A Newfoundlander and member of the Canadian Armed Forces was just awarded with one of the greatest honours in the Canadian military.

Cory Kavanagh is a combat engineer with the 37 Combat Engineer Regiment in St. John's and has been in the military for more than 21 years having toured in Eritrea, Bosnia, and Haiti over his career.

Yesterday, Kavanagh was presented with the Order of Military Merit by Governor General David Johnston at a ceremony in Ottawa. He says it was an honour.

Kavanagh says it was humbling to be surrounded with other members of the order at the historic Rideau Hall for the ceremony, and to be included with people that he considers to be of the highest honour and calibre was more than he could ask for.

Kavanagh will be spending Remembrance Day in Ottawa with his wife and is attending the ceremony at the War Memorial.

He says he's excited to see how Ottawa does Remembrance Day.

He says he and his wife are going to take in the experience of a large-scale Remembrance Day ceremony with other veterans, and although he's seen the Ottawa Remembrance Day Ceremony on TV for years he says he's proud that this year he can be a part of it.
