We regret to advise of the death of Sapper John A Gilchrist (Ret'd) of Bancoft ON, on 7 April 2003 at the age of 72 years.

John was born in Downsview ON. His father was killed in Normandy in July 1944 and is buried in Beny-sur-Mer Canadian War Cemetery. John served in the Royal Canadian Engineers during the Korean War. We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Ernest Duhaime (Ret’d) of Espanola, ON on 5 April 2003 .

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer First Class Rolf Kaare Berg (Ret’d) on 4 April 2003 at the age of 83 in Calgary, AB.

Rolf was born in Claresholm, AB in 1919. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers early in the Second World War and was posted overseas to join the 4^th Field (Air) Survey Company in 1942. Following the war, he was assigned to the United Kingdom Photo Air Survey Liaison Group to study advanced mapping methods and later he trained Royal Engineer personnel in Multiplex operations. Repatriated to Canada in June 1946, he was assigned to Multiplex Section of the Geographical Section of the of the General Staff at Army Headquarters. Rolf retired with the rank of Warrant Officer First Class in 1953 to take up a partnership in a mapping firm in Calgary from which he retired in 1984. He was an active member of the Southwest Seniors Community in Calgary and a long-standing member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 285.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta. A Memorial Service will be held at Jacques Funeral Home in Calgary on 10 April 2003.^{khMay2016}

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Pierre Minier, CD (Ret’d) at his home in Loretteville QC on 8 April 2003 at the age of 56.

Pierre served 27 years in the Canadian Forces as a Field Engineer with most of his career spent in 5^ème Escadron du Génie de combat/5^ème Régiment du Génie de combat. 

Visitation will be held at the Lépine Cloutier Funeral Home, 9255l’Ormière Boulevard, Neufchâtel QC on 16 April at noon followed by a religious service at St-Ambroise-de-la-Jeune-Lorette Church, 277Racine Street, Loretteville. We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Pierre Emile Joseph “Pete” Genereux CD (Ret’d) on 31 March 2023 in Comox BC at age 65 after his battle with cancer. 

Pete was born in St. Paul AB and served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 30 years – first as a Combat Engineer and then as a Carpenter.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on 30 April 2023 at the Comox Legion { 1825 Comox Avenue, Comox, BC}. No flowers by request but donations can be made to the following charities in his honour: Canadian Cancer Society/ BC Cancer Foundation, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Robert Eldon “Bob” Dean (Ret’d) peacefully at the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga, ON on 30 March 2003 in his 85^th year.

Bob was born in Toronto ON.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Prince of Wales Rangers (Militia) from 1939 to July 1942.  He then joined the Active Force in 1942 and served overseas until August 1945 with the 6^th Canadian Division with the Royal Canadian Signals Corps.

After the war, Bob rejoined the Army with the Royal Canadian Engineers and served with 1 Field Engineer Regiment and 2 Field Squadron in Vedder Crossing BC, before transferring to the Army Survey Establishment in 1957.  He trained as a multiplex operator, photogrammetrist and map compiler.  Bob took his release from the Canadian Forces in 1966 but rejoined the Army Survey Establishment as a civilian where he worked on quality control and as a Cartography Compiler and where he received a Suggestion Award on “redrawing points to be used on plastic”.  He took his final retirement in 1982 and moved to Toronto.

Visitation will be at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Road, Nepean ON on 1 April.  Funeral Service will be held in the chapel on 2 April with interment at Capital Memorial Gardens, Prince of Wales Drive, Ottawa.  Donations may be made to the Lung Association or the Canadian Hard of Hearing Society.  ^{{gdJul2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper George Alvin “Barney” Carmichael (Ret’d) of Ladysmith, BC on 27 March 2003 at the age of 80 years.

George was born in Ladysmith. He was a veteran of the Second World War who served overseas in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #171 in Ladysmith as well as the British Columbia Wildlife Federation.

