We regret to advise of the death of Leon Buell of Montague at Kings County Memorial Hospital on 4 February 2013, at age 86.

Resting at Southern Kings & Queens Funeral Home, Murray River. No visitation by personal request. A memorial service to be held from Memorial United Church, Murray River, on 8 February 2013, at 2:30 p.m. Interment later in Murray River Cemetery. We regret to advise of the death of Melvin Darwin Simpson at the Trenton Memorial Hospital on 30 January 2013 at age 69 years. Mel was a member of the 8th Intake Sapper Apprentice.

At Mel’s request there will be no service at this time. Cremation. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Palliative Care Unit of the Trenton Memorial Hospital would be appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise the death of Sergeant Ernest H. “Harry” Ellwand, CD (Ret’d) on 22 January 2013 at the Colonel By Residence in Ottawa, ON in his 100^th year.

Harry was born in Liverpool, England.  He served in the Second World War with the Royal Air Force Bomber Command and flew 39 missions over enemy territory.  From 1945-1946 he served with the British Occupation Forces in Italy, Germany and Austria before returning to civilian life to work as a commercial artist in postwar London. 

Harry moved to Canada in 1952 and joined the Canadian Army where he served with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a cartographer in the Army Survey Establishment.  In 1962 he was assigned to the Canadian Army Historical Section.  In that capacity he contributed to official war histories,  including " The History of the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers - Vol II," drawing highly detailed maps.  In 1975 he left the Directorate of History and undertook mapmaking contracts in Kenya and as Chief Cartographer at the University of Papua, New Guinea.   Harry later worked as a cartographer at Carleton University in Ottawa, retiring at the age of 70 years. ^{{dcOct2017gd} [zbd]}

We regret to advise of the death of Thomas “Tom” Makin Sudworth of Coleman AB peacefully on 11 January 2013 at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre in Blairmore AB at the age of 92 years.

Tom was born in Coleman.  He joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and served in the 31^st Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.  Tom returned to Coleman after the war and participated in numerous charitable and service organizations in that community.  He was a member of the Masons, Elks, Lions and was a Life Member of Legion Branch #9 in Coleman, where he had served on the executive.

A Celebration honouring Tom’s life will be held on 26 January at 1:00 PM in the Coleman Legion. Tributes will be presented by members of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Masonic Lodge and members of the family.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s memory may be made to the Salvation Army. ^{{dcMar2018gd} [zcc, zpi]}

We regret to advise that Corporal George J. Moore (Ret’d) passed away peacefully at home on 9 January 2013 in Innisfil, ON, in his 84^th year.

George was born in England and served with the British Army prior to coming to Canada where he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers 1958. His first posting was to Demonstration Troop at Camp Chilliwack and he later remustered to a Construction Tradesman. George deployed to the United Nations Emergency Force in 1963. He retired from the Works Company in Base Borden where he also worked as a civilian.

As per his request there will be no funeral service. Burial will be in the spring at the Anglican Cemetery, Woodstock. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the R.V.H. Cancer Care Centre.

We regret to advise of the death of Harold Elizée D’Entremont of Lower West Pubnico, NS at the Nakile Home for Special Care in Glenwood, NS on 7 January 2013 at the age of 99 years.

Harold was born in Lower West Pubnico. He was a veteran of the Second World War and served for four years in the Royal Canadian Engineers.  After the war he worked as a fisherman for most of his life and fished lobster, herring and swordfish from Cape Hatteras to the Grand Banks.  He was a founding member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch # 66, West Pubnico.

Visitation was held in West Pubnico Funeral Home in Middle West Pubnico. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, Middle West Pubnico.  Interment will be in the parish cemetery. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper William Sylvester “Bill” Hughes of Waterloo ON on 5 January 2013 after a brief fight with cancer at the age of 78 years.

Bill was born in Charlottetown PE.  He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 530 of Waterloo for 40 years.

Friends are invited to a memorial service at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home,  Waterloo on Wednesday 9 January 2013 at 1 PM with a reception to follow in the Fireside Reception Room of the Funeral Home. We regret to advise that Captain Edwin Forsyth (`Ed`) Richardson (Ret’d) passed away peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus on 28 December 2012.

Born in Deer Island, NB, 1n 1927, Ed joined the Canadian Forces in 1947 and served a full 35-year career with the Canadian Military Engineers with the Army Survey Establishment and Mapping and Charting Establishment.

