    We regret to advise of the death of Captain James Thomas Johnson, CD (Ret’d) in the Palliative Care Unit of the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow, NS on 23 August 2016. Jim was born in New Glasgow in 1943 and grew up and attended schools in Stellarton, NS before he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1963. 

    Jim served a full 30-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers. Qualified originally as a Military Firefighter, Jim went on to train for and serve in various capacities  in the Military Construction Engineering field across Canada and overseas. He served in 1974-79 at Canadian Forces Base Lahr, West Germany and in 1979-81 with the Royal Canadian Navy aboard HMCS Huron. Jim was Commissioned from the Ranks in 1981 and in 1991-92 he deployed as a Military Observer/Liaison Officer with the United Nations Truce Supervisory Organization (UNTSO) on the borders of Israel, Lebanon, and Syria.

    Jim retired in 1994 with the rank of Captain and returned home to Stellarton. He was employed for several years with the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board driving school bus. For the past 6 years Jim served as a Film Classifier for the Film Classification Board of Service Nova Scotia. 

    A longtime member of the YMCA, Jim was a regular there for many years. Appreciative of most music, he proved a gifted musician with the guitar and he recently mastered the trumpet and enjoyed playing with the New Horizons Band and with Pictou County Brass and Reed. 

    The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Friday, 26 August 2016 in the H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Chapel, Stellarton. Memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, 27 August in Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton.   Interment will be in the church cemetery. Family flowers only.