We regret to advise of the passing of Captain William McKenzie Gilchrist (Ret'd) of Ottawa ON, on 22 March 2003 at the age of 93 years.

William was born in Weyburn SK. He graduated from Queen's University and served as an officer in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1941 until 1945. After the war, William worked in the uranium mining industry. During his career, he was President and Chairman of Eldorado Nuclear and its subsidiary company Eldorado Aviation, President of Northern Transportation, Governor of the Arctic Institute of North America, President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, President of the Canadian Nuclear Association, and a Member of the Atomic Energy Control Board.

Among Mr. Gilchrist's many honours was the Massey Medal of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, presented by the Governor-General of Canada, for his outstanding contributions to the development of Canada's north, that have combined to advance geographical knowledge. Mr. Gilchrist also received the Camsell Award of the Royal Camnadian Geographical Society, the Confederation Medal and the Queen's Silver Jubilee Medal. He was a member of the Rideau Club, the Engineers' Club and Royal Ottawa Golf Club.

A funeral service was held on 31 March 2003, at Dominion-Chalmers United Church in Ottawa, ON. A reception followed in the Sir John A. Macdonald Room at the Rideau Club. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Earl “Ziggy” Baillie on 18 March 2003 in Orillia, ON in his 85^th year.

Ziggy was a WW II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.   He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #34 in Orillia.

Albert grew up in the Cadomin area of Alberta’s Coal Branch.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion.

We regret to advise of the death of Sylvester Joseph “Syl” Pitts at home in Hope, BC on 8 March 2003 at the age of 84 years.

Syl was born in New Glasgow, N.S.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps and saw action in France and Germany.  After the war, he joined the Permanent Force with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  Syl eventually transferred to the Cook trade and retired from the army in Chilliwack in 1969.  He and his family relocated to Hope, BC where he worked at Ryan's Restaurant and the Coquihalla Camp Site.

We regret to advise of the death of Gerald “Gerry” Finn at the Ottawa General Hospital on 8 March 2003 at the age of 83 years.  Gerry served in the Canadian Army Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers for 33 years.

We regret to advise of the death of John Alexander “Jack” Hall on 6 March 2003 at the Civic Hospital in Ottawa, ON.

Jack was born in Ottawa in 1921. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers in January 1940 and participated in the D-Day invasion at Juno Beach. He served in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. After the war he worked at the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as a draftsman before joining the Department of National Defence Army Survey Establishment in 1958 as a Supervising Draftsman. He continued to serve with this Establishment until his retirement in 1986.

Jack was a member of the Defenders Masonic Lodge. Visitation will be at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on 10 March. Service will be held in the Chapel on 11 March. Donations may be made to the Dialysis Unit of the Ottawa Hospital. ^{{gdNov2015kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Eugene Francis “Gene” Doucet, CD (Ret'd) of Lower Sackville, NS on 5 March 2003 at the age of 71 years.

Gene was born in Bathurst, NB and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1951 at the Mapping and Charting Establishment in Ottawa, ON as a lithographer and served for 15 years. Promoted to Sergeant in 1962, he retired from the Canadian Forces in 1965 and joined the Federal Government Map Office. Gene was transferred to Halifax, NS in 1978 and promoted to Federal Chief of Printing for Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Ill health forced him to retire in 1985.  Gene was always active in the community.  He was awarded Rotarian of the year in 1972 for community service. Gene was also vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #33, Aylmer, QC.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper John Coventry Brown (Ret'd) in Glace Bay Health Care Complex in Glace Bay, NS on 4 March 2003 at the age of 80 years.

John was born in Glace Bay and was a resident of Ben Eoin, NS.  He enlisted in 1941 and served in the Second World War overseas with the 6^th Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers. He landed in France on D-Day. 