Completing his Group 1 Survey qualification in 1949, Ed worked as a photogrammetrist. Promoted to sergeant in 1951, he later additionally undertook studies at the University of Ottawa. He was promoted to Staff Sergeant in 1957, to Warrant Officer Class II in 1966, and he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1967. Shortly thereafter Ed became Second-in-Command of the Joint Operations Graphic Squadron. Promoted to Captain in October 1970, in 1971 he started a 2-year posting as the Canadian Exchange Officer with the Royal Australian Survey Corps in Bendigo, Victoria where he was employed with the Army Survey Regiment as Second-in-Command of the Topographic Squadron working on the Papua New Guinea mapping program. Returning to MCE, Ed was appointed OIC PhotoLithography in 1973, then OC Reproduction Division in 1974 and, finally, Program Management Officer. Ed retired from the Canadian Forces in July 1982.

A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart Institute or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

We regret to advise of the death of William "Billy" Nightingale at home in Glace Bay, NS on 25 December 2012.

Billy was born in Glace Bay.  He was an Army veteran who served in the Royal Canadian Engineers in Germany, Cyprus and Canada.  He was a active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #3 in Glace Bay.

We regret to advise of the death of Kenneth Robert Atwell on 23 December 2012 at Middleton, NS. Born in Summerville, NB, during his working years Kenneth spent six months in Labrador working on the Grand Falls Power Project, three years in the Air Force, seven years employed by Mark A. Leonards Ltd., and worked for 27 years with the CFB Cornwallis Fire Department.

Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Kaulbach Family Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Annapolis Royal. No visitation by request. Family flowers only. Funeral service will be held 2:00 pm 28 December 2012 in First United Baptist Church, Annapolis Royal. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Lequille. We regret to advise of the death of Warrant Officer John Charland CD (Ret’d) at Brockville General Hospital on 21 December 2012. John served for 27 years including as a Combat Engineer in Chilliwack, B.C. and retiring from the service in 1977 as a Construction Maintenance Technician at CFB Greenwood, NS.

We regret to abvise of the death of Sapper Steve John Takacs of Pitcher Butte AB on 20 December 2012 at the age of 84 years.

Steve was born in Totszerdahely, Hungary and immigrated to Canada with his mother in 1938 to join his father and become a Canadian citizen. They came to Nobleford AB and a year later moved to Picture Butte. Steve enlisted with the army in Vancouver in 1951 and was stationed in Chilliwack BC. As a member of 23^rd Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers, he served in the Korean War. On his return from the war, he took over his father's farmland, where he farmed and bought and sold cattle, until his retirement.

During his early years before joining the army, he worked in the bush near Revelstoke, helped build the Three Sisters Dam in Canmore, and was a cowboy on the Copithorne Ranch near Cochrane. He was a member of the Elks Club and the Royal Canadian Legion. An avid curler, he won many trophies. He loved to read, travel, nature drive, fish, hunt, and socialize with friends.

A Memorial Service will be held at Cornerstone Funeral Home, 2800 Mayor Magrath Drive South, Lethbridge, AB on Friday, 4 January 2013 at 1:00 PM with interment to follow in the Huntsville Cemetery. We regret to advise of the death of Sapper James M. “Jim” Erskine (Ret'd) of St. Catharines, ON at the St. Catherines General Hospital on 7 December 2012 at the age of 88 years.

Jim was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War.  After the war, he worked for many years at the Domtar Paper Mill in St. Catharines.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Merritton Branch #138.

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter David Edward Champion on 4 December 2012 in Toronto ON at the age of 86 years.  David was a veteran firefighter of the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Air Force.

David was born in Victoria BC and served with the RCAF primarily at the Service Flying Training School No. 12 in Brandon MB. He retired in 1990 from Oshawa Group after working over 25 years as assistant produce manager at Food City.

Visitation will be held on 6 December from 2-4:00 p.m. and 7-9:00 p.m. at the R.S. Kane Funeral Home (6150 Yonge Street, Toronto). A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, 7 December at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel. Interment to follow at York Cemetery. We regret to advise of the death of Johannes `Joe` Jacobus Verburgh at Orchardview Long Term Care Facility, Gagetown, on 29 November 2012 at the age of 87. Joe was born in Nijmegen, Holland. After emigrating to Canada, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in December 1953 in order to serve in Korea – even before he became a Canadian citizen. Joe did not deploy to Korea but was involved with his unit in the aftermath of Hurricane Hazel in 1954. In 1955-59 he served in Germany with 1 and 4 Field Squadrons and in 1959 was posted to 2 Field Squadron at Camp Gagetown. He then deployed to Egypt as part of the United Nations Emergency Force in 1959-60 and served at Canadian Forces Station Alert from September 1969 to March 1970. Joe was promoted to Master Corporal in 1973 and served in Cyprus with the Pioneer Platoon of 2 Royal Canadian Regiment from 1973 to 1974. Upon return from this deployment he was promoted to Sergeant in 1974 and retired in 1976. After his retirement Joe worked at the CE Section in CFB Gagetown from 1976 to 1979. He was a lifelong member of the International Order of Oddfellows, The Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 93 and was a proud member the Atlantic Retired Sappers Association. Visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home on 2 December from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at Oromocto Baptist Church on 3 December. Interment will be in Burton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society or the Oromocto Baptist Church Building Fund would be appreciated by the family.

