Pte Shane Fair

We regret to advise of the off-duty drowning death of Private Shane Fair on 15 May 2009. Shane was a university student and Class A reservist serving with 32 Combat Engineer Regiment in Toronto.

Honorary Colonel Richard “Dick” Morden Mitchell (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Honorary Colonel Richard “Dick” Morden Mitchell (Ret’d) peacefully on 15 May 2009 in his 98th year. 

Dick was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers overseas (1939 -1945) in the United Kingdom, North Africa, Italy and North West Europe.  He landed in Sicily in November 1943 as Commanding Officer of the 9th Field Park Company and fought in both the Sicilian and Italian Campaigns.  After the Italian Campaign Dick - then in command of 14th Field Company - proceeded to Northwest Europe.  Following the war Dick commanded the 2nd Field Engineer Regiment in Toronto (1949 - 1952) and later was its Honorary Colonel.

Dick was a graduate of Queen's University, Kingston ON with a B.Sc. in 1935 and from Harvard University with a Masters in Business Administration in 1948.  Throughout his career, he held management positions with several large Toronto-based companies including Carrier Engineering, Dunham-Bush and Lake Ontario Cement.  He was a long-time member of St. George's on-the-Hill Anglican Church and Weston Golf Club, both in Toronto.

Visitation will be at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West on 19 May.  Funeral service will be held at St. George's on-the-Hill Anglican Church, 4600 Dundas Street West, Etobicoke ON on20May.   Interment to take place at St. George's Churchyard.  Donations may be made to the charity of one’s choice. {gdJun2016kh}

Charles “Charlie” Owen Pettifer

We regret to advise of the death of Charles “Charlie” Owen Pettifer in Victoria BC on 13 May 2009 in his 80th year. 

Charlie was born in Birmingham, England and served in the British Army as a musician in The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.  He immigrated to Canada and settled in Chilliwack BC.  He joined the Canadian Military as a musician and played with the Band of the Royal Canadian Engineers and the Royal Canadian Navy Naden Bands. 

A celebration of life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion, Trafalgar Pro Patria Branch # 292, 411 Gorge Road, Victoria on 23 May.  Donations may be made to the Victoria Hospice, 1952 Bay St, Victoria. {gdJun2016kh}

Spr Alvin Joseph Doiron, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Alvin Joseph Doiron, CD (Ret’d) peacefully on 11 May 2009 at McNally House, Grimsby ON at the age of 79 years.

Alvin served with the Canadian Military Engineers for some 22 years in our field squadrons and much of it being in the Motor Transport Section. He served much of his career with 1 Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers in Germany (1955 - 57) and in Petawawa, ON from where he retired. Al was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Port Hope, ON Branch #30.  

The family will receive friends at the Tallman Funeral Home 4998 King St., Beamsville on Thursday 2-4 and 7-8:30. A Legion funeral service will be held on Friday, May 15 at 11:00 in the Chapel. Donations to the McNally House, Grimbsy would be appreciated by the family {gdMay2019dc} [zpp, zcc]

Group Captain Kenneth Alexander McLeod (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of RCAF Group Captain Kenneth Alexander McLeod ( Ret'd) who died peacefully on 8 May 2009.

Ken served as Navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WW II until 1945. After the war he resumed his studies at the University of Manitoba and graduated in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Ken rejoined the RCAF in 1948 in the Construction Engineering Branch and retired in 1964 as a Group Captain. He then pursued a Public Service career at National Defence Headquarters. Ken's career at NDHQ included appointments as Director General of Engineering and Construction, Director General Quartering, Director General Construction and Director General of Properties and Utilities.

Friends and family are invited to visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair and McGarry, 150 Woodroffe, Ave. At Richmond Rd. 10 May from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. A Funeral Service to celebrate Ken's life will be held in the Chapel on Monday, 11 May 2009 at 1:00 pm. Spr Harold Edwin Walker (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Harold Edwin Walker (Ret'd) of Fergus, ON on 7 May 2009 in his 88th year.

Harold was born in Mount Forest ON and was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Fergus Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion.

A Royal Canadian Legion service will be held at 1845 hrs on Sunday, 10 May 2009 at the Chapel of the Graham Giddy Funeral Home in Fergus. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Monday, 11 May 2009 at 1100 hrs in the funeral home chapel. Harold will be interred in the Belsyde Cemetery in Fergus. Donations in memory can be made to the Groves Memorial Community Hospital- CT Fund, through the funeral home. 

BGen W.K. Lye, MBE, MiD, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Brigadier General William Kirby Lye, MBE, MiD, CD on 6 May 2009 in his 91st year.