After demobilisation, being a carpenter by trade, he returned to carpentry, eventually gaining employment as a carpenter with the Department of National Defence at the Canadian Forces Station Sydney NS.  John was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion John Croak VC Memorial Branch #3 in Glace Bay.   He was a member of St. Anne's Parish in Glace Bay as well as St. Mary's Parish in Big Pond, NS.

Visitation will take place on 9 March from 2:00 - 4:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 PM at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 0n 10 March at 10:00 AM at St. Anne's Church, Glace Bay.  Interment in the parish cemetery at a later date.  Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. ^{{gdMar2017dc} [zpp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Harry Gaye Soone (Ret’d) at the Mount St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver BC on 2 March 2003 at the age of 84.

Harry was born in Vancouver.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1944 to 1947 in Ottawa.  He was a Past Executive and 36-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Vancouver Branch #177.

We regret to advise the death of Arthur Carl Ellis at Providence Place in Moose Jaw, SK on 2 March 2003 at the age of 86 years.

Carl was born and raised in Moose Jaw. Before the war he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railways (CPR) but was an accomplished musician.  In 1939, he was awarded the Associate of the Toronto School of Music diploma for piano as a solo performer. He enlisted for WW II in 1942 and served in the Canadian Army between 1942 and 1946 as a clarinettist in the Royal Canadian Engineers Band touring England, Italy and Northwest Europe. After the war, he returned to the CPR, retiring in 1979 after a 40-year career as a conductor.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Church of Our Lady in Moose Jaw on 6 March at 2:00 PM. with interment in the Rosedale Cemetery in Moose Jaw.  Memorial donations may be made to Providence Place. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper George Henry “Wilfred” Biggs (Ret’d) in the New Halifax Infirmary, Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Halifax, NS on 26 February 2003 at the age of 87 years.

Wilfred was born in Glace Bay, NS.  He was a Second World War veteran who served with the 4^th Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers seeing action in the Italian Campaign and then re-deploying to join the Allied Advance during the Northwest Europe Campaign.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #162 in Lower Saskville, NS as well as a member of the Saskville Masonic Lodge 137.  He had worked at the Halifax Club in Halifax for many years until his retirement.

Visitation will be in Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, Halifax on 1 March 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00PM with a Legion service at 7:00 PM followed by a Masonic Lodge service at 7:30 PM.  A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM the following day.  Burial to follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lower Sackville. We regret to advise of the death of Frederick William Sibley at Victoria General Hospital in Christchurch, England on 21 February 2003 in his 92^nd year.

Fred was a veteran of the Second World War and served 21 years in the Royal Engineers, retiring in 1951. He then immigrated to Canada with his family and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers for another 15 years before retiring again in 1966. After retirement, he realised a long-time ambition to serve as a Minister of the United Church of Canada. He served in Edgerton, AB for three years before retiring to Salt Spring Island, BC and eventually moving to Sidney, BC in 1983. He was an active Freemason, being a Charter Junior Warden, later Master of Griesbach Lodge, Edmonton, AB; a Past Master of Admiral Lodge, Salt Spring Island; Past Grand Steward and Past District Deputy Grandmaster of the Grand Lodge of BC; and a 32-year Scottish Rite Freemason.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Gregory W. “Bud” Guscott (Ret'd) on 18 February 2003 at the North Bay General Hospital in his 82^nd year.

Bud was born in Brantford On. He was a Royal Canadian Engineers veteran who served overseas during the Second World War. On his return from the war, Bud worked in various sales positions, eventually managing Owl-Lite Equipment and James North Ltd., and retiring from Christa Beef Distributors. Bud was also a Life Member of Branch #23 of the Royal Canadian Legion in North Bay and had recently received his pin marking fifty-five years of Legion membership.

Family will receive friends at the McGuinty Funeral Home in North Bay and a funeral service will be conducted in the Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation will take place at the Forest Lawn Crematorium. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association would be gratefully acknowledged by the family. 