We regret to advise of the death of Firefighter Sergeant Roger Comeau, CD (Ret`d) of Aldouane, NB at the Rexton Lions Nursing Home, in Rexton NB on 29 November 2012 at age 85.

Born in Aldouane NB, Roger attended St. Louis de Gonzague Roman Catholic Church in Richibucto. In 1950 he enlisted in the Canadian Army Special Force that was being formed to fight in the Korean War. Roger served in Korea as a Lance Corporal with the 57th Independent Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers. After the war he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) as a Firefighter where, among his postings, he was an instructor in the RCAF Fire School at Camp Borden ON in the early 1960s and later at the Fire Department at RCAF Station Chatham NB.

Roger served for 21 years before retiring in 1972 at the rank of Sergeant. In retirement, he returned home and worked as a carpenter for Kent Homes and as a guard at Kouchibouguac National Park. Roger purchased a fishing boat "Marie Maria" and fished until he fully retired. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 30, Richibucto NB.

Visitation will be at Thompson`s Funeral Home in Richibucto on 2 December from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and on Monday from noon until the time of the funeral. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, 3 December at 2:00 pm at Thompson's Funeral Home Chapel in Richibucto.

We regret to announce the passing of Alan Geoffrey Marris on 24 November 2012.

Al joined Mapping and Charting Establishment in 1965 and, after completing the Topographic Survey trade selection course, started what was to be a 23-year career as a Civilian in the unit. Training as a Stereo Compilation Operator was followed by employment in the Cartographic Sub-Section, Joint Operations Graphic Squadron, and with Aero Triangulation until he was required to retire in 1988 due to ill health. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Alan's life at the Heart & Crown on Preston Street in Ottawa on Sunday 9 December from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the MS Society in Alan's name would be appreciated.

We regret to announce the death of Sergeant John William Bryden "Sam" McGhee (Ret’d) at the North Bay Regional Health Center on 21 November 2012.

Sam was a 23-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, serving first as an Air Boson in the Royal Canadian Navy and then later as a Firefighter in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He then worked in the Transit Department of the City of North Bay and then with Public Works. Sam was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23, the Nipissing Masonic Lodge #420, the Rorab Shrine Club and was the host every Wednesday and Friday of the Gordon Drive Shedites commonly referred to as Branch 23 and a Half.

Two Memorial Services will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #23 on Friday, 30 November and all are welcome. The Masonic Service will be at 1:00 PM followed by the Legion Service at 1:30 PM. Fellowship and refreshments to follow. A gathering will occur later on Friday at the Legion for all Sam's friends to enjoy one last Meat Draw and remember his Life in a way in which Sam would have appreciated. If desired, donations to War Amps of Canada would be appreciated.

We regret to advise the death of Raymond Denis on 20 November 2012 at the age of 85 years.

Raymond was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Royal Canadian Engineers. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Lt.-Col. Paul Brosseau Branch #190 in St-Jérôme  QC. ^{{dcJan18gd} [zsd, zcc, zpp, zbd]}

We regret to advise of the death of Mr Serge Rivard on 14 November 2012 after a short battle with cancer. Serge had 42 years of service to Canada - first in in the Canadian Forces as a Construction Engineering Procedures Technician and then with the Public Service (Assistant Finance Administration Officer), retiring from 19 Wing Construction Engineering in July 2012.

Mr. Serge Rivard was born in Estcourt, QC, in 1951. He joined the Regular Force in June 1969 and was posted to Canadian Forces Radar Station, Sioux Lookout in November 1971 upon completion of his initial Military Engineering training. Employed as a Construction Engineering Procedures Technician, Serge served in various locations across Canada. He was posted to 12^eme Regiment Blindé du Canada in Valcartier in November 1972 and then deployed overseas with 73 Canadian Service Battalion to Ismailia Egypt from December 1973 to April 1974. Returning to Canada, Serge was posted to CFS Lowther in June 1975 and subsequently to BFC Montreal in July 1978 where he continued to provide administrative and financial services to Construction Engineering. Serge was then posted to CFS Falconbridge in May 1981 and then to Ottawa in July 1986. Four years later he was posted to BFC Valcartier and then back again to Ottawa in July 1993. In July 1996 he was posted to CFB Comox where he would eventually take his retirement from the Regular Force in June 1997. Serge then joined the Reserve Force from June 1997 until August 2005 holding various positions at 19 Wing Comox.

Serge became a member of the Public Service in December 2005 and worked as the assistant Finance Administration Officer until his retirement in July 2012 from 19 Wing Construction Engineering.

