During the assault on the Gothic Line on the night of 29/30 August 1944, Lance-Corporal Dent was one of a party detailed to clear mines on the left axis of advance. Enemy machine gun and mortar fire was extremely heavy and held up our attacking forces. Lance-Corporal Dent and another sapper continued prodding and lifting mines until caught in the cross fire of our own and enemy light machine guns. After 20-25 minutes the fire lifted and Lance-Corporal Dent continued to the limit of his task, still in advance of our leading elements. By his bravery and keen sense of duty, this Non-Commissioned Officer opened a gap through which supporting arms were able to get forward at a very early hour, thus contributing greatly to the success of the attack.