We regret to advise of the death of Master Warrant Officer (Ret'd) Freddie Gorman Silver who died as a result of a heavy equipment mishap on 12 February 2003 while at his camp in Lake Pleasant, Nova Scotia.

Freddie was a retired Master Warrant Officer who had served in the Canadian Navy and Air Force as well as with 143 Airfield Engineering Flight, Bridgewater.

A funeral will be held on 16 February in St. John in the Wilderness Anglican Church, New Germany. A reception for family and friends will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Willard Joseph Amero (Ret’d) at the Queen Elizabeth II Halifax, NS Infirmary, on 10 February 2003 at the age of 79 years.

Willard was born in Plympton, NS.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he worked a number of years for Digby Pines Golf Resort and Spa in Digby, NS and later for the Canadian Forces Base Cornwallis, in Clementsport, NS from where he retired in 1984. Willard was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Digby Branch #20.

Visitation will take place on 12 February 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  A Royal Canadian Legion tribute service will take place at 7:30 PM.  Prayers will follow at 8:00 PM, all in Jayne's Funeral Home, 7 Birch Street, Digby.   The funeral service will be held on 13 February at 11:00 AM at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, Plympton, where he was a member.  Willard will be put to rest in the parish cemetery. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Robert George "Bob" Fells (Ret’d) of Davidson, SK at Saskatoon General Hospital on 10 February 2003 at the age of 83 years.

Robert was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the 8^th Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers. After marrying his Yorkshire bride, Jean in November 1945, he spent another month in England before returning home to Canada. Jean followed on a separate ship and the two trekked back to Bob's home where they raised three children and spent a lifetime of farming on this father's operation north of Ginivia, SK. Bob was a longtime member of the Davidson branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

In 2024, Jean was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the last awarded by the Saskatchewan government, for contributions to the country, the province, and particularly to her community. Jean was 96 when the medal was awarded.

A Celebration of Robert's Life Funeral Service will be held at Christ Church Anglican in Saskatoon on 23 April 2003 at 2:00 p.m. and at All Saints Anglican Church in Davidson. SK on Thursday 24 April at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in the family plot in Davidson Cemetery.

We regret to advise of the peaceful death of William “Bill” Nesbit Hay at the Lions Gate Hospital, in Vancouver, BC on 4 February 2003.

Bill was born in Newcastle, Upon Tyne, England in 1914 and immigrated to Canada in 1928. He served in WWII in the 20^th Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers.

We regret to advise of the death of Roland Wedgewood Burns at home in Barss Corner, NS on 30 January 2003 at the age of 87 years. 

Roland worked in the forestry industry for the Mersey Paper Company in Nova Scotia before joining the Army in 1941.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers in England and Northwest Europe.  Following demobilisation, he returned to Mersey Paper Company before moving to Ontario to pick tobacco and to the USA to pick apples.  He returned to Mercy Paper as a night watchman where he worked until his retirement in 1980. 

There will be no service. A private burial of ashes will take place at Indian Brook Cemetery in Barss Corner.  Donation may be made to the Parkinson Society of Canada, Maritime Region, the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia or a charity of one’s choice. ^{{gdMar2017dc} [zsd, zpi]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Brenton Gertz, CD who died suddenly on 29 January 2003 while working in Bosnia in his civilian job with ATCO Frontec.  Brenton served as a Sapper in the Regular Force for 20 years and served with 8 Field Engineer Regiment in the Reserve Force after his retirement.

Sergeant Brent Gertz started his military career in 1973 in the Militia with 8 Field Engineer Regiment, Edmonton, AB. In the early 1970s he served on the UN Emergency Force Middle East as one of the first Reservists to support our UN missions. Brenton joined the Regular Force as a Sapper in 1978, initially serving with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, Chilliwack. For the period 1980 - 1988, he served with 4 Combat Engineer Regiment in Lahr Germany where he became an Armoured Engineer operator - a specialty that he remained with for the rest of his Regular Force career. He left Germany as a Master Corporal and was posted Camp Gagetown, NB where he served in both the Armour School and 22 Field Squadron and was promoted to Sergeant in 1989. In 1992 he was transferred to the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, Chilliwack and then was posted to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment as it was relocated to Edmonton. While with 1 CER, he served on Op Palladium Roto 1 with the Lord Strathcona's Horse Battle Group.

