the Central Peace area.  Mike was a Charter and Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #224 in Rycroft.   He also served on Rycroft town council as a councillor for five years and mayor for three years.  In 2005, Mike was awarded the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of his accomplishments and commitment to making Alberta a better place.

    A Celebration of Life service will be held on 24 May at 1:00 PM at the Rycroft Community Hall.  Interment will follow at Greenway Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to the Rycroft School Lunch Program or to the Rycroft Hall Restoration Fund. {dcmar2018gd}