BGen Lye was an RMC graduate who went overseas during the Second World War with 16th Field Company and was later Second-in-Command of 1st Field Company. In England, he was also Chief Instructor of the Engineer Reinforcement Unit. He was Mentioned in Despatches and appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his distinguished service in 1944 as Staff Officer Royal Engineers, Headquarters 2 Canadian Corps.

BGen Lye's post-war appointments include: Deputy Commander, Canadian Forces Base Units, Middle East (United Nations Emergency Force); Commander, Camp Chilliwack and Commandant, Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering; Commander Canadian Base Units (Europe); Commander, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island Area; Chief of Staff, Administration, at Headquarters Mobile Command; Senior Assistant Adjutant General and Directors General Ordnance Systems and Land Operations in Canadian Forces Headquarters. BGen Lye retired in 1973 after his assignment as Commandant Royal Military College, Kingston.

Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street, Ottawa on Monday, 11 May from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, 1230 Bank Street, Ottawa on Tuesday, 12 May at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Salvation Army would be appreciated.

Kenneth Oliver “Ken” Wick

We regret to advise of the death of Kenneth Oliver “Ken” Wick on 6 May 2009 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre in Thunder Bay, ON at the age of 72 years.

Ken was born on Thompson Island, Lake of the Woods, ON and lived there his first five years before moving to the Sunshine Valley near Nipigon, ON.  At the age of 16 he moved west and after working in the construction industry, He joined the Royal Canadian  Engineers in 1952 and served in the 57th Independent Field Squadron in Chilliwack, BC and 1 Airborne Troop in Calgary, AB. 

Ken left the army in 1956 and went to work as a forester for Ontario Hydro and later as a rigger at the Red Rock, ON paper mill.  He was very active in the Nipigon community holding membership in various committees as well as being an events’ organiser.  He was a member of the Lions Club, the Fall Fishing Festival Committee, the Nipigon Figure Skating Club and Elk’s Hockey as a coach and referee.  He was also an Elder of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Nipigon.  In 1993 Ken was awarded the Nipigon Citizen of the Year award.

Visitation will be held at the Epiphany Lutheran Church, 499 Dewe Avenue, Thunder Bay followed by a funeral service on 12 May at 11:00 AM.  Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice.   {gdApr2017dc}  [zsd, zpp]

Spr Ralph Joseph Landry (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Ralph Joseph Landry (Ret'd) on 2 May 2009.

Ralph was born in Petit de Grat, NS in 1923 and joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in Halifax in 1943. He took advanced training in Yarmouth, NS and then completed his training at Camp Petawawa, ON. Ralph participated in the D-Day invasion on 6 June 1944 and fought through Europe until VE Day. He was discharged in April 1946. He was a member of the Isle Madame Branch in Arichat NS.

A Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate the life of Ralph will be held at St. Joseph's Church in Petit De Grat with burial to follow in the Star of the Sea Cemetery.  with Rev. Memorial donations can be made to the Veteran's Comfort Fund or the ALS Society of Nova Scotia.

Robert “Bob” Charles Harrison

We regret to advise of the death of Robert “Bob” Charles Harrison peacefully on 1 May 2009 at Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga, in his 92nd year.

Bob fought in WW II with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the 16th Field Company of Montreal. He landed on Juno Beach on D-Day at H-Hour plus 1. He carried on into the liberation of Holland, fighting through to the Rhine into Germany.

Cremation has taken place. A private memorial will be held at a later time. If so desired donations may be made to the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, ON. {gdSep2015kh}

Spr Kurt Norton

We regret to advise that Sapper Kurt Norton passed away 30 April 2009 in Suffield at the age of 25.

Born in New Westminster, BC, Kurt enrolled in the Canadian Forces in August 2007. After completing his Combat Engineering trades training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, Kurt was posted to 1 Combat Engineering Regiment in September 2008. He was preparing for his first operational deployment on Task Force 3-09.

Viewing on 11 May from 1930-2000 hrs for the general public at Columbia Bowell Funeral Home, 219 6th Street New Westminster, BC (604) 521-4881. Funeral Service will be held Tuesday,12 May 2009 at 11:00am at St. Francis de Sales Church, 6610 Balmoral St., Burnaby, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Robert D. Ferris

We regret to advise of the death of Robert D. Ferris at the Sunnybrook Health Science Centre, Toronto, ON on 29 April 2009 in his 90th year.

Robert was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in 8th Field Squadron. 

Visitation will be at the Trull 'North Toronto' Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 2704 Yonge Street, on 1 May from 7-9 p.m.  A Funeral Service will be held on 2 May at Glenview Presbyterian Church, Glenview Avenue, at 11 o'clock. Interment to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Donations may be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario.    {gdOct2016kh}

Spr Mervyn Drew (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Mervyn Drew (Ret’d) at home in Ayres Cliff, QC on 29 April 2009 at the age of 89 years.