A service will be held on Wednesday 21 November at 13:00 hrs in the 19 Wing Roman Catholic Chapel. Everyone is invited to attend a reception which will be held after the service in the Officers' Mess. Donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

We regret to advise of the death of Major Malcolm Stott "Mac" MacConnell, CD (Ret'd), peacefully on 13 November 2012, at his home in Dartmouth NS at the age of 89 years.

Born in Plaster Rock NB, Mac attended Plaster Rock High School. He was a veteran of the Secoond World War, joininhg the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and going overseas in 1943 where he flew two tours as a pilot with Royal Air Force Bomber Command. His second tour was with the Pathfinder Force. 

After the end of the war, Mac returned to Fredericton NB where he graduated as a Civil Engineer from the University of New Brunswick in 1950. He then rejoined the RCAF and served as a Construction Engineer officer until he retired from the Canadian Forces in 1972. After retirement, he continued to serve as a public servant at Maritime Command Headquarters in Halifax NS in various construction engineering positions until his retirement in 1987. 

Mac was a member of the Association of Professional Engineers, the Nova Scotia  Centennial Branch No 160 of the Royal Canadian Legion and  the Nova Scotia Branch of the Aircrew Association, He was an active member of Woodlawn United Church where he served as an Elder for 17 years. Mac also served on the Halifax Presbytery for five years. He enjoyed all outdoor life, especially hunting, fishing and gardening. 

Visitation on 16 November 2012 from 2 to 4:00 pm and 7 to 9:00 pm. Funeral services on 17 November at 11:00 am. Interment in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cancer Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of your choice.

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant George Richard Armishaw following a brief illness at the Lacombe Hospital, Lacombe AB on 7 November 2012 at the age of 92.

George was born in Mannville, AB and spent his formative years in Myrnam, AB. He enlisted in the Canadian Army at the age of 19 and served as a clerk with the Royal Canadian Engineers in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany attaining the rank of sergeant. After the war, George returned to Alberta where he worked as a manager for various lumber yards in Paradise Valley, Bashaw, and Rimbey. In Rimbey he moved to the oil industry as an accounting clerk with Amerada Petroleum. In 1972 George moved to Lacombe where he accepted a position as a bookkeeper at the Parkland Regional Library until his retirement in 1972. George was a 72-year member of the Red Deer, AB Legion Branch #35, 60-year member of the Masonic Lodge and member of the Scottish Rite and the Shriners.

A funeral service will be held on 12 November 2012 at Wilson’s Funeral Chapel, Lacombe, AB followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery, Lacombe. Memorial donations may be made to the Masonic Higher Education Bursary Fund, The Grand Lodge of Alberta, 330 – 12th Avenue SW, Calgary, AB T2R 0H2. ^{{gdAug2015kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Ernest James “Butch” Perry peacefully in St. Thomas, ON on 5 October 2012 at the age of 94.

Butch was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers as a member of the 2^nd Field Company.  He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Lord Elgin Branch #41.

There will be no visitation or service. We regret to advise of the death of Colonel James Douglas Megill CD, P.Eng. (Ret’d) on 19 November 2012 in Cornwall, ON. Jim was born in Kingston, ON and attended Le Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean and the Royal Military College of Canada, graduating in 1963 with a B.Eng. (Civil)(Honours).

Jim was awarded the first Athlone Fellowship awarded to an RMC graduate but was unable to pursue this opportunity in England. Upon being commissioned into the Corps of Royal Canadian Engineers, he was first posted to 2 Field Squadron RCE at Camp Gagetown. While there he joined a small number of RCE Officers being trained as Army Pilots. In 1965 he attended the Light Aircraft Pilot's Course at RCAF Station Centralia and the Canadian Joint Air Training Centre at Rivers Camp, Manitoba, obtaining his wings in April 1966. Following conversion to helicopters, he was sent to the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering as an Instruction Troop Commander and Explosives Disposal Officer.

In June 1968 Jim was appointed Engineer Advisor to the Tanzanian People's Defence Force. On his return to Canada a year later, he was posted to Canadian Forces Base Borden as the Acting Base Construction Engineering Officer. He attended the Canadian Army Staff College Kingston 1971/1972 and was subsequently a visiting Directing Staff member for the Reserve Officers Command and Staff Courses in 1972 and 1975. Upon completing his Staff College course Jim was appointed Commanding Officer of 5e Escadron de Génie du Canada at CFB Valcartier. After that tour he was posted to Mobile Command Headquarters at St Hubert, QC as Staff Officer Plans & Operations (National).

Promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1974, Jim was then appointed Senior Staff Officer Field Engineers and, two years later, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff Combat Development & Support. In 1977 he was posted to CFB Halifax as the Base Const Engineering Officer. In 1981 Jim was appointed Commandant, Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering and held that appointment until 1983 when he was posted to NDHQ as Director Base Maintenance. Promoted to Colonel in 1983, he was appointed Director Construction Engineering Control. In 1985 Jim returned to Mobile Command HQ as Command Engineer for three years before he was selected to attend the National Defence College. Completion of that course saw Jim return to NDHQ as the Director Establishment Requirements.