Brent retired from the Regular Force in 1998 with 20 years of service and immediately joined the Primary Reserve as a member of 8 Field Engineer Regiment. After retiring from the Regular Force, Brenton worked with ATCO Frontec in overseas locations.

The funeral service was held at the South Side Memorial Chapel in Edmonton on 4 February with a grave site interment following at South Haven Cemetery. A reception followed in the Senior Non-Commissioned Officers' Mess at the LCol P.L. Debney Armoury, 8403 Roper Road, Edmonton.

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer Frédérick A. G. “Fred” Winterson, CD (Ret’d) in the Laval University Medical Centre in Quebec City, QC on 28 January 2003 at the age of 58 years.

Fred had a 28-year career in the Army starting in the infantry with the Royal 22^e Régiment for six years before transferring to the Military Engineers as a Combat Engineer in 1970.  He served most of his career in Valcartier, QC and retired in 1992.

Visitation will take place at the Sylvio Marceau Funeral Home, 1460 Notre Dame Street, Ancienne-Lorette, QC on 31 January from 2:00 to 5:00 PM, 7:00 to 10:00 PM and on 1 February 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM at the Chalmers Wesley Church, 78 Ste-Ursule Street, Quebec City.  Burial will take place at the Mont-Hermon Cemetery, Quebec City.  Donations may be made to the MIRA Foundation for the training of dogs for the blind, 2700 Jean-Perrin Street, Quebec City.  ^{{gdMar2017dc}  [zsd, zcc, zpi, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant John Robert "Bob" Wainwright, (Ret'd) in Ottawa ON, on 23 January 2003 in his 87^th year.

Bob was a WW II veteran of 3^rd Field Company Royal Canadian Engineers who deployed overseas as a Sapper with the Advance Party in December 1939. He served in Spitzbergen, Sicily, and Italy before the Company was redeployed to join the Allied advance in Northwest Europe.  In August 1948, Bob joined the Army Survey Establishment in Ottawa as a Photogrammetrist and served until November 1964.   After his retirement, he went to work for the City of Ottawa Recreation and Parks Department.

Bob was the editor of the first Newsletter produced by the Mappers Club and on retirement from the military became its Vice-President.  He was a long-time Director of Alexander (The Vets) Community Centre in Ottawa; member of the Defenders Lodge Freemasons; member of Scottish Rite 33^rd Degree and member of the Tunis Temple Shriners.

Visitations will be at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair&McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue Ottawa on 25 January followed by the service in the Chapel.  Interment will be in Capital Memorial Gardens, Ottawa.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. ^{{gdFeb2016kh} [zsp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Peter Albert Frejek of Winnipeg, MB on 23 January 2003 at the age of 89 years.

Peter was born in Tisdale, SK. He began working at the age of 13 breaking horses. He worked diligently at many different jobs over his lifetime, retiring as a lab attendant from the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre in 1976. 

Peter was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War and served in Europe.  He was a member of Brooklands and Weston Senior Citizen's Centres, the Canadian Order of Forresters and of the Royal Canadian Legion Brooklands & Weston Branch #2 for over 50 years.

A service of praise and thanksgiving to celebrate Peter's life will be held on 29 January at The Meeting Place, 139 Smith Street in Winnipeg,  A viewing will be held at 9:30 AM.  Donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.  The family also requests that a random act of kindness be done in Peter's memory.

We regret to advise of the death of Gordon Nelson Cossey peacefully in the Delta BC Hospital on 16 January 2003 at the age of 85.