Drew was a veteran of the Royal Canadian Engineer who served in the Second World War with the 2nd Field Park Company that served in both the Italian and Northwest European Campaigns. He was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Ayer’s Cliff Branch #128,

The family will receive condolences on 3 May from 2:00 until 4:00 PM and again between 7:00  and 9:00 PM at the Cass Funeral Home in Ayer’s Cliff. The funeral service will be held on 4 May at 3:00 PM in the Beulah United Church. Sgt Gordon Leslie Croucher (Ret’d)

We regret to advise the death of Sergeant Gordon Leslie Croucher (Ret’d) at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC on 28 April 2009 at the age of 79 years.

Gordon was born in Windsor, ON and grew up in the Chatham, ON area. He joined the Militia in 1945 and transferred to the Regular Force in 1948.  He served in Korea with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry as a member of the 2nd Battalion and fought in the April 1951 Battle of Kapyong for which the unit received the United States Presidential Unit Citation.  After Korea, he transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers as a photographer and amongst his early assignments, he recorded the Royal visit of Princess Margret to Camp Chilliwack BC in 1958.  He also served a United Nations tour in Cyprus.

In later years, Gordon became a newspaper photographer.  After retiring, he moved first to Knouff Lake and later to Kamloops.  Gordon was a long time member of the Army, Navy, Air Force Veterans Association, Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 52 Kamloops and Korea Veterans Association.  He also belonged to the Heffley Creek Gun Club.

Cremation has taken place and a Memorial Service will be held on 30 May at 1:00 p.m. at the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, 285 Fortune Drive, Kamloops Funeral Home. {dcOct2017gd}[zsp]

Robert George Douglas

We regret to advise of the death of Robert George Douglas peacefully at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, AB on 20 April 2009 at 89 years of age.

George was born in Vermillion, Alberta where he spent his early years. He enlisted in the Army during the Second World War and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He demobilized in 1946 and returned to live and work in Edmonton.

A Funeral Service will be held on 30 April at Kirk United Church, 13535 - 122 Avenue, Edmonton. Interment to be held in the Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Roland William Frayling

We regret to advise of the death of Roland William Frayling of Kelowna, BC on 19 April 2009 at the age of 89 years.

Roland was born in Regina, SK and lived there for most of his life. He was a Royal Canadian Engineers veteran of the Second World War and a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #26 of Kelowna.  Roland is buried in the St. Andrew’s Anglican Churchyard in Kelowna.  {dcJan19gd} [zsd, zcc, zpp]

William “Bill” Kevol

We regret to advise of the death of William “Bill” Kevol peacefully in Calgary, AB on 14 April 2009 at the age of 88.

Bill was born in Ormiston SK.  He was a WW II veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 – 1946.  Following demobilization, he moved to Victoria BC and started his apprenticeship as a carpenter, where he worked for seventeen years.  In 1964 he moved to Calgary where he worked for the City of Calgary for sixteen years until his retirement in the Parks Department as a cabinet maker, building picnic tables and renovating the historic Deane House in Fort Calgary.

Funeral Services will be held at McInnis & Holloway’s Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W., on 4 May at 2:30 p.m.  Donations may be made to the Calgary Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Asthma Program at the Health Research Innovation Centre, 3330 Hospital Drive N.W., Calgary.  A memorial tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.  {gdNov2016kh}

Spr Edward H. “Dud” Davis (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Edward H. “Dud” Davis (Ret’d) of Whitney Pier, NS at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, NS on 2 April 2009 in his 84th year.

Dud was born in Sydney. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in Italy and Northwest Europe.  He was an active member of the Atlantic Sappers and attended many reunions over the years.

Dud worked for 42 years at the Sydney Steel Corporation and retired in 1982.  He was active in community activities throughout his life including being a founding member of the Whitney Pier Rink and the original Commanding Officer of Whitney Pier Air Cadet Squadron 587.  He was also a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Whitney Pier Branch #128 and served as President.

Visitation will tke place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 and 7:00 – 9:00 PM.   A funeral mass will be celebrated on 10:30 AM on 6 April at Holy Redeemer Church with interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.  Donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses. {dcMay2017gd} [zsd, zsp]

MCpl David E. Roberts (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the accidental death of Master Corporal David E. Roberts (Ret'd) on 9 March 2009 at the age of 54 as the result of fire on his property near the community of Smoky Lake, AB.

Born in Leamington, ON, David was raised in South Windsor and attended Vincent Massey Secondary School. He entered the military immediately after graduation. David served for 27 years with the Canadian Military Engineers, much of it as an Airborne Sapper with the Airborne Field Squadron and 2 Combat Engineer Regiment. His tours included Cyprus, Qatar during the first Gulf War, Bosnia and Somalia. David's last tour was with 1 Combat Engineer Regiment before his retirement eight years ago.