Jim retired from the Canadian Forces in October 1990 to become the Director Planning & Engineering for the City of Cornwall, ON. Upon ending his City duties in October 1992, Jim became the Managing Partner of Conseils UBIQUE Consultants. He served for the year 1994/95 with the United Nations in Angola as the Programme Manager of the Central Mine Action Office. Next he worked with the Government of Canada and other public and private agencies in humanitarian mine action as well as in facilities management. Jim was the Executive Director of The Canadian Association for Mine and Explosive Ordnance (CAMEO) Security, a registered charity conducting humanitarian landmine clearance in war-torn societies, that he founded in February 1997.

Jim was also very active in his community. He was ordained to the Anglican clergy in Canada in 1983 and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church of the Sudan in August 2005. He was the Past Chair of the Cornwall and Area Housing Authority, the Protestant Chaplain of Branch 297 of the Royal Canadian Legion and Wing 424 of the Air Force Association of Canada. Jim is also a Past President of the Cornwall-Sunrise Rotary Club.

We regret to advise of the death of Colonel John Reginald “Jack” Lines, CD (Ret’d), peacefully in Moncton NB on 19 October 2021 at the age of 87 years.

Born in Mount Dennis in Toronto ON, Jack entered the Regular Officer Training Program and received a degree in civil engineering from the University of Toronto in 1957. His career in the Royal Canadian Air Force took him across Canada including his first posting surveying on Baffin Island. As a senior officer, he served in Air Transport Command Headquarters and was Deputy Chief of Staff Military Engineering in Air Command Headquarters (1979-81). Jack also served in National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa on both the Vice Chief of Defence Staff and the Deputy Chief of Defence Staff.

Jack retired in 1984 at the rank of colonel and took his project management and construction skills to the Bank of Canada where he worked for the next six years managing their building portfolio. Jack and his wife Helen retired to her family farm in Upper Cape in southeast New Brunswick.  Upon retiring to his adopted community, Jack took on many volunteer activities. He spent several years on the board of the Westford Nursing Home, managing the renovation of the heritage Keillor House museum, managing the finances of several local volunteer organizations, and being a lay preacher in his local United Church.

We regret to advise of the death of William Lawson “Bill” Nicoll in Ottawa on 12 October 2012 at the age of 86 years.

Bill was born in Prince George, BC and raised in Melville, SK.  He was a veteran of the Second World War who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers in Canada and was involved in the building and maintenance of the Alaska Highway linking Prince George, BC to Alaska.  After demobilisation, and relying on his natural capacity for languages, he joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, eventually going to work for the Department of National Defence (Special Branch) as a civilian communications analyst in Canadian Forces Station (CFS) Ladner, and CFS Masset, BC. He retired in Ottawa in 1984.

Funeral service will be held on 18 October at 2:00 PM in the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road, Ottawa.  A celebration of life will follow the interment. Donations may be made to an animal welfare charity of one’s choice. ^{{gdMar2017dc} [zsd, zsp]}

We regret to advise of the passing of John Archibald Britten on 30 October 2012 at the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Centre in Halifax.

John served in the Second World War from 1939 – 1945 with the 1^st Field Company RCE. Following the war he worked for the Canada Post as a railway clerk and supervisor. He served as secretary for his unit’s Veterans’ Association helping to keep fellow veterans abreast of 1^st Field Company reunions and related news.

Visitation will be held on 2 November at Cruikshank's Funeral Home Halifax. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 3 November at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, Bayers Road, Halifax. We regret to advise of the passing of Sergeant Ken W. Peagam, Fort Qu'Appelle, Sask. On 2 October 2012. Ken was born in Wolseley, SK in 1945 and was raised in Rosewood near Lemberg, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1963 and worked as a military firefighter. Ken was stationed in several areas across Canada and also Germany. He moved back to Saskatchewan in 1992. At Ken's request his body was donated for medical research. A memorial funeral service will be held in St. Andrew's United Church, Fort Qu'Appelle on Saturday, 6 Oct. 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers if friends so desire contributions to the Saskatchewan Lung Association, 1231 - 8th Street E., Saskatoon S7H 0C5 or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan, 279 - 3rd Avenue N., Saskatoon S7K 2H8 may be tokens of remembrance.

We regret to advise of the death of Sergeant Murray James Inglis (Ret’d) peacefully at the Pontiac General Hospital in Shawville QC on 27 September 2012 at the age of 91.