Gordon was born in Keewatin, ON and learned carpentry from his father.  He served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Italy and Holland.  After demobilization he returned to Ontario before re-locating his family to British Columbia.  In 1952 he rejoined the Engineers and served at various bases in Canada and Germany until 1966 when he retired from the army and moved to Calgary to join the Federal Department of Supply and Services.  Shortly thereafter he changed employment joining the Federal Department of Health and Welfare becoming Property Manager of Northern Region Medical Services.  He then moved to Pacific Region (Vancouver BC) in the same capacity until retiring in 1983.

A Celebration of Gordon's life will be held on 22 January at the Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner, BC.  Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Delta Hospital Foundation.  ^{{gdSep2016kh}}

We regret to advise that Warrant Officer Second Class K.A. Carl "Bubbles" Hollinger passed away on 14 January 2003

Carl was born in Montreal in 1915. He enlisted in June 1940 and was taken on strength with Survey Troop, 14^th Fd Regt, RCA in August 1942. We transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers and served as a pressman with 3^rd Fd (Repro) Svy Coy, RCE overseas.

Carl was one of four brothers who served in survey overseas. After the war, he joined the Army Survey Establishment as a lithographer. He retired on a medical discharge in June 1965 as WOII to a farm near Stittsville ON. Carl also became an auctioneer and his name was often heard on CBC Ottawa Radio to be looking after an auction in the Ottawa Valley.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 17, 2003, in the Chapel of Theo Brunet and Sons Funeral Home in Rockland, ON. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Rockland St-Joseph Nursing Home, 1615 Laurier Street, K4K 1C8 would be most appreciated.

We regret to advise of the death of Alexander Lauder “Sandy” Crozier in White Rock BC on 11 January 2003 at the age of 90,

Sandy was born in Winnipeg.  After working at various jobs in the 1930s, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and served in England, Holland and Germany.  After demobilization, he moved to Vancouver BC where he joined the Department of Veteran Affairs and worked there until his retirement in 1973.  In retirement he operated a hobby farm in Armstrong BC until 1987.  This was followed by moves to Sardis BC and eventually to White Rock.

We regret to advise the death of Raymond Henry Bucholz on 10 January, 2003 in New Westminster, BC.

Raymond was born in London, England in 1920 and served in WWII in the Royal Canadian Engineers. After the war he worked for BC Electric and Hydro for 36 years, starting as a conductor on the intercity electric railway trains (interurbans) and then as a bus driver. He was a 30-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #2 in New Westminster as well as a member of the BC Power Pioneers Association.

A Funeral Service will be held 15 January in the Columbia-Bowell Chapel, 219-6th Street, New Westminster. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetic Association or Heart Fund. ^{{gdAug2015kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Bernard “Bern” Greaves Watts, suddenly, at Lions Gate Hospital in Vancouver, BC on 7 January 2003 at the age of 80.

Bern was born in Winnipeg, MB.  He joined the Canadian Army and was a WW II veteran who served in Europe with the Royal Canadian Artillery and Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and worked for BC Hydro until retirement.  He was an active member of the Vancouver Senior’s Centre and the S.P.C.A., in West Vancouver.

By request, there will be no funeral.   A private gathering will take place at his home on 14 January from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. for close friends. Donations may be made to the S.P.C.A., Salvation Army or the Cancer Society.  ^{{gdDec2016kh} [ zpp, zsd, zcc}}

We regret to advise of the death of Graham Burril at the age of 86 years.

Graham was born in Yarmouth, NS and was a veteran of the Second World War. He served in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1937 until he retired in 1974.

We regret to announce the death of Captain Jack Rouhiainen (Retired) on 28 December 2002.

Jack was a long-time member of 44^th Field Engineer Squadron in Trail, BC who was involved with the unit for 25 years. He served with the unit in various capacities, retiring as Deputy Commanding Officer. Jack worked with Cominco for 37 years, retiring in February 2001. Jack was very active in the Trail Branch of the Military Engineers Association of Canada (MEAC) and represented his branch at numerous MEAC meetings and functions. Most recently, Jack continued his service to the CME when he served as Secretary-Treasurer of the 44^th Field Engineer Squadron Association and was instrumental in the unit's 50^th Anniversary Celebration.