The family received friends on 4 April 2009 at the Windsor Chapel Funeral Home. There was a Memorial and Veteran's service under the auspices of the Windsor Veteran's Memorial Committee to celebrate Dave's life As your expression of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society (for Leukemia Research) would be greatly appreciated by the family.

John D’Angelo

We regret to advise of the death of John D’Angelo on 6 March 2009 at the Allendale Long Term Care in Milton, ON at the age of 91 years. 

John was a veteran of the Second World War who served overseas for six years with the Royal Canadian Engineers.

The family will receive friends at the J. Scott Early Funeral Home, 21 James St., Milton on 9 March from 7:00 – 9:00 PM including vigil prayers at 8:30 PM.  A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on 10 March at 10:00 AM from Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 139 Martin St., Milton. Keith "Chief" Miller

We regret to advise of the death of Keith Robert “Chief” Miller on 3 March 2009 at the Chilliwack General Hospital, Chilliwack BC, at the age of 69.

A celebration of life for Keith Miller will take place at the Vedder BC Royal Canadian Legion Branch #280 on 18 March. Donations may be made to the Fraser Canyon Hospice Society, 1275 – 7th Avenue, Hope BC or another hospice society of one's choice.{gdMar2016kh}

Spr Ross J. Wagg (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Ross J. Wagg (Ret'd) on March 2009.

Ross was a veteran of the Second World War. He enlisted in February 1941 in Toronto and was assigned to the Royal Canadian Engineers. Qualified as a Sapper, Pioneer and Driver Operator, he landed in Normandy on D-Day with the 6th Field Company. Ross served with that unit until the end of the war when he returned to Canada. He settled in Toronto and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. {dcMar17}[zsd, zcc, zpp]

WO Murray Lawrence Kennedy (Ret'd)

We regret to advise that Warrant Officer Murray "Moe" Lawrence Kennedy (Retd) died suddenly in hospital on 28 February 2009 at the age of 62.

"Moe" joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1964 and served in most of the Engineer field units: 22 Field Squadron, 4 Field Squadron, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment, and 1 Engineer Support unit. He joined the NDHQ/DCMEM staff in Ottawa in 1989 and retired in 1993. He then continued in this work with Water Purification equipment as a contractor until retiring in 2008.

Friends are invited to visit at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road at Aviation Parkway on Friday, 6 March 2009 from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Saturday, 7 March at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Beechwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

Sapper Charles Morris Crossman (Ret’d)

We regret to advise the death of Sapper Charles Morris Crossman (Ret’d) peacefully on 28 February 2009 at the Sault Area Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie ON in his 86th year.

Charles served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 25 in Sault Ste. Marie.

Visitation will take place at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre in Sault Ste. Marie on 3 March from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m.  A funeral service, including a Royal Canadian Legion memorial service, will be held at the Arthur Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on 4 March at 1:00 p.m. with interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Sault Ste. Spr Edward J. Abbott (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Edward J. Abbott (Ret’d) on 27 February 2009 in Winfield, AB at the age of 87 years.

Edward was a Second World War veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.  He was a Life member, Past President and Charter Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #236 in Winfield.

MWO John F. Gow, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death, after a lengthy illness, of Master Warrant Officer John Francis Gow, CD (Ret’d) in Chilliwack BC on 24 February 2009 at the age of 76.

John was born in Kingston ON and in 1948 at the age of 16 years joined the Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Engineers. After a 26-year career he retired with the rank of Master Warrant Officer. He was then employed by the Canadian Government, first with Transport Canada and then with Public Works, retiring in 1987 after 39 years of service to his country. John settled in Kelowna BC but in 2005 relocated to Chilliwack. He was an avid reader and history buff.

There will be no service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. {gdMar2016kh}

Capt Maynard Stanley Sutherland, BEM, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Maynard Stanley Sutherland BEM, CD (Ret'd), peacefully at home in Toronto on 21 February 2009.

Maynard was born in Halifax, NS. He joined the Non-Permanent Active Militia just prior to WWII and enlisted in the Canadian Army (Active) on 1 September 1939 with the Royal Canadian Artillery. He later transferred to the Parachute Battalion but, after qualifying as a paratrooper, he sustained an injury that made him unfit for further service as a parachutist. He subsequently transferred to the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers and was employed at No.6 Engineer Services and Works Company at Halifax, NS. Maynard served with distinction during his military career and received many awards including the British Empire Medal while at the rank of Staff Sergeant (Acting Warrant Officer Class II, Quartermaster-Sergeant). He retired from the Army in 1965 with the rank of Captain after serving twenty-seven years.