Born in Winnipeg MB, Murray was a WW II veteran who served overseas as an infantryman with the Lake Superior Regiment from 1940 to 1945.  Demobilized in 1945, he rejoined the Army in 1946 and served with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers as an instrument mechanic.  In 1949 he transferred to the Royal Canadian Engineers as a surveyor and participated in field surveys of McBride BC and the Northwest Highway System Highway.  In 1955 Murray qualified as a photogrammetrist.  He retired in 1967 and created and operated the Inglis Carpet Cleaners Ltd.

Visitation will be held at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150Woodroffe Avenue, Ottawa ON on 5 October from 9:30 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service in the chapel.  Donations may be made to the Pontiac General Hospital Palliative Care Unit, the Canadian Cancer Society , the Alzheimer Society of Ottawa-Carleton or a charity of one’s choice.  ^{{gdSep2016kh}}

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Bruno Joseph Bobak, CM (Ret’d) on 24 September 2012 at the Saint John, NB Regional Hospital at the age of 88.  He was one of Canada’s premier War Artists in the Second World War.

Bruno was born in Wawelowska, Poland and immigrated to Canada in 1927.  At the age of thirteen, he began Saturday morning art classes in Toronto, ON under Group of Seven painter, Arthur Lismer and, later, at the Toronto Central Technical School.  In 1943, at age 19, he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Sapper and was posted to Camp Petawawa, ON for training. He arrived in England in late 1943 where he was involved in the preparations for the invasion of the continent.  As an amateur artist, he sketched his bunkmates for extra money and came to the attention of the Historical Section at Canadian Military Headquarters in London. He was taken on strength as a Service Artist and, after completing officer training in the summer of 1944 he became an official War Artist. He served with 4^th Canadian Armoured Division from December 1944 to July 1945.  Bruno remarked in a 1998 interview that the occupational change “saved my life for most of the platoon I was in died on D-Day.”

After the war, he married Second Lieutenant Molly Lamb, who was Canada’s first female war artist.  They settled briefly in Ottawa working as artists. In 1947, they moved to Vancouver where he taught at the Vancouver School of Art.  After a decade of work as an artist and instructor of art on the West Coast, where he won much critical acclaim, he moved to Fredericton, NB in 1960 to serve as Artist in Residence at the University of New Brunswick. In 1962 he took on the role of Director of the University of New Brunswick Art Centre.  Bruno retired in 1986.

Bruno was an eminent member of multiple societies: the Canada Group of Painters; the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers; the Canadian Society of Graphic Art; the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour; the British Columbia Society of Artists; and the Royal Canadian Academy.

Among a lifetime of awards and achievements he was especially proud of the Honorary Doctor of Letters from Saint Thomas University in Fredericton in 1984; the Honorary Doctor of Literature from the University of New Brunswick in 1986 and the Order of Canada in 1995 when both he and his wife were inducted.  Many of Bruno’s works are displayed in Fredericton as part of the Beaverbrook Art Collection.

We regret to advise of the death of Sapper Harold "Hal" Thomas Sulz (Ret’d) on 18 September 2012 in Merritt, BC after a courageous battle with cancer. Harold was born in Medicine Hat, AB. in 1938 and took his schooling in Medicine Hat until he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers with the Sapper Apprentice Program at the early age of 16 in 1958. Hal completed his 2-year Apprentice program at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwack with the 3rd Intake and returned to civilian like upon completion of his commitment.

After marrying in 1960, Harold settled in Haney BC and worked for the Haney Correctional Facility while he furthered his studies at both the college and university levels. In 1965 he moved to Dawson Creek, BC where he began his teaching career. In 1972 the family moved to Port Coquitlam as Hal had accepted a position at Simon Fraser University as a Faculty Associate. In 1973 the family moved to the Nicola Valley and Harold spent the next 22 years with the Merritt School District receiving his M.Ed. at  San Diego State University in 1986. He was Principal at Collettville, Kengaard and Bench before finding his last job as the Resource Centre Manager in the School Board office. After retiring from the School District, Harold joined an Auditing team visiting various schools within the province. In 1999, Harold came out of retirement and purchased True Value Hardware (McLeod’s) with his family. Hed helped to run the business until it’s closing in 2007.

As per Harold’s request, there will be no funeral service but a gathering of family and friends will take place at the Seniors Centre in Merritt on 20 October 2012 at 1:00 p.m. Fellowship and refreshments to follow. Please make any memorial donations to a charity of your choice^.{khMar2016}

Fred was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers.

We regret to advise of the death of Chief Warrant Officer Keith McNeill Starr Deller, CD (Ret’d) on 16 September 2012. Born in 1928 in Toronto, Keith went overseas during the Second World War at the age of 15 years, serving in the Canadian Merchant Marine aboard Norwegian vessels on the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and in the Middle East Theatre in 1944-1945.