A service will be held at the Trail Alliance Church on Friday 3 January at 11:00 AM. Members of 44^th Field Engineer Squadron will form a guard of honour. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Leslie “Les” Alan Brown (Ret’d) peacefully on 27 December 2002 at the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre in Ottawa, ON at the age of 85 years.

Les, formerly of Carrying Place, ON, was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, Les went into teaching.  He had a long career and his final teaching assignment was with the Trenton High School, Trenton ON.  Les was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #110 in Trenton.

Visitation will be at the Rushnell Funeral Centre, 60 Division St., Trenton on 30 December from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.  Service in the Chapel on 31 December at 1 PM.  Donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. ^{{gdMar2017dc} [zsd, zpp]}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Gordon Glover Ramsay (Ret’d) at the Laurentian Site of the Sudbury ON Regional Hospital on 24 December 2002 at the age of 81 years.

Gordon was born in Summerside, PE and was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 until 1946. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Northwest Europe. After the war Gordon worked as a trainman at International Nickel Company (INCO) in Sudbury for 42 years, retiring in 1980.  Gordon was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #76, Sudbury.

A memorial service will be held in the Lougheed Funeral Home , 252 Regent St. at Hazel Street on 28 December at 1:00 PM.  Cremation at the Park Lawn Crematorium with burial to follow at the Park Lawn Cemetery In Sudbury. ^{{dcDec2017gd} [zsd, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the sudden death of RCMP Constable Vernon Myles Genaille on 22 December 2002.

Vernon was a former Field Engineer who undertook his Recruit Training in 1970 and was posted to 3 Field Squadron in 1971 upon completion of his Field Engineer basic training. A tour in 4 Combat Engineer Regiment followed and Vernon remustered to Administrative Clerk in the 1980s and later instructed as a Sergeant in CFB Borden. After 20 years of service, he left the Canadian Forces for a career in the RCMP.

Vern was the recipient of the RCMP's Commissioner's Commendation Awards for Bravery. Vern was very interested in Army Cadets and worked with 1725 Cadet Corps RCE in Chilliwack and was instrumental in forming The Seabird Island Cadet Corps in the Agassiz, BC.

We regret to advise of the death of Donald Mark “Don” Shaw in Chilliwack, BC on 22 December 2002 at the age of 70 years.

Don was born in Port Williams, NS and came to Chilliwack when he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers. After leaving the Army he was employed by the Department of Corrections, was active in the Royal Westminster Regiment, the Auxiliary Police, and did community volunteer work until losing his sight in 1981.  Despite this, Don remained active in the Mount Cheam Lions Club and the Chilliwack Amateur Radio Club.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Leah Jennine Oliver in a vehicle accident in Rogers Pass near Revelstoke BC on 15 December 2002 at the age of 21.  Her friend and companion Sapper Stephen Alexander Oliver (not related) was also killed in the same accident.  Both were members of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Edmonton AB.

Leah was born in New Westminster BC but lived the greater part of her life in Kamloops BC.  She attended David Thompson Elementary, John Peterson Secondary School and graduated from Kamloops Senior Secondary.  In 1999, she joined the Canadian Forces as a Reserve Infantry soldier with the Rocky Mountain Rangers in Kamloops.  She transferred to the Regular Force in 2001 as a Combat Engineer and trained at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Gagetown NB.  On completion of her training, she was posted to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment.  Leah was an athletic person who excelled in numerous sports especially wrestling where she placed at the provincial and national levels.  She had recently completed the demanding combat diver’s preliminary course.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Stephen Alexander Oliver in a vehicle accident while travelling through Rogers Pass near Revelstoke BC on 15 December 2002 at the age of 21.  His friend and companion Sapper Leah Jennine Oliver (not related) was also killed in the same accident.  Both were members of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Edmonton AB.

