Cpl Chad Gibbons (Ret'd) joined the Real Property Operation Detachment (RPOD) Wainwright as a Contract Inspector in 2022. He began his military career in 2009 as an infantryman before transferring to the Refrigeration and Mechanical Technician trade in 2017 under the Construction Engineer Branch.
Martial Arts and Leadership in BJJ
Beyond his military career, Chad is a dedicated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioner. He began his BJJ journey in 2017 at the Winnipeg Academy of MMA in Brandon, earning his blue belt under Professor Chris Kading in 2018. One thing Chad loves about BJJ is getting fit because of learning how to defend himself. He also trained in Gagetown Evolution under Coach James Locke, now rebranded as Gagetown Submission Grappling under Coach Blake Towsley. Achieving a blue belt is a major milestone, requiring an average of two years of training, with only 10-20% of practitioners reaching this rank. It is also the point where many realize the lifelong effort required to master the art and often choose to move to something else.
"I like how Jiu Jitsu brings different people together on the mat and it is instant friendships no matter where you go. You can't hide on the mat, there is no faking it. At the end of class, you roll, and you find out who you are," Chad says.
After moving to Wainwright, Chad found no BJJ instructor but refused to let that stop him. He self-trained, led classes, and took the initiative to teach BJJ with PSP Wainwright, promoting combat sports within the military. As Head Coach of Evolution BJJ Club in Wainwright, he trained at the Army Close Quarter Combative Gym and later began teaching BJJ at Wainwright Boxing Club, offering classes to both military personnel and civilians.
Commitment to Excellence
In traditional martial arts, a black belt takes around six years of training, yet Chad has remained a blue belt for over six years, continuing his journey despite obstacles. His dedication, perseverance, and willingness to mentor others speak volumes about his character, making him an invaluable asset to the RPOU-W team.
Thank you, Mr. Chad Gibbons, for your service, leadership, and continued contributions to RPOU(W).