Keith enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in August 1946 in the Works and Buildings Branch as a Construction Hand, later re-mustering to Pumpman. His tours of duty included RCAF stations at Trenton, ON, Comox, BC, Chatham, NB, and Cold Lake, AB - spending a few summers on loan to 1 Construction and Maintenance Unit for Arctic Resupply. Keith also travelled to work on projects in Quebec City on the Citadel, in Germany and was involved in Peacekeeping with the United Nations in the Golan Heights, Israel.

When Keith retired in October 1983 he was the longest serving Chief Warrant Officer in the Canadian Military Engineers. He was an avid historian of the First World War, The Second World War and the American Civil Wars and was the author of "Per Ardua ad Usquam - The History of CMUs and 1 CEU". He was well-decorated for his contributions to his country and, on Merchant Navy Day, 3 September 2012, he was delighted to receive the Queen's Jubilee Medal.

A celebration of Keith's life will be held on 22 September 2012 at 1100 hours at 17 Wing Community Chapel, 2235 Silver Ave. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Keith's name to a charity of one's choice. 

We regret to advise that Sergeant Robert Layton Ross (Ret’d) passed away peacefully at the K.E. Spencer Nursing Home on 13 September 2012. Born in Moncton in 1938, Robert began his military career with the Royal Canadian Dragoons but then served his country as a fire fighter in the Air Force and Navy throughout most of his 33-year career. He served in Cyprus and Lahr, Germany and was also stationed in Gagetown, NB, Cold Lake, AB, and Shearwater, NS returning home to Moncton in 1989. The family will be receiving guests at Fair Haven Funeral Home on Tuesday, 18 September 2012 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM. A funeral service will follow visitation in the chapel of Fair Haven Funeral Home. Refreshments and memories will be-shared in the Garden View Reception Room immediately following the funeral service. A private family interment will held at Fair Haven Memorial Gardens. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donation may be made to the Alzheimer's Society, the Salvation Army or a charity of the donor’s choice.

We regret to advise that Sapper Ernest John Samuel Flewelling passed away at the Oromocto Hospital on 13 September 2012 at the age of 92. Born in Grant’s Glen, York County, he was a WW II Royal Canadian Engineer who served with B (RCE) Platoon of the 85th Canadian Bridge Company, RCASC and saw service from 1941 to 1945 in the United Kingdom and in Western Europe. After the war he operated Maple Leaf Construction - a farming and forest operations company. After retiring he ran a strawberry u-pick business. The family had a grave-side committal service at Saint Bridget’s Catholic Church in Gagetown on 18 September followed by a Celebration of his Life at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 71 in Gagetown. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation through the Oromocto Funeral Home.

We regret to advise of the death of William “Bill” Anton Matyas on 23 September 2012 at the age of 94.

Bill was born in Lemberg, SK.  He was a WW II veteran who served with the Royal Canadian Engineers on the front lines throughout the war being wounded in the Hochwald Forest area during Operation VERITABLE, the northern part of the Allied pincer movement that took place in February 1945 during the final stages of WW II.  The objective of the operation was to clear German forces from the area between the Rhine and Maas rivers, east of the German/Dutch frontier, in the Rhineland. 

Bill was also a Korean War veteran who served in Korea from early 1952 until April 1953.  After the war, he returned to Chilliwack BC and the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering.  This posting was followed by assignments in Picton ON, Regina SK and back to Chilliwack in 1968.  He retired in 1969 after a 30-year military career.  Bill then joined the Corps of Commissionaires and served a further 19 years with them.

Bill was one of seven brothers, six of which served in uniform in WW II, with one of them, serving with the Regina Rifles, dying on 9 June 1944 in France.

We regret to advise of the death of Richard “Dick” John Gosick on 9 September 2012 at Chilliwack, BC at the age of 77. 

Dick was born on the family farm in Saskatchewan.  He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers as a Field Engineer and after his training in the 1960s was posted to 3 Field Squadron in Chilliwack, BC.  While in Chilliwack, he qualified as a heavy equipment operator and was attached to Park Troop.  On leaving the military, Dick settled in Yarrow, BC and went to work for the Canadian Penitentiary Service. 

Visitation will be held on 13 September from 6- 8 pm at Henderson’s Funeral Home with Funeral Services arranged for 14 September at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Henderson’s Funeral Home, 45901 Victoria Ave. Chilliwack. We regret to advise of the death of Captain Albert “Joe” Pawlitza in the Chilliwack Hospital on 16 September 2012 at the age of 96 years.

Joe was born on the family farm in Abbey SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1938 and served until 1963. On leaving the Army, Joe worked at several sales positions and owned some businesses before he retired from the work world. He was a member of the IOF Foresters and the Royal Canadian Legion.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday 29 September 2012 at the Woodlawn Mt. Cheam Funeral Home in Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favourite charity in Albert’s name.