Stephen was born in Reading, Berkshire, England and immigrated to Canada at the age of one.  He grew up in Calgary AB where he attended Lord Beaverbrook High School graduating in 1999.  During his high school years, Stephen joined the King’s Own Calgary Regiment, a Reserve Force Armoured Regiment, and, after graduation, served a seven month operational tour in Bosnia with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry.  In 2001 Stephen transferred to the Regular Force as a Combat Engineer and trained at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering in Gagetown NB.  On completion of his training he was posted to 1 Combat Engineer Regiment.  Stephen was active in sports and challenged himself by competing in demanding events such as the Kananaskis Death Race and the Mountain Man Challenge.

A funeral service for Stephen will be held on 19 December at the McInnis & Holloway’s Fish Creek Chapel, 4441 Bannister Road S.E., Calgary.   Messages of sympathy may be made to condolences@mcinnisandholloway.com.  Donations may be made to the Calgary Humane Society (SPCA), 1323 - 36 Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 6T6. We regret to advise of the death of Karl Waserman peacefully at his home in Montreal, QC on 15 December 2002 in his 89^th year. 

Karl was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he established and was the former owner of Waserman Furs in Ottawa.   He was proud of his military service and loved to share his experiences with his children and grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue in Ottawa on 16 December.  Shiva will be held in Montreal commencing the afternoon of 18 December.  Donations may be made to the Gladstone Fund in Ottawa and Na'amat in Montreal.  ^{{gdNov2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Ralph N. Brandon (Ret’d) of Claresholm, AB on 11 December 2002 at the age of 85 years.

Ralph was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 41 in Claresholm.

Nous regrettons de vous annoncer le décès du sergent Marc Jutras,  le 9 décembre 2002 à l'hôpital du Haut-Richelieu à St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC, à l’âge de 37 ans. Marc était instructeur à l'École de Leadership et des Recrues des Forces canadiennes (ÉLRFC) à la Garnison St-Jean.
Marc s’est joint aux Forces canadiennes en 1987 et après sa formation en génie de campagne à l’École du génie militaire des Forces canadiennes à la BFC Chilliwack, C.-B, il a été muté au 5^e Régiment du génie de combat (5^e RGC) à Valcartier, QC. En 1991, il changea de métier pour devenir opérateur d'équipement lourd et en 1993, il participa à une mission humanitaire en ex-Yougoslavie.  De 1994 à 1996, il fut muté à la Base des Forces canadiennes Shilo, MB et, par la suite, il est revenu au 5e RGC pour un deuxième tour de 1996 à 2001. Pendant sa deuxième mutation au 5^e RGC, il a été promu sergent en janvier 1999. En 2001, il était transféré à l`ÉLRFC.

We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer John William Forsyth Hall, CD (Ret’d) peacefully at home on 9 December 2002 in Calabogie, ON at the age of 76 years.

John was born in Quebec City, QC.  He served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve as an Able Seaman from 1944 - 1946.  In October 1951 he re-enlisted and served in the Korean War with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry as a rifleman.  In 1954 John transferred to the Army Survey Establishment for training as a topographic surveyor.  He served on several field parties: Eskimo Lakes, NT; Dease Lake, BC; and Fort Churchill, MB.  He served on loan to Canadian International Development Agency as a survey instructor in Nigeria as well as an exchange posting to the United Kingdom from 1968 - 1971. John retired in July 1974.  He was an expert cross-country skier and was associated with the Canadian Army Ski Team as a racer and coach for many years.

A Memorial Service will be held on 14 December 14 2:30 PM in the St. Andrew's United Church Hall, 1044 Madawaska Street, in Calabogie. Donations may be made to the Renfrew, ON Victoria Hospital.