Following his retirement from the Army, Maynard spent the next twenty years employed as Director in the Works Department, City of Scarborough, ON retiring in 1985. He served as President, Ontario Chapter, American Public Works Association and as Director of Transportation, Scarborough Red Cross. A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady of Peace Roman Catholic Church, 3914 Bloor St. West, Toronto on 27 February 2009 with inurnment at Meadowvale Cemetery. Donald Ronald McKay

We regret to advise of the death of Donald Ronald McKay of St Peter’s NS on 17 February 2009 in Richmond Villa St Peter”s at the age of 97 years.

Donald was born in Kingsville NS and grew up in Inverness County. He started his working life in the mines of Quebec and Northern Ontario and when the war broke out, he joined the 1st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, he settled in Brantford ON where he worked for 3M Corporation. He later moved to Moncton NB and worked for the Canadian National Railway.  After he retired, he moved back to St. Peter's. 

Donald was a fluent Gaelic speaker and had vast knowledge of Scottish history, Scottish lore and most especially, family ancestry. He became a member of St. Peter's Parish and St. Anthony's Guild. He was a life membership in the CN Pensioner's Club. He belonged to the Clan MacKay Society and the Order of Good Cheer.

Visitation will be in St. Mary of the Angels Church in Glendale NS from 2:00 PM until the funeral at 3:00 PM 20 February.  Interment will be in St. Mary's of the Angels Cemetery in Glendale NS. Donations made to St. Mary of the Angels Parish Cemetery Fund will be appreciated. 
 

Lt Peter Charles Fuller (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant Peter Charles Fuller (Ret’d) in hospital in Weston, ON on 16 February 2009 in his 93rd year.

Peter was born in Tetraville, Montreal, QC.  He attended Montreal High School and was a graduate of McGill University in 1938 (Civil Engineering).  He was a WW II veteran who served overseas as a Lieutenant with the Royal Canadian Engineers 1942-1945, including involvement in D-Day.  He had a long career with Canadian Pacific Railways both before and after the war.  He was a dedicated volunteer dating back to his university days with the McGill Daily newspaper as a student, and later with the Lions Club, Anglican Houses and St. Philip's Anglican Church. He was a proud supporter of the Toronto Children's Chorus.

A memorial service will be held on 21 February at St. Philip's Anglican Church, 25 St. Philips Road, Weston at 1:00 p.m. Donations may be made to St. Philip's Anglican Church and McGill University. {gdNov2016kh}

Cpl Gerald Allan “Joe” Doak, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Corporal Gerald Allan “Joe” Doak, CD (Ret’d) peacefully in Ottawa, ON on 14 February 2009 at the age of 80.

Joe served with the Canadian Military Engineers. After leaving the army he worked for Canada Post.

Visitation will be at the St. Laurent Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 1200 Ogilvie Road on 18 February from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.  A funeral service will be held in the Chapel on 19 February at 12:30 p.m. with interment at the Canadian Forces National Military Cemetery Beechwood.  Donations may be made to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation.  {gdNov2016kh}

Capt Forrest Lynn Chapman (Ret'd)

We regret to advise that Captain Forrest Lynn Chapman (Ret'd) passed away peacefully on 9 February 2009 at his home in Agassiz after a 12-year battle with Parkinson's disease.

Forrest was born in Estevan, SK in 1929 and joined the Canadian Army with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in 1947. After a short period he left to pursue the carpentry trade and then joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1954. He served with the Engineers until 1989 in such locations as Germany, Egypt and Cyprus. After retirement he worked at CFB Chilliwack first as a carpenter and then as a building inspector, retiring in 1997.

A celebration of life was held at the Vedder Legion Branch 280 on 17 February 2009.

Spr Cecil George Dennie (Ret’d)

We regret to advise the death of Sapper Cecil George Dennie (Ret’d) peacefully at the Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on 2 February 2009 in his 87th year.

Cecil was a veteran of the Second World War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a 60 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #34 in Orillia.

Cremation has taken place. Spr Sean David Greenfield

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Sean David Greenfield in the Zhari district west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan on 31 January 2009. he was 25 years of age.

Sapper Greenfield was a Combat Engineer in 24 Field Engineer Squadron, 2 Combat Engineer Regiment, serving with the 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group. Sapper Greenfield was born in Pinawa, MB and grew up there. Petawawa, ON became his new hometown after the family moved there when his father began work at AECL's Chalk River Laboratories. After graduation from high school in Petawawa in 2001, Sean attended Fanshawe College of Applied Arts and Technology in London ON and graduated in 2005 in Graphic Design.