We regret to advise of the death of James Douglas Basil Hudson on 24 August 2012 at the Teck Pioneer Residence in Kirkland Lake ON at the age of 92 years.

Doug was born in Parry Sound ON and spent his youth on the family farm in the Wanipatae area. He was a Royal Canadian Engineer veteran of the Second World War. Doug enlisted in 1941 and, after basic training, served overseas until the end of the war. He returned to Canada with an English bride and settled first in the Sudbury area but later moved to Dobie ON where they raised a family. Doug worked for many years at the Upper Canada Mine as an underground miner. He was also active in the community, taking on the roles of Fire Chief and snowplow operator. When the mine closed, Doug was posted to the Macassa Gold Mine in Kirkland Lake and worked there until 1982. Doug was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion and spent time visiting veterans in various hospitals in Northern Ontario.

A funeral service will be held at the Teck Pioneer Residence on Thursday 30 August at 10:30 AM followed by a luncheon. A Legion service will be held in the Chapel at the Teck Pioneer Residence on 30 August at 10:30 AM just prior to the funeral. Donations in Doug's memory may be made to the Teck Pioneer Residence. Cpl Simard was recently posted to 141 Construction Engineer Flight at 14 Wing/Greenwood upon completion of his Construction Technician QL3 course at CFSME.

We regret to advise of the passing of Sergeant Dennis Ronald MacMillan (Retd), 55, of Moncton, on 8 August 2012at The Moncton Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer Born in North Sydney, NS, Dennis served in the Canadian Armed Forces as Firefighter for 22 years. After retirement he was employed with Levitt-Safety Ltd. and was a volunteer firefighter with the City of Moncton.

We regret to advise of the death of Richard Charles Waterhouse on 1 August 2012 in his 91^st year.

Born in Moose Jaw, SK, his family moved to Vancouver in 1925 where he grew up. Dick joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and served overseas with the Royal Canadian Engineers until 1946. He returned to Canada later that year and joined Canada Post in 1947 where he worked as a Letter Carrier until his retirement in 1983.

The family will hold a Celebration of Richard's Life at a later date.

We regret to advise of the death of Captain Edwin Morton 'Bud' Peto, MiD (Ret’d) on 8 January 2012 at the age of 90 at the Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga ON.

Born in Montreal, Bud attended Montreal West High School and then the Royal Military College 1938-40 and McGill University 1940-41. He attended McGill University from 1945 until 1947 and received a BEng (Civil) degree.

Bud joined the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1941. He served his first year (May 1941-April 1942) as an Instructor at A6 Canadian Engineer Training Centre in Dundurn SK and was then posted overseas to the Canadian Engineer Reinforcement Unit (Apr 1942-Aug 1942). From here he was assigned to 16^th Field Company as Platoon Commander (Aug 1942-Sept 1944) and landed on the Normandy Beach on D-Day in support of North Shore Regiment. Bud's unit continued to support the advance of the Canadian Army through Europe and he was transferred to 2^nd Field Company in Holland with the 2^nd Division before the Battle of the Scheldt and returned to England five days before VE-Day.

Lieutenant Peto was Mentioned in Despatches on 3 February 1945. In England, he was assigned to No. 1 Canadian Engineer Reinforcement Unit as Demolitions Training Officer (May 1945-Aug 1945). Captain Peto returned to Canada in Sept 1945 and was demobilised.

After the war, Bud had an extensive career as a Consulting Engineer as the longtime president of the engineering firm E.M. Peto & Assoc. and, subsequently, Peto-MacCallum. Bud was active in the leadership of the Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario as well as the Military Engineering Association of Canada, the Military Engineering Institute of Canada and the Royal Military College Club of Canada.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter "Butler Chapel", 4933 Dundas Street West, on Saturday, 14 January 2012 from 2 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 3 p.m.

We regret to advise that Gordon R. Appel passed away peacefully at his home in Edmonton, on 29 July 2012 at the age of 68 years. Gord was born in 1944 in Kenora, ON, and started his first career with the 9th Intake of the Sapper Apprentices of the Royal Canadian Engineers.

Gordon was very diverse in his careers after his initial commitment to the Canadian Army - working in the running trades at CP Rail, in sales and imports while living in Winnipeg, and as an active member of the Independent Funeral Directors of Alberta. A well-respected Edmonton entrepreneur, Gord built the Limelight Restaurant and, up to his death, owned and operated Appel Funeral Homes/ Central Memorial Chapel.

A Visitation will be held Thursday, 2 August 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Appel Funeral Homes/Central Memorial Chapel, 10530 - 116 Street, Edmonton A Celebration of the Life of Gordon Appel will be held on Friday, 3 August 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Evangel Pentecostal Assembly, 4461 - 50 Street, Edmonton with Interment to follow at Edmonton Cemetery.