Sean joined the Canadian Forces in December 2005 and, after completing his military engineer training at the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, was posted to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment at CFB Petawawa in February 2007. While training for deployment, in 2007 he was selected for and completed Combat Diver training. Sean deployed on his first overseas tour with 24 Field Squadron in September 2008 as an Engineer Field Section Driver.

Visitation for family and close friends of Spr Greenfield will be at Malcolm, Deavitt and Binhammer Funeral Home at 141 Renfrew Street, Pembroke on Friday, 6 January 1900 to 2100 hrs. Dress is Service Dress with Ribbons or equivalent civilian attire. The Commander Land Forces Central Area will privately present the Memorial Crosses, Memorial Scroll and Memorial Bar at 1830 hrs before the visitation.. Funeral and Memorial Service will be at CFB Petawawa RC Chapel (St Francis of Assisi) Saturday, 7 February at 1100 hrs. Dress: Service Dress with Medals. Reception to follow at the Twin Rivers Golf Club next to the chapel. Interment will be Beechwood National Military Cemetery, Ottawa on Monday, 9 February at 1400 hrs. Sgt Arnold Benedict Culliton (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Arnold Benedict Culliton (Ret’d) on 31 January 2009 at the St, Catharines General Hospital in St. Catharines ON at the age of 95 years.

Arnold served in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Engineers from 1942 until 1946.  He was a member of the Masonic Seymour Lodge Branch No 277 in St. Catharines.  He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion H.T. Church Branch #24 in St. Catharines.

Visitation will take place at the Hulse & English Funeral Home & Chapel, 75 Church St. on 3 February from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m..  A funeral service will be held in the chapel on 4 February at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Victoria Lawn Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Niagara Peninsula Children's Centre or the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario in London, ON.   {dcOct2017gd} [zpp, zsd, zcc]

Spr Leonard Martin “Len” Espetveidt (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Leonard Martin “Len” Espetveidt (Ret’d) of Marwayne, AB on 30 January 2009 at the age of 91 years.

Len was a veteran of the Second World War. He enlisted in Victoria BC in January 1941 and received his basic training there.  He was assigned to the Royal Canadian Engineers and went to England with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division Engineers. Badly wounded in May 1944 in Italy on the Hitler Line, he was sent to England for recuperation. Len then came home to Canada in September 1944 aboard the hospital ship Princess Margaret and was discharged in December 1944 in Calgary.

A funeral service will be held at the Marwayne Alliance Church on 4 February with interment following at the Marwayne Cemetery.  Donations may be made to the Lloydminster Regional Hospital Foundation, Lloydminster SK or a charity of one’s choice. 

Spr Arthur Albert Desautels (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Arthur Albert Desautels (Ret’d) at the Deer Lodge Centre in Winnipeg MB on 26 January 2009 at the age of 86 years.

Arthur enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers at the age of 17 years.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas.  After the war, he returned home and worked first as a miner in Ontario, then as an auto mechanic in St. Jean Baptiste and Keewatin, ON. He later settled in St. Vital, MB.  Arthur was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #100 in Winnipeg.

Maj Alan Stanley Derrick, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Major Alan Stanley Derrick, CD (Ret'd) peacefully at Providence Care in Kingston on 24 January 2009, in his 79th year.

Alan was born in Eston, SK and attended high school in Kingston, ON. He graduated from The Royal Military College of Canada in 1954 and from University of McGill in 1955 with a degree in Civil Engineering. In his first posting to Chilliwack he became a rifle marksman. He was the winner of the Queen's Medal for Champion Rifle Shots of the Armed Forces and was the high aggregate rifle marksman for 1956 and 1957 including the Bisley Team. Following a posting to Ottawa and instructing on Militia staff courses in Kingston, AI served as a military observer in Damascus and Jerusalem with UNTSO and later with the Operations Staff at Palestine Headquarters following the Six Day Arab/Israeli War. There followed a series of postings to Toronto, Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering, and with Militia Staff in Hamilton involving Special Projects, Construction Engineering, Cadet Liaison and Recruiting.

AI retired in 1985, living first in Trenton and later in Kingston. Known for his dedication to family, friends and community. He was a strong supporter of the Canadian Military Engineer Family.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place. Family will receive friends on Tuesday 27 January from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at James Reid Funeral Home (1900 John Counter Blvd.). A celebration of Alan's life will take place on Wednesday 28 January at 11:00 am at St. Luke's Anglican Church, 236 Nelson Street, Kingston. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Parkinson Society Canada or your charity of choice.

Ronald Joseph Campbell

We regret to announce the passing of Ronald "Bugs" Campbell at the age of 75 on 23 January 2009 at the Glace Bay Health Care Facility.

Born in Glace Bay, Ron served with the Canadian Military Engineers for 28 years in locations that included peacekeeping in Egypt and Lebanon. After retiring from the Canadian Forces he served as a Commissionaire.

Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Sunday, 25 January from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. At Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, NS [849-7520]. Funeral services will be held Monday, 26 January at 2:00 p.m. At St. John's Church. Burial in St. John's Cemetery at a later date. CWO Jacob "Jake" Froese, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of CWO Jake Froese (Ret'd), a resident of the Birchwood Retirement Home in Chilliwack, on 21 January 2009 at the age of 88 years.

Jake was born in Herbert, SK, He served in the Royal Canadian Engineer as Foreman of Works, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer  Earlier in his career, Jake served in Korea.

Jake is buried in the Chilliwack Crematories. There was no public service.

William “Bill” James Greenslade

We regret to advise of the death of William “Bill” James Greenslade peacefully at the Montfort Hospital, Ottawa ON, on 16 January 2009 in his 93rd year. 

Bill was born and raised in Toronto ON.  He was a WW II veteran having enlisted in 1939 as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers and serving for over five years in Italy, Northwest Europe and the UK.  Upon demobilisation, Bill joined the Department of Veterans Affairs working at the Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto where he worked for the next 29 years.  Bill retired to the Barrie ON area--eventually moving to Ottawa in 2005.

Visitation will be at the Westboro Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 403 Richmond Road, Ottawa on 20 January.  Funeral services will be held in Barrie at the Chapel of Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Homes, 201 Minet’s Point Road on 22 January.  Interment to be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Innisfil ON.  Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.  Condolences, donations or tributes may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com. {gdMar2016kh}

CPO Lee Palmer Bushen, CD (Ret’d)

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Petty Officer Lee Palmer Bushen (Ret’d) of Upper Sackville, NS at Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building in Halifax, NS on 15 January 2009 at the age of 88 years.

Lee was born in West Dublin NS. He began his naval career as an ordinary seaman in the Merchant Navy in 1937. He was a veteran of the Second World War, enlisting in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1939 as an Able Seaman. He advanced to Leading Seaman, to Petty Officer and finally to Chief Petty Officer First Class, Master Gunner. During the war, Lee served aboard many ships; Lady Hawkins, HMCS Assiniboine, HMCS Skeena, HMCS Avalon, HMCS Stadacona, HMCS Cornwallis, the armed yacht HCMS Hochelaga, the frigate HMCS Stettler. 

On release from the Navy, he enrolled in a carpentry course in 1945. He worked on several ships as a carpenter and later became a self-employed contractor, building houses in Liverpool as well as Cape Breton. He moved his family moved to Cape Breton in 1954. While there, he served as a Sapper in the 45th Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers in Sydney, NS. He closed his carpentry business after many years and worked for Reid's Building Supplies in Sydney until his retirement. He moved to Upper Sackville in 2004 to be near the rest of the family. He was a member of the Cape Breton Naval Veterans' Association and the Royal Canadian Legion.

Visitation will be held from 2 until 4 PM and from 7 until 9 PM on Sunday, 18 January in the Atlantic Funeral Home in Lower Sackville. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on 19 January at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beaverbank, NS with a reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will be in the Oakridge Memory Gardens, Lower Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QE II Health Sciences Centre Foundation, Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building Garden Fund, Church of the Good Shepherd Memorial Fund or charity of your choice.
 

Charles Ira “Charlie” Farrow

We regret to advise of the death of Charles Ira “Charlie” Farrow in the East Cumberland Lodge in Pugwash, NS on 11 January 2009 at the age of 90 years.

Charlie was born in Oxford, NS but moved with his family to Malagash at an early age.  After high school, he worked at the Malagash salt mine until the outbreak of the Second World War. Charlis was a veteran of the Second World War and served overseas with the 1st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.

Following the war Charlie worked as a licensed steamfitter in Hamilton, ON and later in the Halifax area. He also worked for the city of Halifax and taught evening classes for the Department of Labour as well as at Vocational Schools in the area.

Charlie took several teaching and administration courses at Dalhousie University, Purdue University and the Institute of Technology in Moncton, N.B. He was Vice-Principal at Kings County Vocational School in Kentville where he finished his last two years there as acting Principal before retiring in 1974.

During retirement Charlie was active in the Malagash Community devoting time to several projects, developing land, and writing two books on the history of Malagash and the salt mine community. He was Past Master and Life Member of Wallace Masonic Lodge and Past President and Life Member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 97in Malagash. During his later years, he enjoyed painting tall ships, seascapes, animals, and birds.

The Royal Canadian Legion will conduct a tribute service at 1 p.m. on 16 January 16, in Coulter's Funeral Home in Tatamagouche, NS followed immediately by a celebration of Charlie's life with interment in MacKenzie Cemetery in Malagash. Family flowers only by request. LCol Julius Joel Wolfe, CM, CD (Ret'd)

We regret to advise of the death of Lieutenant-Colonel Julius Joel Wolfe on 10 January 2009.

Born in Montreal in 1917, Colonel Wolfe was educated in Montreal public schools and majored in Agricultural Engineering at Macdonald College, School of Agriculture. He enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers in October 1941 and was commissioned as a Lieutenant a year later. Lieutenant Wolfe served with the 738 Army Troop Company, Royal Engineers and in Italy with the 643 Field Company, Royal Engineers 1944-45. He was promoted to Captain in June 1945.

In 1953 Colonel Wolfe enlisted in 3 Field Engineer Regiment (Militia). Promoted to Major in 1954, he was appointed Second-in-Command in 1961. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he was appointed Commanding Officer 1963-66. During this tour he commanded the military engineer operation to defuse and destroy a number of terrorist bombs placed in mail boxes throughout the city of Westmount. Colonel Wolfe was appointed Honorary Lieutenant Colonel of 3 Field Engineer Regiment in 1992 and was subsequently appointed Honorary Colonel of the Regiment in 1995.

Colonel Wolfe formed the Jewish War Veterans of Canada and was elected First National Commander 1968-1972. In 1972 he was elected President (Eastern Region), retiring in 1979 as Honorary President of the Eastern Region. He was a member of Bnai-Brith of Canada and the United Services Club Montreal for more than 30 years. Colonel Wolfe was an active member and supporter of the Military Engineers Association of Canada. He was awarded the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal in 1993 and was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2000.

RCE Band Sergeant Major Roy Barnes (Ret'd)

We regret to advise that Roy Barnes passed peacefully at home in Revelstoke on 10 January 2009 at 90 years old.

Born in Portsmouth UK, Roy spent 16 years in the British Army, four of which were in Stalag VIII in Poland as a Prisoner of War. Immigrating to Canada in 1953, he joined the band of the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers and was stationed in Chilliwack, BC. Roy retired to Revelstoke in 1990 where he enjoyed model boat building, fishing and bowling.

There will be no formal funeral service.

Reverend Arthur Sidney Allerton

We regret to advise of the death of Reverend Arthur Sidney Allerton on 9 January 2009 at the Grey Bruce Health Services in Owen Sound, ON in his 86th year.

Arthur was born in Scarborough, ON.  He was a veteran of the Second World War and served with the 1st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in the Mediterranean Theatre.  After the war he graduated from the Ontario College of Art in Industrial Design in 1949. He later answered a call to serve his church in the parishes of Manvers, Bethany and Lloydtown-Schomberg, all in Ontario.

A Funeral Service will be held at St. George's Anglican Church in Owen Sound on 17 January at 2:00 pm.  Visitation will be for one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. George's Restoration Fund or the charity of one’s choice. MWO Einar Elverum, MMM, CD (Ret'd)

Master Warrant Officer Einar Elverum, MMM, CD (Ret'd) passed peacefully in his 74th year on 8 January 2009.

Robert J. "Des" Desjardins

We regret to advise of the death of "Des" Desjardins on 8 January 2009 approaching his 70th year.

Des was a 5th Intake, RCE Sapper Apprentice. In retirement he was a strong supporter of the activities of the Retired Sappers and the Sapper Apprentices.

A memorial Mass followed by a reception will be held on 18 April 2009 at 1:00 PM at St. Sailes Parish 6610 Balmoral Street. Burnaby BC.

Denis R. Devereaux

We regret to advise the death of Denis R. Devereaux on 7 January 2009 of Cambridge ON at the age of 76 years. Denis was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Galt Branch #121 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Cambridge.

Kenneth Earl “Barney” Barnett

We regret to advise of the death of Kenneth Earl “Barney” Barnett peacefully at the St. Michael's Health Care Centre in Lethbridge, AB on 6 January 2009 at the age of 80 years.

Barney was born in Kennedy, SK.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war, having graduated from Garbutt Business College in Lethbridge, he began a successful 42-year career in the accounting department at the Lethbridge Herald newspaper.  Barney was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch #4 in Lethbridge and a member of the Lethbridge Senior Citizen’s Organization.

 A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on 12 January at the Martin Brothers Riverview Chapel. Donations may be made to St. Michael’s Health Care Foundation, Lethbridge or a charity of one’s choice.  

Joseph Henry Komus

We regret to advise the death of Joseph Henry Komus on 6 January 2009 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home in Winnipeg MB at the age of 93 years.

Joe was born to German immigrant parents in Winnipeg and was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. After the war, he had a 30-year career with Manitoba Hydro in the finance department including many years as Cash Receipts Supervisor. Joe retired in 1978.
